India gets access to Headley: Report

New Delhi, May 01: In what is being seen as a major step forward in the Mumbai attacks probe, reports claimed on Saturday that the United States has finally agreed to allow India direct access to 26/11 accused David Coleman Headley.

It is believed that while allowing India direct access, Washington has attached no pre-conditions for questioning Headley, who is currently under FBI custody.

The Indian government is now likely to set up a special team which will interrogate Headley in the US very soon, said government sources.

Ahmadinejad to meet UN Chief

Tehran, May 01: Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is scheduled to meet UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of a nuclear non-proliferation conference in New York.

As world countries are to attend the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference on Monday, UN Spokesman Martin Nesirky announced Friday that the two officials will discuss recent developments in a sit-down at the UN headquarters.

“The meeting has been scheduled for Monday, but the hour is yet to be determined,” IRNA news agency quoted Nesirky as saying.

US police beat Chinese diplomat

Washington, May 01: Three Houston police officers have been confined to desk duty after beating a Chinese diplomat in the parking garage of the Chinese Consulate.

Houston’s mayor, Annise Parker, said the guilty officers’ responsibilities would be limited till it is clear as to why they arrested and beat Chinese diplomat Yu Boren last Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Foreign Ministry released a statement saying the police harassed and beat the deputy consul-general when he drove into the consulate.

The Chinese ministry said that one of the diplomat’s family members was also involved.

Lawyer satisfied with defence of Kasab’s innocence

Mumbai, May 01: As he awaits the outcome of the “biggest and most challenging” case in his career, Ajmal Kasab’s lawyer is satisfied with the defence he made of his client’s innocence in the 26/11 trial.

“I am hopeful that Kasab’s defence of his innocence in the case would be considered by the court while delivering the verdict on May 3,” KP Pawar told a news agency.

Goods train derails in Andhra Pradesh

Bhubaneswar, May 01: Train services were disrupted on the busy Howrah-Chennai route on Saturday following derailment of a goods train near Palasa in Andhra Pradesh, about 150 km from here, railway sources said.

The engine and seven wagons of the goods train from Khurda Road to Vishakhapatnam derailed at Pundi near Palasa this morning but no one was injured in the mishap, a senior official of East Coast Railway (ECoR) here said.

The Inter-city Express running between Bhubaneswar and Vishakhapatnam and the Passenger train between Khurda Road and Palasa were cancelled, he said.

New UNICEF boss takes office

United Nation, May 01: Anthony Lake has been appointed as the new executive director of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) as he vows to improve children’s rights around the world.

Lake, who was a former US national security adviser, said on Saturday that he was excited to be joining UNICEF.

Lake was appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to succeed Ann Veneman as head of the organization last month.

“Peace and security are the foundation of a world fit for children. Wars not only kill children, they breed disease and destroy economic hope,” said Lake.

US warns of terror attack, Delhi on alert

New Delhi, May 01: In a fresh advisory, the US on Saturday warned of “imminent” terror attacks in New Delhi, particularly in market places like Connaught Place, Greater Kailash and Chandni Chowk, which are “attractive targets” for terrorist groups.

“This Warden Message provides updated information related to the April 21, 2010 Warden Message and additional information related to the Travel Alert issued for India on April 16, 2010,” said the renewed advisory primarily intended for American citizens in India.

Kolkata civic polls: Congress-TMC talks fail

Kolkata, May 01: The fate of the Congress-Trinamool Congress alliance in West Bengal has become uncertain, with both the parties deciding on Saturday to contest the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections on May 30 separately.

The alliance fell apart as none of the two partners were ready to take a smaller pie of the KMC’s 141 seats. The Congress is unhappy with Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee for offering only 25 seats and today announced a list of its candidates for 88 wards.

Another Indian attacked in Australia

Melbourne, May 01: In yet another attack on Indians in Australia, a 24-year old student from the community was severely beaten up in western Sydney, where police claimed the assault was not racially motivated.

The violent attack on the Indian student took place on the night of April 28, the ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ reported without identifying the victim.

He was repeatedly hit and kicked by unidentified assailants but local police said the attack was not racially motivated, according to the report.

MCI chief Ketan Desai sent to 13 days judicial custody

New Delhi, May 01: A Delhi court today remanded MCI President Ketan Desai and three others in 13-day judicial custody after their arrest for allegedly taking bribe to allow a medical college in Punjab to admit students despite lack of infrastructure.

Additional Sessions Judge O P Saini sent them to jail till May 14 after the CBI told that their custodial interrogation was no more required in the investigation of the case.

‘Spy’ Madhuri Gupta tells court she is being framed

New Delhi, May 01: Madhuri Gupta, a junior Indian diplomat arrested on charges of spying for Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), told a court here on Saturday that she was being framed, police sources said.

Gupta was sent to 14 days judicial custody by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja. The police were told to present Gupta before the court on May 15.

According to a police official, Gupta, 53, said she was not a senior officer and could not have passed on sensitive information to her contacts in Pakistan where she was posted in the Indian High Commission.

ICC to monitor Pak World T20 matches for betting

Lahore, May 01: The ICC plans to keep an eye on all matches involving Pakistan during the World Twenty20 championships in order to prevent betting and match fixing.

”We have received a schedule of Pakistan cricket team matches and our vigilance team will be closely observing the developments within Pakistan relating to alleged betting which is a financial crime,” a senior official of the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit told the ‘Dawn’.

Villagers block trains in J”khand demanding ST status

Giridih, May 01: Rail services on Howrah- Delhi route were disrupted today following a blockade by villagers demanding Schedule Tribe status at a railway crossing in Giridih district, officials said. Villagers belonging to Ghatwar caste blocked Isri Bazar crossing under Dhanbad division of East Central Railway demanding that they be included in the Schedule Tribe category, they said.

PKK militants kill 4 Turkish soldiers

Turkey, May 01: Members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) have killed at least four Turkish soldiers in the eastern parts of the country, officials say.

The PKK attacked a military outpost near the town of Nazimiye in Turkey’s Tunceli province on Saturday.

The commander of the outpost was among those dead, the Associated Press reported.

At least seven other soldiers were wounded in Saturday’s clashes.

Earlier on Wednesday, fighting between Turkish soldiers and PKK militants claimed the lives of at least two soldiers.

Deoband condems ban on veil by Muslim women in Europe

Muzaffarnagar, May 01: A leading Islamic seminary has condemned ban on use of veil by Muslim women in some European countries.

Deputy Vice Chancellor of Darul Uloom Deoband Maulana Abdul Khalique Madrasi has condemned the European countries, especially Belgium, for the law curbing Muslim women to wear veil.

“The act is undemocratic and against secularism. Some anti-Islamic forces are trying to curb the religious freedom of Muslims in these countries,” he alleged.

Smack worth 50 lakhs seized; 4 smugglers held

Allahabad, May 01: Local police has busted a gang of smugglers with the arrest of its four members and seized 500 gm smack worth Rs 50 lakh in the international market from Dhoomanganj area.

Police nailed four smugglers during a checking at Mandvadeeh crossing last night.

On frisking, the illicit substance was recovered from their possession.

Police have lodged a case and a man-hunt has been launched for the absconding members of the gang.

BJP holding talks with JMM leaders

New Delhi, May 01: The BJP is holding meetings with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and other allies here to sort out issues regarding formation of a new Government in case Mr Shibu Soren has to step down as Chief Minister.

Vacancies in Railways

New Delhi, May 01: There are 1,69, 813 vacancies in Railways as on April one, last year, the Rajya Sabha was told today.

Giving this information, Minister of State for Railways E Ahamed said to rectify this situation, streamlining of the working of Railway Recruitment Boards has been undertaken.

Under the new methodology, examination for a particular post will be held on the same date simultaneously by all the Railway Recruitment Boards and in addition to Hindi, Urdu and English, question papers shall be set in local languages, he said in a written reply.

Rihanna to perform despite rib injury

London, May 01: Pop star Rihanna has promised her UK fans she will be fine to play despite her rib injury.
