Court directs Mumbai cops to summon Sanjay Dutt

Barabanki (UP), June 25: A local court today issued directives to the Mumbai police commissioner to serve summon on Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt after he failed to turn up at the court for hearing in a case relating to alleged derogatory remarks against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Arvind Mishra while directing Mumbai police commissioner to implement summon on Dutt fixed July 29 as the next date of hearing.

Auto driver commits suicide after stabbing 2 women

Adilabad, June 25: A 24-year-old auto driver committed suicide by jumping in front of a train at Chennur, about 100 km from here today.

Anil stabbed one Fatima for refusing his advances. He also attacked Devi, Fatima’s friend who tried to save her.

Neighbours who came hearing the shrieks of the girls, took them to the Mancherial government hospital. While Fatima was reportedly stable, the condition of her friend Devi was critical, police said.

Anil was seen by the locality people driving to Chennur railway station and jumping before a train, police said.

Fire in Lucknow building

Lucknow, June 25: A fire enveloped a commercial building near the Raj Bhawan here Friday, but there were no casualties and everyone in the complex was evacuated to safety, an official said.

The fire broke out in the office of stockbroking firm Karvy and spread to other commercial outlets in the building in Hazratganj area.

“We controlled the fire and prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings,” Chief Fire Officer Rajendra Tiwari said.

Reply to plea on contempt proceedings, Andhra told

New Delhi, June 25: The Supreme Court Friday asked Andhra Pradesh to file a reply on a petition seeking to initiate contempt proceedings against the state government for breaching the court’s interim order in the appointment of secondary grade teachers.

The vacation bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice R.M. Lodha and Justice A.K. Patnaik gave the state government four weeks to file the reply.

Twitter agrees to better data security; Obama hacked

Washington, June 25: Twitter Inc, the San-Francisco-based microblogging service, pledged to provide better security against hackers under pressure from the Federal Trade Commission.

The commission said Thursday in a statement that Twitter had pledged it would not mislead consumers about privacy protection for 20 years after lax security allowed hackers to infiltrate the service. The company won’t have to pay a fine.

Six gangsters and SAP member killed in encounter

Buxar (Bihar), June 25: A Special Auxiliary Police (SAP) jawan and six members of dreaded Suresh Rajbhar gang were killed in an encounter between the police and the gang at Laxmanpur village in Buxar district, police said.

The encounter took place when the District Armed Police (DAP) personnel assisted by SAP members raided Laxmanpur village following a tip off about the gang members, they said.

During the encounter, a SAP jawan was killed and six gang members were gunned down. The police later cordoned off the area.

Five firearms have also been recovered from the spot, they said.

PM hails Indian cricket team

New Delhi, June 25: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday congratulated the Indian cricket team for winning the Asia Cup.

“The players displayed team spirit and fighting qualities in bringing the laurels to the country,” the prime minister said in a message.

India crushed Sri Lanka by 81 runs to win the Asia Cup cricket tournament in Sri Lanka Thursday.

Sushil Modi joins Nitish’s ‘Vishwash Yatra’

Patna, June 25: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi joined Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s ‘Vishwash Yatra’ Friday, indicating an end to the rift between their parties.

Nitish Kumar and Modi left for Aurangabad district as part of the programme ahead of assembly elections in October. The two are also slated to visit Gaya district later Friday, party leaders said.

Karachi, June 25: Pakistan pacer Umar Gul says India’s Asia Cup title triumph is hardly a surprise as the conditions in Sri Lanka were just perfect for them to end a 15-year-old trophy drought at the event.

No issues with meeting PCB chairman directly: Naved

Karachi, June 25: Pakistan’s banned all-rounder, Rana Naved has no problems with directly approaching the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt and demanding him to review the 12-month ban and Rs two million fine imposed on him since March this year.

Naved was recently told by the appeals’ commissioner (retd) Justice Irfan Qadir, appointed by the board to hear the appeals of players who were banned or fined in March for indiscipline on the tour of Australia, to approach the PCB directly and request the chairman to review the punishment imposed on him.

US slaps unilateral sanctions on Iran

Washington, June 25: The US Congress has voted in favor of new unilateral sanctions on Iran’s energy and banking sectors over the country’s civilian nuclear program.

Described by US Capitol Hill members as “the toughest unilateral sanctions ever,” the new economic and energy access restrictions target Iran’s fuel imports and international financial transactions, AFP reported on Thursday.

The legislation has been forwarded to the White House for US President Barack Obama to sign it into law.

Education loan subsidy scheme finalised

New Delhi, June 25: To make education loans cheaper, a scheme was finalised today to provide full interest subsidy on the loans taken by students with annual family income below Rs.4.5 lakh to pursue technical and professional courses.

The format for the scheme was finalised after a meeting between the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA).

“The scheme provides interest subvention to students for the period of their course. The interest for this period will be paid to the banks by the government,” a ministry official said.

Jordan, Syria blast plan to demolish Jerusalem homes

Amman, June 25: Jordan’s King Abdullah II concluded a brief visit to Syria Thursday, during which he joined Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in condemning an Israeli local planning committee’s approval of a plan to demolish a number of Palestinian houses in East Jerusalem.

The two Arab leaders denounced “the unilateral Israeli measures that seek to Judaize the holy city and empty it of its Arab inhabitants, both Muslims and Christians,” a joint communique carried by the official Petra news agency said.
