Security Council slams Gaza aid raid

London, June 01: The UN Security Council has condemned Israel’s deadly attack on a Gaza-bound aid convoy, demanding the immediate release of the ships and the civilians onboard.

The Security Council condemned “those acts which resulted in the loss of at least 10 civilians and many wounded,” AFP quoted a statement by the Council’s President.

The UN body further called for the immediate release of all ships and civilians held by Israel, urging an impartial investigation into the Israeli attack against the aid flotilla.

Al-Qaeda No. 3 killed in Pakistan

Kabul, June 01: Al-Qaeda has announced that its top leader in Afghanistan Mustafa Abu al-Yazid has been killed in a US airstrike in Pakistan within the past two weeks.

“His death will only be a severe curse by his life upon the infidels,” al-Qaeda said late Monday in a statement quoted by the New York Times.

The Egyptian Yazid, the financial director for al-Qaeda as well as one of the group’s founders, was considered by American intelligence to be one of the al-Qaeda triumvirate with Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Reforms package: Pak court rejects objections against bench

Islamabad, June 01: Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Monday rejected the government’s objections against a bench set up to hear petitions challenging a landmark constitutional reforms package that stripped President Asif Ali Zardari of his powers.

A 17-member larger bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry initially reserved its verdict after hearing objections against the bench constituted to hear a batch of 15 petitions against the 18th constitutional amendment.

However, later in the day, it rejected the objections.

Turkey recalls top envoy

Turkey, June 01: Ankara warns of potentially irreparable harm to ties. Turkey recalled its ambassador to Israel on Monday and warned that the IDF’s pre-dawn raid on the Gaza flotilla might have caused “irreversible consequences” in the relationship between the two countries.

“It should be known that we are not going to remain silent in the face of this inhumane state terrorism,” said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan amid initial reports that Turkish nationals may have been among the dead and wounded.

Turkey, June 01: Turkey withdrew its ambassador to Israel and called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council as condemnations erupted across Europe and the Arab world Monday over Israel’s deadly commando raid on ships taking humanitarian aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip.

Iran has at least 5.7 kg of higher-enriched uranium: IAEA

Vienna, June 01: Iran had produced at least 5.7 kilogrammes of higher-enriched uranium, which it says it is producing for a research reactor, as of early April, according to a restricted UN report seen by a news agency on Monday.

“On April 7, 2010, Iran withdrew 5.7 kilogrammes of UF6 (uranium hexafluoride) from the first cascade” at its pilot fuel enrichment plant in Natanz, the International Atomic Energy Agency report said.

“According to Iran, this UF6 was enriched to 19.7 per cent.”

Iran has fuel for 2 nuke weapons: IAEA report

Washington, June 01: A United Nations Security Council (UNSC) report revealed on Monday that Iran has now produced a stockpile of nuclear fuel that experts say would be enough, with further enrichment, to make two nuclear weapons.

The inspectors reported on Monday that Iran has now produced over 5,300 pounds of low-enriched uranium, all of which would have to undergo further enrichment before it could be converted to bomb fuel.

China forcing Internet cafe shutdown for national exam

Beijing, June 01: Many provinces in China are forcing Internet cafes to shut down in order to allow students to prepare for their upcoming National College Entrance Examination.

The local governments of Linxian county in Shanxi province and Linchuan district in Jiangxi province have asked Internet cafes to “temporarily cease trading” till June 09 and warned that fines would be levied if they refuse to comply, China Daily reported citing a statement in people.com.cn.

This is the first time the regions are seeking to enforce the ban.

Syria conducted nuke experiments: IAEA document

Vienna, June 01: Syria has told the UN atomic watchdog about past nuclear experiments, but is still refusing to cooperate over allegations that it was building a secret nuclear reactor with North Korea’s help, a new report revealed on Monday.

In a restricted four-page report, the International Atomic Energy Agency said that Syria “provided the Agency with information concerning previously unreported uranium conversion and irradiation activities” at a small research reactor in Damascus.
