Class Xth girl raped in Moga

Moga, May 01: A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour at village Bhinder Kalan in the district, police said today.

Charanjit Singh raped the girl, a student of Class Xth, at her house yesterday when her mother was away, they said.

Medical examination of the victim had confirmed that she was sexually assaulted, police said, adding efforts are on to nab the accused.

AERB team starts investigation into lapses by DU

New Delhi, May 01: A team from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) today launched investigation into the lapses by Delhi University in auctioning of radioactive material leading to the death of a labourer here recently.

The four-member team is also looking for certain radioactive pencils which are reportedly missing. The team went to the Physics Department which makes use of the radioactive material in its labs, sources said.

Kasab showed no remorse: Ujjwal Nikam

Mumbai, May 01: With just a couple of days left for the 26/11 court to pronounce its judgement in the Mumbai terror attack case, prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam today said the case was a big challenge, but is confident that he will secure conviction of its perpetrator Ajmal Kasab and two Indian conspirators.

Nikam, who has an enviable track record of securing death penalty for 37 accused and life term to 627 in his career spanning over three decades, is confident that Kasab, the lone 26/11 gunman captured, will be punished despite his repeated attempts to “misguide” the court.

Labourer killed, four injured in building wall collapse

Hisar, May 01: A labourer was killed and four others were injured when a wall of an under-construction commercial building collapsed near Dabra Chowk here, police said today. Five labourers were engaged at the site when the wall collapsed suddenly trapping them under the debris last evening, they said.

The labourers were rushed to a private hospital where Rajender, resident of village Kundanpura, succumbed to the injuries, Hisar”s Superintendent of Police, Subhash Yadav said.

Youth dies after swallowing fish

Bhubaneswar, May 01: A 23-year-old man died in Orissa after accidentally swallowing a fish, police said Saturday.

Udhaba Munda, a resident of Tangarani village in Keonjhar district, some 250 km from here, went to the pond Friday to catch fish.

‘He caught a fish and held it in his mouth, and went to catch another fish. However, the fish in an attempt to escape slipped into Munda’s throat and got trapped inside,’ a police officer told.

Saudi surgeons separate conjoined babies

Riyadh, May 01: An oxygen mask on his face, tiny 10-week-old Mohammed Taim lay still on a blanket but his conjoined twin brother Amjed was kicking and squirming and not making work easy for the anaesthesiologists.

The doctors were readying the babies, fused at their bellies, for a marathon operation that they — and the boys’ nervous Jordanian parents — hoped would enable the twins to live separate lives with separate bodies, each with their own full set of functioning organs.

Blast in Pakistan

Islamabad, May 01: A suicide bomber blew himself up in a crowded market in northwest Pakistan’s restive Swat valley today, killing at least two persons and injuring 12 others.

The bomber struck in the market located near Sohrab Khan Chowk in Mingora, the main city in Swat district, authorities said.

The identity of the two dead persons could not immediately be ascertained.

The condition of three of the 12 injured was described by officials as critical.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Malakand division) Qazi Jameel said the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber.

Baghdad, May 01: Leery of using a mobile phone, the militant tasked with directing some of Baghdad’s deadliest recent bombings would get his orders from al-Qaida in Iraq’s leadership by meeting a go-between near a grocery store named Mr. Milk.

So after Iraqi security forces nabbed the militant, Munaf Abdul-Rahim al-Rawi, it was to Mr. Milk’s store that he led investigators. That was the first step culminating in what Iraqi and American officials called a devastating blow to the terror group: the killing of al-Qaida in Iraq’s secretive two top leaders in a raid last week.

Iraq death toll in April almost same as last year

Baghdad, May 01: The number of Iraqis killed in violence in April fell slightly month on month but was almost unchanged from 12 months ago, the government said on Friday.

Figures compiled by the health, interior and defence ministries showed that 328 people — 274 civilians, 39 police and 15 soldiers — died as a result of attacks in April, only slightly fewer than the 355 killed 12 months ago.

April’s death toll, however, was down slightly on March, when 367 people were killed in unrest.

Hezbollah slams UN ‘interference’ in Lebanon

Beirut, May 01 Hezbollah on Friday slammed “interference” in Lebanese affairs by UN envoy Terje Roed-Larsen and warned that its arsenal was off-limits after the diplomat accused militias of creating tension in Lebanon.

“Hezbollah condemns this attempt to create dissent and sedition among the Lebanese under the guise of advice and guidance,” the Shiite militant party said in a statement.

US, Kuwait try to resolve Guantanamo issues

Washington, May 01: The United States and Kuwait are working out differences over returning two Kuwaiti detainees being held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Kuwait’s foreign minister said on Friday.

A lawyer for the detainees said this week the U.S. government was making unfair demands on Kuwait that included putting new restrictions on other former detainees released from the Guantanamo prison to Kuwait last year.

US lawmakers denounce Ahmadinejad visit

Washington, May 01: US lawmakers on Friday denounced Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s plans to join a major UN nuclear disarmament summit next week in New York and urged he not be given a visa to attend.

Quake hits Bering Sea

Moscow, May 01: A 6.3 magnitude earthquake has struck the Bering Sea halfway between Alaska and Russia but there was no tsunami alert for the nearby coastlines, the US Geological Survey said Saturday.

The quake occurred at 2311 GMT Friday 474 km from Gambell, Alaska, and 478 km from Provideniya, Russia at a depth of about 15 km, it said.

No tsunami was expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast, the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said in a statement Saturday.

Russian seismological services also confirmed news about the quake.
