Sikh woman killed her babies before dying: Canadian police

Toronto, May 01: A young Sikh woman found dead along with her three small children in Calgary in October killed the babies herself, according to investigations by Canadian police.

Harsimrat Kahlon, 27, and the babies were found dead in their apartment Oct 5 when the woman’s partner called the police.

The Chandigarh-born woman died due to childbirth complications. But before her death, she killed her children.

Their bodies were found inside suitcases hidden in the basement of the couple’s apartment in northeast Calgary.

Two NY men charged with aiding Al Qaeda

New York, May 01: Two New York men have been charged with conspiracy to provide material support to Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network that included providing computer expertise and buying seven watches online for the group, prosecutors said on Friday.

Wesam El-Hanafi, 33, who was born and lived in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, and Sabirhan Hasanoff, 34, a dual U.S. and Australian citizen who also lived in Brooklyn, were accused of performing tasks for al Qaeda in New York, according to a U.S. District Court indictment.

Knoxville, May 01 A college student who hacked into former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s e-mail account and posted some of its contents on the Internet was found guilty on Friday.

After four days of deliberations, a federal jury found David Kernell, the 22-year-old son of a Democratic Tennessee state legislator, guilty of obstruction of justice, a felony, and unauthorized access of a computer, a misdemeanor.

Kernell was cleared of a wire fraud charge, and the jury could not agree on a verdict on a charge of identity theft.

US and Russia agree on START nuclear treaty annexes

Paramedics responded to a report of a shooting at Lopez’s home in Encino at around 11:30 AM (local time), TMZ.com reported, adding that the police is investigating the death as an apparent suicide.

The 60-year-old entertainment lawyer was married to ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’ actress Catherine Bach. They have two children together.

BP begins using underwater dispersant on oil spill

New Orleans, May 01: BP began late Friday applying an underwater dispersant to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in a bid to slow the gushing oil from the well source, said a company spokesman.

“We’ve started the undersea application of dispersant,” BP spokesman Bill Salvin told AFP, adding that the company is “hoping this will substantially reduce the amount of oil reaching the surface.”

The dispersant is “being applied to the leak that’s closest to the blowout preventer,” he said, referring to one of the three leaks at the site of the sunken oil rig.

US man jailed in North Korea phones home

Boston, May 01: An American jailed in North Korea was allowed Friday to call home for the first time since being sentenced to eight years’ hard labor, as the United States urged his release.

Thaleia Schlesinger, a spokeswoman for Aijalon Mahli Gomes’ family in his hometown of Boston, told AFP that Gomes spoke with his mother.

“Yes, she did receive a phone call from her son in North Korea. She was really quite surprised and relieved,” Schlesinger said.

US gov signs bill revising new immigration law

Phoenix, May 01: Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday signed a follow-on bill approved by Arizona legislators that make revisions to the state’s sweeping law against illegal immigration — changes she says should quell concerns that the measure will lead to racial profiling.

The law requires local and state law enforcement to question people about their immigration status if there’s reason to suspect they’re in the country illegally, and makes it a state crime to be in the United States illegally.

Dubai, May 01: Metro connections in Dubai turned friendlier on Friday when seven more stations opened on the Red Line to the relief and delight of the commuting public.

U.S. to push for India and Pak to join NPT

Washington, May 01: US will push for all states that are not members of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) including India and Pakistan to join the nuclear accord during the NPT Review Conference to be held next week at the U.N. headquarters.

“The U.S. has had a long—standing policy of supporting the universal adherence to NPT,” Susan Burk Special Representative of the President for nuclear non—proliferation told PTI, in response to a question whether Washington will address the question of New Delhi and Islamabad’s absence from the NPT.

‘Wonder woman’ jailed for student con

London, May 01: A college principal once celebrated as education’s “wonder woman” was jailed yesterday for conning overseas students into enrolling for bogus courses.

Roselle Antoine who was made an MBE in the 2006 New Year’s Honours List for her services to education, was given an eight-month custodial sentence after luring Jamaican students into signing up for worthless qualifications in the UK. She was also found guilty of providing immigration services to students when not qualified to do so.

Crowds flock to first day of World Expo 2010

Shanghai, May 01: Crowds poured into the World Expo 2010 site in Shanghai Saturday as the six-month event opened to the public following a spectacular opening ceremony Friday night.

Tens of thousands of people were queuing before the gates opened, many arriving more than one hour early.

The organisers aim to attract an average of around 400,000 visitors daily, or 70 million by the time the Expo closes Oct 31.

More than 20 heads of state and government attended Friday’s spectacular opening of the Expo, which featured fireworks and music and dance performances.

Use of ACs to be banned in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, May 01: In view of the power crisis in Uttar Pradesh, use of air conditioners in houses, businesses and government offices has been banned in the state between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., an official said Saturday.

The order is likely to come into effect Sunday and will remain in force till July 15.

The order can be revoked if the power situation improves due to favourable weather conditions, an official with the Uttar Pradesh Power Corp Ltd (UPPCL) told IANS.

Those not complying with the order would face action.

IPL expected to dominate BCCI Working Committee meet

Mumbai, May 01: The focus would be firmly on the alleged financial irregularities committed by suspended IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi when the Indian Cricket Board’s all-powerful Working Committee meets here tomorrow.

BCCI President Shashank Manohar would brief thecommittee members about the various issues surrounding IPL, which is under the Income Tax and Enforcement Directorate’s scanner for alleged violations of various laws, but there would not be any discussion of these at the sitting, BCCI sources insisted.
