Man hacks wife”s paramour to death

Barabanki (UP), June 03: A man allegedly hacked to death his wife”s paramour and later surrendered before the police in Jahagirabad area, officials said here today.

Om Prakash hacked Shivram Bhaskar in two pieces with a sharp-edged weapon after he found the latter in a compromising position with his wife in Kamrakha village yesterday, they said.

Later, Prakash surrendered himself before the police and also gave them the murder weapon. Police said that Shivram was having an illicit relationship with Om Prakash”s wife.

Bhopal gas tragedy survivors hang accused

Bhopal, Jun 03: As the trial court gets ready to pronounce its verdict in the Bhopal gas tragedy case next week, the survivors of the 1984 industrial disaster have decided to give “death penalty” to the accused by hanging their effigies at public places here. “We are preparing the effigies of the accused of the world”s worst industrial disaster and hanging them at different squares as it gives us some solace from our sufferings,” said Shamshad Bi, who lost her lone five-year-old -son and mother-in-law in the gas tragedy.

Japan could have new premier as early as Friday

Tokyo, June 03: Japan is to have a new leader Friday, members of the governing party said one day after Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama resigned following a slide in his government’s approval ratings.

Mr. Hatoyama’s Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) set Friday as the date it would make its choice for his successor, who would lead the party into July elections for the upper house of the Diet.

Saudi bride contracts ask for age

Riyadh, June 03: Saudi Arabia has started issuing new marriage contracts that require the age of the bride to be given, in an attempt to stop underage girls from marrying.

The kingdom had promised new measures after a series of high-profile cases involving young brides.

Human rights groups have welcomed the new measures, saying clear-cut rules were needed to ensure underage girls were not harmed.

Saudi Arabia has no law against child marriage.

Israelis shot people in the forehead

Islamabad, June 03: A Pakistani journalist who was captured during a naval attack on the Gaza-bound aid flotilla said today that Israeli soldiers were shooting people in cold blood.

Talat Hussain, one of the 124 people arriving in Jordan following their release by the Israeli authorities, said the commandos “shot people in the forehead”.

“I witnessed myself the first Israeli assault on the ship. There was no weapon on the ship,” Hussain told Aaj news channel by phone from Jordan.

This continues a flattening trend seen since 2002 and caps a downward trend seen between 1995 and 2002, especially in males, said report author Joyce Abma. The report was issued Wednesday by the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics.

High population not a burden, says Hasina

Dhaka, June 03: Bangladesh’s 156 million population is “not a burden” and can be turned into skilled manpower, says Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

She informed the parliament that her government was “not afraid” of the high population growth of the country and underscored the need for “turning the huge population into skilled manpower”, The Daily Star newspaper said Thursday.

“I don’t think that the huge population of the country is a burden for us, I prefer to term it as a strength for us. We just need to train the population,” she said while responding to a supplementary question.

Mani Ratnam`s `Raavan` faces trouble in Karnataka

Bangalore, June 03: Director Mani Ratnam`s Hindi-Tamil bilingual film `Raavan` will be released in only 24 theatres in one of the three distribution areas of Karnataka, the state`s film chamber said late Wednesday.

Vasant Kumar Patil, president of Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), told reporters that `Raavan`, titled `Raavanan` in Tamil, will have a restricted release.

“A decision has been taken to follow the existing policy of allowing non-Kannada films in a stipulated number of theatres,” Patil said.

Mediterranean diet cuts asthma risk

New York, June 03: Children who eat a Mediterranean diet rich in fruit, vegetables and fish have a lower risk of asthma and wheezing, experts have said.

But eating three or more burgers a week can increase the risk, although this may be linked to other unhealthy habits, they said.

Researchers from Germany, Spain and London examined data from 50,000 children aged eight to 12, collected between 1995 and 2005.

The youngsters were from 20 counties around the world, including affluent and poorer nations.

Official: Turkish activist planes have left Israel

Ankara, June 03: Turkey’s foreign minister says three Turkish planes carrying hundreds of activists from a flotilla carrying aid to Gaza earlier this week have left Israel bound for Istanbul.
Ahmet Davutoglu says the take-off was delayed because Turkey “did not want any of its citizens to be left behind.”

Two more air ambulance planes, carrying 17 wounded activists, have already landed at a military base in Ankara.

Angry passengers attack China airport staff

Beijing, June 03: Passengers furious about delays last month at a major Chinese airport vented their frustration by attacking about two dozen employees, state media said Thursday.

Torrential rain in the southern city of Guangzhou in May wreaked havoc on flight schedules, triggering 35 incidents at the Baiyun airport, which left 23 employees with minor injuries, the Guangzhou Daily said.
