OIC lashes out at Israeli violence

Gaza, June 01: The Organization of the Islamic Conference voices its condemnation of Israel’s bloody takeover of a humanitarian aid convoy heading for the besieged Gaza Strip.

The Islamic body on Monday condemned the use of violence by Israeli forces against hundreds of international activists onboard the six-ship flotilla heading to the Palestinian coastal sliver.

It further called for the immediate release of detained campaigners and the captured ships.

Ahmadinejad urges action against Israel

Tehran, June 01: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has once again condemned an Israeli attack on a Gaza-bound aid convoy as “brutal,” urging decisive action against Israel.

In a speech in the western province of Ilam on Tuesday, President Ahmadinejad said that the “brutal” attack on the convoy was “in contravention of human values, [international] law and justice.”

Ahmadinejad further pointed out that Western countries’ support of Tel Aviv was the root cause of Israeli aggression against Palestinians.

Japan PM says he will stay as leader

Tokyo, June 01: Japan’s Prime Minister vows to continue to lead his country despite growing calls from his own party to resign following his decision over a US military base.

Calls have emerged in Yukio Hatoyama’s Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) for the premier to step down to restore the party’s chances in the upper house election expected in July, Reuters reports.

But Hatoyama, who had talks on Monday with the Secretary-General of his party, Ichiro Ozawa, said after the meeting that he would stay.

Two NDFB militants killed in encounter in Assam

Kokrajhar, June 01: Two NDFB militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Assam’s Kokrajhar district this morning, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the police and Army had launched an operation in Alangi area of the district last night.

The militants were spotted this morning following which an encounter lasted for nearly an hour, killing militants, they said.

Two pistols, four live rounds of ammunitions, two empty cartridges, two bicycles and a bag with documents were recovered from the possession of the slain militants, sources said.

‘India advised Nepal king to destroy Maoists’

Kathmandu, June 01: Nine years after the massacre of Nepal’s royal family, an aide of the slain king said the Maoists were not averse to an ornamental king while neighbour India had advocated weeding out the Communist guerrillas by force, according to a report.

Chiran Shumsher Thapa, who had served as King Birendra’s press secretary in the Narayanhity royal palace, spoke to the “Nepal” weekly on the ninth anniversary of the palace massacre June 01, 2001 in which 13 members of the royal family were shot and 10, including the king and his queen, killed.

Sensex plunges over 626 as RIL gives rude jolt

Mumbai, June 01: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex tumbled over 626 points at mid-session Tuesday after the most-weighted stock on the index, Reliance Industries, touched a 52-week low for a brief while.

The 30-share index dropped by 626.24 points to 16,318.39 at 1300 hrs, as stocks of Reliance Industries, which has over 13 percent weightage, crashed by Rs 204.45 to Rs 840.55.

Likewise, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty cracked the 5,000-points level to trade at 4,986.45, taking a hefty loss of 99.85.

Second autopsy ordered in death of Goa woman

Panaji, June 01: The district administration today ordered a second autopsy on the body of 28-year-old Nadia Torreado, who allegedly committed suicide by consuming rat poison. “The second autopsy has been ordered and it will be conducted in a district hospital in Margao today,” a senior district administration official said.

The first autopsy was conducted at a hospital in Chennai on Sunday before shifting the body to Goa. Nadia was admitted to a private hospital in Thane, Mumbai a fortnight ago after she had allegedly consumed a paste full of rat poison.

Five-year-old girl mauled by bulldog

London, June 01: A five-year-old girl suffered severe facial injuries when she was attacked by an American bulldog, police said today.

The girl’s stepfather grappled with the animal, a family pet, to force it to release her but received injuries to his arm in the process.

The girl and man were taken to hospital by ambulance following the attack at an address in Hanemill Court, Northampton, at about 7.15pm yesterday.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police, who were called to the scene, said: “Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening at this time.

The police seized a dagger from his possession, which he claims to have brought from one Kishen to defend himself from his enemies.

Gujarat HC upholds death sentence to three

Ahmedabad, June 01: The Gujarat High Court today upheld the POTA court verdict awarding death sentence to three convicts for the 2002 Akashardham terror attack, which claimed 32 lives.

The division bench of Justices R. M. Doshit and K. M. Thakar, while pronouncing the judgement, rejected the appeal of six convicts against the POTA court verdict.

Three persons, Adam Ajmeri, Shan Miya alias Chand Khan from Bareilly and Mufti Abdul Qyyum Mansuri were awarded death sentence by POTA court in July 2006.

Body of missing policeman recovered

Lucknow, June 01: Body of a policeman, who was missing since last two days, was ecovered near railway tracks in Basti district, police said here today.

Body of Triloki Nath Singh, who was posted as head constable, was recovered near railway tracks at Govind Nagar railway station yesterday, they said.

The body bore injury marks indicating Singh, who was due to retire next month, was killed.
