Bhopal gas victims stage demo in Delhi

New Delhi, June 24: Bhopal gas victims today staged a demonstration here at Jantar Mantar and said the compensation package offered by the GoM was flawed.

“An entire population affected by the gas has been left out of the compensation package. People living in some municipal areas of Bhopal which were severely affected have not been included as beneficiaries in the package,” Sadhna Karnik Pradhan, Coordinator of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Sangharsh Sahyog Samiti said.

Three suspected LeT militants arrested

Srinagar, June 24: Three suspected militants, who were part of a module of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) oufit, were arrested by Jammu and Kashmir Police today. Acting on a tip off from central security agencies, police arrested Abdul Haq, Sajjad Ahmed and Liyaqat Ali from Anantnag district of South Kashmir and recovered six pistols from their possession.

“It was a budding LeT module which was specifically asked to target cops and security personnel. There is possibility of more arrests,” a senior police official said.

Further investigation in the case was on, he added.

Govt issues terror alert ahead of SAARC meeting

New Delhi, June 24: The nation has been put on high alert following intelligence inputs that Pakistan-based terrorists, who are against any thaw in Indo-Pak relations, may strike in a desperate bid to derail the SAARC meeting in Islamabad.

Sources said the advisory issued by Ministry of Home Affairs asked all states to increased vigil and take precautionary measures to ensure security as Pakistan-based outfits, who are opposed to any dialogue between India and Pakistan, may strike at public places.

Iran renews call for nuke-free world

Tehran, June 24: Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki blames nuclear-armed states for the failure of efforts aimed at global disarmament, calling for a world free from weapons.

“Nuclear-armed countries are responsible for failure of efforts aimed at dismantling nuclear weapons,” IRNA quoted Mottaki as saying at the International Conference on Nuclear Disarmament in Central Asia and the Caspian Sea Littoral States in Turkmenistan’s capital Ashgabat on Thursday.

PRP not to contest AP bypolls

Hyderabad, June 24: As expected the Praja Rajyam Party has decided not to contest the bypolls for 10 Assembly seats in the Telangana region.

“We have decided not to contest the byelections. PRP workers and Chiranjeevi fans can vote in the polls according to their will,” PRP Political Affairs Committee member Kotagiri Vidyadhara Rao said here today.

Talking to newsmen at the party office, Vidyadhara Rao said the by-elections were not a referendum on Telangana issue.

“The Telangana Rashtra Samiti is provoking the people by stirring up the regional sentiment,” he alleged.

Violence kills 12 people in Iraq

Baghdad, June 24Violence has killed 12 people across Iraq, including four police and a soldier in the country’s main southern city of Mosul, police said.

A bomb explosion killed four policemen in Mosul on Thursday, leaving two others critically wounded.

At a military base in east of the city two insurgents, under the disguise of military clothes, blew themselves up, killing one soldier and injuring five others on Thursday.

On Wednesday night, in another onslaught at a police checkpoint in western Mosul, gunmen killed three officers.

Hooded gunmen kill 4 commuters in Philippines

Manila, June 24: About 30 hooded attackers, believed to be Abu Sayyaf militants, shot and hacked horrified victims running for their lives in the southern Philippines, police said on Thursday. Four died and six were wounded in the brazen attack.

The al-Qaida-linked militants apparently were trying to divert government troops from a weekslong offensive in a nearby town, said Antonio Mendoza, police chief for the island province of Basilan.

Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz detained in Kashmir

Srinagar, June 24: As India and Pakistan opened talks Thursday, Jammu and Kashmir separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani was detained under a tough law and moderate Mirwaiz Umer Farooq was put under house arrest.

Geelani was booked under the Public Safety Act for making provocative speeches inciting youths to violence, Srinagar District Magistrate Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo said.

We have booked him under the Public Safety Act. I have signed his detention order,” Kakroo said.

Mamata lodges FIR against co for using her image in ad

New Delhi, June 24: An FIR has been lodged on behalf of Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee against a shoe manufacturer for allegedly putting out an advertisement featuring her picture without her permission.

The full page advertisement that claims that Mamata was wearing rubber slippers manufactured by Ajanta Company, was published in June 21 edition in Sambad Pratidin, a Kolkata based Bengali newspaper.

Muzaffarnagar, June 24: A leading Islamic seminary has declared the marriage of a 23-year-old man with his step-mother as “null and void”, ruling that such a relationship will be treated as “rape” and the culprits will be punishable under the religious law.

Pak Court Jail 5 Americans for Terrorism

Sargodha, June 24: A Pakistan court convicted five American men on terror charges Thursday and sentenced each to 10 years in prison.

The five young Muslims from the Washington, D.C., area, were arrested in Pakistan in December after their families reported them missing. The case is one of several involving alleged “homegrown” American militants linked to Pakistan, but the only one being tried in a Pakistani court.
