Nityananda appears before police

Bangalore, Jun 26: Self-styled godman Nityananda, facing rape and other criminal charges, today appeared before police for the first time since his release on bail as per the conditions laid down by the Karnataka High Court.

Nityananda, released on bail on June 12 after 53 days in prison, was directed by the High Court to furnish a bond of Rupees one lakh and two sureties with a direction to appear before the jurisdictional police once every 15 days.

He reported at the police station as per the court directive, his counsel Vivekananda Gupta said.

Katrina becomes picky about her directors

Mumbai, June 26: Bollywood’s Barbie doll, Katrina Kaif is in total awe of the Om Shanti Om director, Farah Khan, with whom she is currently working with in the film Tees Maar Khan.

Woman gangraped by husband’s cousins

Batala (Punjab), June 26: A 24-year-old woman from Ludhiana was allegedly gangraped by four cousins of her husband after intoxicating the couple.

The woman stated in her complaint that on June 20 she and her husband had gone to Amritsar to attend a wedding of his relative.

After the function, two of her husband’s cousins offered them lift to Amritsar bus stand. The duo then stop at a dhaba and allegedly provided them soft drinks laced with drugs.

Aish-Salman continues to rock

Mumbai, June 26: On the eve of the release of Mani Ratnam’s film Raavan, there was a recent poll on who looks the best with Aishwarya Rai on screen. Interestingly it was her ex flame Salman Khan who got a thumping approval.

Salman bagged more then 50% percent of the votes, while Hrithik Roshan came second and Abhi third.

Though Aish worked with Salman in just one film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, yet audience seemed to have loved their pair.

BJP to take up cause of Pak Hindus fleeing to Punjab

Chandigarh, June 26: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Punjab unit Friday announced that it would take up the cause of Hindu families from Pakistan who have been forced to settle in the state after being driven out of their country.

The state unit has set up a three-member committee under Rajya Sabha member Avinash Rai Khanna to look into all aspects of the issue, including relief to such families who have taken shelter in Punjab.

Most of these families are living in Amritsar and nearby areas and fear for their lives if they are forced to return to Pakistan.

New adult education scheme to make Goa fully literate

Panaji, June 26: The Goa government Friday decided to launch an adult education programme intended to take the state, ranked as India’s fourth most literate, to the top of the list.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said that the state education department had been authorised to embark on a new adult education mission which will push the 82-84 percent literacy rate to 100 percent.

Court appoints observer for IMA elections

New Delhi, June 26: The Delhi High Court Friday appointed an observer to conduct the Indian Medical Association (IMA) elections.

The court also asked the IMA to restore the name of its former president K.K. Agarwal, which was removed from the list of central council members making him ineligible from contesting this year’s elections.

Hearing Agarwal’s petition against deletion of his name, Justice M.C.Garg appointed Justice S.K. Aggarwal, a retired high court judge, as observer to conduct the election as per the rules of the IMA. The election process would start from July 1.

Mayawati calls for capturing power in Delhi

Lucknow, June 26: Delhi appears to be the next target of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati, who Friday called for capturing power in the national capital.

Addressing a meeting of her party activists from Delhi and Uttarakhand at her official residence here, Mayawati said that millions of people from Uttar Pradesh have moved to Delhi in search of employment, but alleged they continue to receive step-motherly treatment at the hands of successive governments.

Rakhi’s pistol thieves sent back to UP

Mumbai, June 26: The Mumbai police have sent back the criminals who stole Rakhi Gulzar’s pistol from her residence, to Uttar Pradesh (UP) yesterday, as they were unable to file any charges against them.

The UP police arrested the two while trying to sell the Italy-made 8mm pistol, worth Rs 4 lakh in Pratapgarh.
After keeping them in custody for 12 days, they were got to Mumbai on June 10.

The accused, Chandrakant Mishra (24), has three charges against him and Keshavkumar Pandey (28) has been booked in UP. Mastermind of the burglary, Baby Kumar Shrawan, is absconding.

Woman flashes kid for peace

Toronto, June 26: A Canadian woman is set to escape charges after flashing her breasts at a five-year-old boy to settle a noise dispute.

Marika De Florio said the boy was driving her mad by driving a loud all-terrain vehicle past her house.

She decided to go topless in the street so the boy’s grandparents would be forced to call him inside.

The raunchy tactic did the trick but horrified the boy’s grandparents, Mike and Nancy Berry. Mike called the police in Seeley’s Bay, Ontario, to report her.

Govt clears addition of channels in DD Direct

New Delhi, June 26: The government has cleared the incorporation of up to 100 channels in DD Direct Plus by March 31 next year and 200 channels by December 2011, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni Friday said.

DD Direct Plus, a direct-to-home service that provides television and audio programming, was free to air and the government intended to keep it that way, she told media persons at an interaction.

G8 pledges $7.3 bn for poor countries

Toronoto, June 26: World leaders and donor groups have pledged $7.3 billion in aid by 2015 to reduce child mortality and save women in poor countries from dying in childbirth, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Friday.

The leaders of the Group of Eight (G8) industrial economies have pledged $5 billion, while non-members such as New Zealand, Norway and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have pledged a further $2.3 billion, Harper said.

South Africa warns of flu during world cup

Johannesburg, June 26: South Africa, host to thousands of foreign visitors for the soccer world cup, warned Friday of spread of flu during next couple of weeks.

The country’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases said the number of influenza cases are expected to increase in the next two to three weeks during winter, Xinhua reported.

The FIFA World Cup continues until July 11.

The current number of flu cases are “low to moderate”, an official at the institute said in a statement.

10 militants killed in Afghan clash

Kabul, June 26: Ten Taliban fighters, including two Pakistanis, and a police commander were killed in a gun battle in southwest Afghanistan, an official said.

The clash erupted in Nimroz province when about 60 Taliban, including their Pakistani fellows, attacked a police checkpoint in the Chakhansoor district early Friday, provincial police chief, Abdul Jabbar Pordili, was quoted as saying by Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the clash that lasted three hours left 10 attackers dead and three wounded. One policeman and a civilian were also injured in the clash, he added.

Pak to induct three F-16 fighter planes

Islamabad, June 26: Three more F-16 fighter jets will be inducted in the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Saturday, officials said.

Defence officials Friday said that in the first phase the US would hand over three F-16 Block 52 C fighter jets to Pakistan that would be equipped with latest weapons and technology. Pakistani pilots would fly the three F-16 fighter jets from America.

The US will formally hand over these jets at a ceremony to be held Sunday, Online news agency reported.

Largest gold coin sold at $4 mn in Austria

Vienna, June 26: The world’s largest gold coin, weighing 100 kg with a diameter of 52 cm, was sold for 3.27 million euros (about $3.99 million) at an auction here.

Spanish dealer Oro Direct offered the price and became the owner, Xinhua reported.

Six bidders were registered for the auction. Oro Direct offered the bid in a written form, while the other five applicants participated through telephone.

The coin was originally owned by Auer von Welsbah (AvW), an Austrian investment management company, which went bankrupt in May 2010.

We endorse India-Pakistan dialogue: US

Washington, June 26: The United States has expressed its appreciation for the increasing dialogue between Pakistan and India, saying it’s in their self-interest and larger US interest to reduce tensions through talks.

“Just as we’ve said many, many times, we appreciate and certainly endorse increasing dialogue between Pakistan and India,” State Department spokesman Phillip J Crowley told reporters Friday when asked about the talks in Islamabad.

Gandhi is hero for protesters at G-20 summit

Toronto, June 26: As Toronto virtually went under lockdown before the G-20 summit beginning Saturday, anti-globalisation protesters marched through city streets to give the security forces a tough time. In one such anti-poverty protest, Mahatma Gandhi figured prominently.

Fabio Cannavaro, captain of the disgraced team, said the former world champions need to improve their talent pool or risk continuing to struggle in international as well as in domestic tournaments.

“I think there are not many changes we can make. At the moment, Italy is not producing players like in my generation when we had great players,” he said Friday.

15 killed in Bihar accident

Patna, June 26: Fifteen people were killed early Saturday when a bus in which they were travelling collided with a truck in Bihar, police said.

Over 10 people were injured after the accident took place near Chenati village in Bihar’s Patna district, a police officer said.

“All the injured have been admitted to a hospital for treatment,” the police officer said.

India pleased yet guarded on nuke group’s stand

New Delhi, June 26: Indian officials noted with satisfaction the statement issued by the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group (NSG) on the prospect of civil nuclear cooperation with it but were wary about the stance taken by the 46-member body on the proposed China-Pakistan nuclear deal,
Indian officials, who were closely watching the developments of the June 21-25 meeting of NSG, said these were largely to New Delhi’s satisfaction.

Two workers killed in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, June 26: Two workers were killed and six critically injured when a boiler at a soft drink manufacturing plant exploded in Orissa’s Khordha district, police said Saturday.

The accident took place Friday at the plant of Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages at Khordha town, about 50 km from here.

The two workers succumbed to their injuries in the night at Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College Hospital (SCB) at Cuttack city, inspector in-charge of the Khordha police station B.K.Jena told IANS.

Jena said the exact cause of the accident was being investigated.

FIR against 12 UP cops in fake encounter case
