Petrol, diesel prices up by Rs 3.73; Kerosene by Rs 3

New Delhi, June 25: Petrol and diesel will cost up to Rs 3.73 per litre more, households will have to pay an additional Rs 35 per cylinder and poor man’s cooking medium kerosene will be dearer by Rs 3 a litre from today, the government said here.

In a major decision to bring petroleum products in line with market rates, the government today freed petrol from all pricing controls and hiked diesel prices by Rs two a litre, Oil Secretary S Sundareshan announced after the meeting of the Empowered Group of Ministers.

School teacher arrested for student’s rape

Navi Mumbai, June 25: A teacher was arrested here Friday for allegedly raping a Class 3 student in a school toilet, police said Monday.

“We have arrested 32-year-old Firoze Ibrahim on suspicion of rape. We are yet to ascertain whether he committed the crime or not. He is in police custody till June 29 and our investigations are on,” said Inspector Sanjay Shukla.

The seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped Monday at St. Joseph School and Junior College in Kalamboli suburb of Navi Mumbai. The victim was allegedly raped in a bathroom on the fourth floor of the school by the accused.

Indian team for SL Tests to be picked tomorrow

Smith emphasises need for Test championship

Johanesburg, June 25: Graeme Smith, the South African captain, has urged the ICC to introduce a Test Championship when its members meet for its annual general meeting in Singapore next week.

“I believe a Test championship is a matter of urgency to stimulate the five-day game,” Smith told Reuters by email from Bridgetown. “All our senior players support a formal Test championship,” he said. South Africa are currently ranked No 2, behind India, in the ICC’s Test rankings.

Surgeon suspended for leaving towel in a woman’s stomach

Kanpur, June 25: A senior surgeon has been suspended for allegedly leaving a towel in a woman’s abdomen during a gall bladder operation.

The incident came to light when Nirmala Devi, a resident of Shastri Nagar here, complained of stomach ache two months after undergoing operation at Ursala hospital.

“The woman complained of stomach ache, infection and pus in the area of incision after she was discharged by the Senior Surgeon A K Shukla,” the Chief Medical Officer Ashok Mishra said.

Unknown diseases kill 20 kids in Tripura

Agartala, June 25: At least 20 children have died in the past 10 days following the outbreak of various unknown viral and tropical diseases in a remote tribal-dominated village in Tripura, officials here said Friday.

“The children mostly died at their homes in remote Kangrai tribal village along the Tripura-Mizoram border in northern Tripura,” doctors and officials who visited the affected areas told reporters at divisional headquarters Kanchanpur.

Many other children and elders also fell ill. Some were admitted to the sub-divisional hospital.
