Bangalore, Jun 02: A special court here today adjourned the trial in the disproportionate assets case against former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to June 14.

When the case came up for hearing before Judge B M Mallikarjunaiah, the counsel for Jaya sought over 10 days time stating that certified copies of necessary documents were still not ready.

However, Special Public Prosecutor B V Acharya argued that all the requisite documents had already been given and “the reason was just a pretext to seek adjournment.”

Indian cops nabbed with hashish in Nepal

Kathmandu, June 02: Two Indian policemen have been caught with hashish in a border district in Nepal, the official media said.

Indra Bhanu Rai and Umesh Yadav, two policemen employed in the Badauni police station in India’s Uttar Pradesh state, were arrested in Nepal’s border district Kapilavastu after they were found to be carrying 700 gm of hashish, the Gorkhapatra reported Wednesday.

Hashish is the purified resinous extract of the hemp plant and used as a hallucinogen.

During a police check at the border bus station Monday, the two men tried to flee but were caught.

Fresh I-T notice to Vodafone

New Delhi Jun 02 : The telecom company claims it has no liability in any event.

The Income Tax (I-T) Department today said it had the jurisdiction to tax the $11.1-billion Vodafone-Hutchison Essar deal of February 2007.

“We have jurisdiction over taxing Vodafone. Jurisdiction order has been issued …we will send the tax demand to them within a few days,” Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman S S N Moorthy told PTI.

Srinagar, June 02: A boy was killed in an accidental fire by his 10-year-old cousin in Basohli area of Kathua district, police said here today. The incident occurred at village Palai in Basohli area, about 120-kms from here, in Kathua last evening when Sonu was fiddling with a country made gun of his father.

The gun suddenly went off hitting his 6-year-old cousin Abhi Jamwal, who died on the spot, they said. Jamwal had come to the house of his maternal uncle a few days back.

Britain’s plan to recruit Indian doctors falls through

London, June 02: Britain wants to recruit junior doctors from India after their exodus from the country due to tightened immigration rules caused a shortage but the Home Office is not in agreement.

The National Health Service (NHS) is reported to have interviewed doctors from India and even sought the help of the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) in its recruitment drive.

The BAPIO stipulated that the doctors should be allowed to stay and get training for between three and four years, rather than the two-year limit currently in place.

40 bodies found in Mexico mass grave

Mexico City, June 02: At least 40 bodies, including that of a prison warden, were found in a mass grave in Mexico’s Guerrero state, the state attorney general’s office said.

The body of Daniel Bravo Mota, 53, warden of Iguala prison, was identified after forensic tests, spokesman Albertico Guinto said Tuesday, adding that the mass grave, an abandoned mine shaft, was found near Taxco city.

Mota was kidnapped last month along with prison psychologist Ignacio Suastegui Perez by a group of heavily armed men.

SEZ sizzle returns with economic revival

New Delhi June 02 : With the domestic industry showing signs of steady recovery and merchandise exports stablising, special economic zones (SEZ) are again getting prominence in boardroom discussions and strategy plans of corporate conglomerates. Six new proposals for setting up SEZs would be coming up in the meeting of the Board of Approval (BoA) on June 8.

As many as 12 SEZ projects were surrendered between December 2008 and March 2009. But, no SEZ was surrendered since then.

She celebrated her 93rd birthday with friends and family on May 22. She passed away on May 31.

Five persons sentenced to life imprisonment in murder case

Munger(Bihar), Jun 02: A fast track court today sentenced six persons to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each of them in an eight-year-old murder case. Additional District and Sessions Judge Gyanchandra Gupta held five persons, Ramji Mandal, Subodh Mandal, Visho Mandal, Hilan Mandal and Shetal Mandal guilty of killing Yodhi Mandal on August 15, 2002, when he was on his way to watch the Independence Day function.

India gold futures hits new record

Mumbai Jun 02 : India gold continued its record-breaking spree on Wednesday morning taking support from a weaker rupee, though prices were steady overseas, analysts said.

The most-active August contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) hit another record high at 18,850 rupees per 10 grams, before easing a tad to 18,828 rupees at 10:42 a.m., still up 0.60 percent.

The Indian rupee gave up early gains and turned weak on Wednesday weighed by losses in the euro against the dollar. A weak rupee makes the dollar-quoted asset expensive.
