Wheat prices improve on fresh buying

New Delhi, May 01: Wheat prices rose up to Rs 20 per quintal in the wholesale grains market today on fresh buying from flour mills. However, rice basmati and jowar declined on sluggish demand against adequate stock positions.

Marketmen said, increased offtake by flour mills mainly helped wheat prices to trade higher. Meanwhile, the expectations of a normal monsoon and increased arrivals from producing regions restricted gains.

Israel snubs Turkey on Barak-8

Israel, May 01: Israel has refused to provide Turkey with the advanced Barak-8 missile interceptor over fears it could end up in the possession of the Iranian government.

Intelligence sources in Israel and a number of Western countries claimed on Friday that Turkish naval chiefs have made several requests to acquire Barak-8, which was developed by Israel and India in a joint partnership beginning in 2004.

Equipped with a 360-degree coverage offering radar, the Barak-8 system can be installed on warships to intercept incoming missiles within a 500 meter distance.

Maruti Suzuki April sales soar 30 percent

New Delhi, May 01: The country’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki, Saturday said sales in April rose around 30 percent to 93,058 units, compared to the corresponding month last year.

The company sold 71,748 vehicles in April 2009. Exports were about 13,024 units, a rise of 89 percent, it said in a statement.

The rise in sales took place despite a hike in prices of all cars of the company by up to Rs.10,000 on April 2 following an increase in input costs and introduction of new emission norms.

Bangladesh hands over NDFB chief to India

Guwahati, May 01: Bangladesh authorities Saturday handed over Ranjan Daimary, chief of the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), to India where he is wanted for ordering bomb attacks, officials said.

He is the fifth top separatist leader to be evicted out of Bangladesh in the past four months.

An Indian official said Daimary, along with at least two other NDFB militants, were handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) at a border post in Dawki in Meghalaya early Saturday.

The BSF then handed him over to the Assam Police.

SAfrica police seize largest explosives cache – paper

Cairo, May 01: South African police have seized 2.5 tonnes of explosives of the type robbers use to bomb banks’ cash machines, the Saturday Star newspaper reported.

“It’s the biggest find we have discovered so far,” the paper quoted police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini as saying.

“There were about 100 boxes, each containing 25 kilogrammes of commercial explosives. Our investigations revealed it is the same type of explosives used to bomb ATMs.”

Deoband condemns ban on veil in Europe

Muzzaffarnagar, May 01: A leading Islamic seminary has condemned ban on use of veil by Muslim women in some European countries.

Deputy Vice Chancellor of Darul Uloom Deoband Maulana Abdul Khalique Madrasi has condemned the European countries, especially Belgium, for the law curbing Muslim women to wear veil.

“The act is undemocratic and against secularism. Some anti-Islamic forces are trying to curb the religious freedom of Muslims in these countries,” he alleged.

CBI team in Nashik to quiz Malegaon blast accused

Nashik, May 01: Armed with a court permission, a CBI team from Hyderabad today visited Nashik Road Central Jail and questioned the Malegaon blast accused in the light of some leads emerging in the investigations into the 2007 bomb explosion at a mosque in the Andhra Pradesh capital. CBI officials came to the prison this morning, jail sources said.

U.S., Australia warn of terror attacks in India

Washington, May 01: The United States and Australia on Saturday warned of “imminent” terror attacks on a number of popular shopping centres in New Delhi, stepping up their previous alerts of last month.

The U.S. advisory issued on Wednesday spoke of “increased indications that terrorists are planning imminent attacks” in some of New Delhi’s crowded markets frequented by foreigners.

Some of these markets have been attacked in the past.

Australia asked its citizens to be vigilant.

Delhi court sends Ketan Desai to 13 days judicial custody

New Delhi, May 01: A Delhi court today remanded MCI President Ketan Desai and three others in 13-day judicial custody after their arrest for allegedly taking bribe to allow a medical college in Punjab to admit students despite lack of infrastructure.

Additional Sessions Judge O P Saini sent them to jail till May 14 after the CBI told that their custodial interrogation was no more required in the investigation of the case.

Meanwhile, Desai moved his bail application in the court which has been fixed for hearing on May 3.

Man sentenced to life imprisonment for killing stepson

Firozabad (UP), May 01: A man was sentenced to life imprisonment and a penalty of Rs 1,500 was imposed on him by a local court here for killing his stepson. Noor Hasan killed his stepson Sabir (11) in Ramgarh area of the district on May 11, 2007.

Body of the boy was recovered from a pit two days later, Assistant Government Counsel Achal Singh Rathore said. After hearing both the parties, Additional Sessions Judge Raj Singh Varma held Hasan guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment yesterday, he said.

Kuwait shuts down ‘spy cell’ linked to Iran

Kuwait, May 01: Kuwaiti security agencies have arrested members of suspected spy cell providing Iran with information about both Kuwaiti and US interests, a local daily reported on Saturday.

The alleged cell, of at least seven people, reportedly confessed they were responsible for recruiting members sympathetic to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, al-Qabas daily quoted high-ranking security sources as saying.

New research suggests that depression is common in disadvantaged mothers well beyond the postpartum (immediately after birth) period.

In addition, if depressed moms are treated briefly, their symptoms improve as do their perceptions of their child’s behaviour or the behaviour problems themselves.

Girl raped for leaving Maoist ranks: police

Latehar (Jharkhand), May 10 : A 16-year-old girl affiliated to a Maoist outfit was allegedly raped by other members for fleeing the camp in Latehar district of Jharkhand, police said today.

“The girl ran away from a camp about five days ago.

She was caught by the ultras, beaten up and raped when she refused to return,” Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Dwivedi said.

The Maoists had asked their sympathisers to trace her alleging that she had fled with arms.

The SP said the girl was dumped at a lonely place from where villagers rescued her. She was admitted to a health centre.

Kuwait busts Iran ‘spy cell’: Paper

Kuwait City, May 01: Security agencies in Kuwait have busted a spy cell working for Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, feeding information on Kuwaiti and US targets, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

Citing high-ranking security sources, Al-Qabas daily said Kuwait arrested at least seven men, some of whom served in the Interior and Defence Ministries, while others include bidoon, or stateless Arabs, and other Arabs.

Former KGB agent cremated Hitler: Report

London, May 01: A former Russian secret agent has claimed that he had cremated the remains of Adolf Hitler, but he has refused to locate the place where the Nazi dictator’s ashes were scattered, a media report said.

Ex-KGB officer Vladimir Gumenyuk, now 73, is said to be the last man alive from a team of three sent in 1970 to dig up the bones of Hitler, his mistress Eva Braun and the remains of Joseph Goebbels and his family, ‘The Sun’ reported.

“We were ordered to burn the remains of Hitler and all his entourage, and blow them to the wind,” he said.

Iraq civilian death toll rises sharply in April

Baghdad, May 01: The number of civilians killed by violence in Iraq rose sharply in April from the month before, a sign that insurgents may be trying to exploit political tensions after an election that produced no outright winner.

A total of 274 civilians were killed by bomb blasts or other attacks last month, compared with 216 in March and 211 in February, government figures showed on Saturday. April’s toll was a far cry from the dark days of all-out sectarian war in 2006-07 but remained high.

Washington, May 01: US officials are in talks with Egypt over a plan to make the Middle East a nuclear-free zone, part of an effort to block the Iranian nuclear program, The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.

Citing unnamed US officials, the newspaper said the White House wanted to build on a non-binding agreement that emerged from a 1995 UN review of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Don’t lift gay ban yet: Pentagon

Washington, May 01: Top US military officials urged Congress not to lift or ease a ban on gays serving openly in the armed forces until they have a strategy to address “concerns” about the move among troops.

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates and the chairman of the US Joints Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen, said in a letter to the House Armed Services Committee that they “strongly oppose” any change to the prohibition for now.

Dubai second most popular retail hotspot: Report

Dubai, May 01: Dubai has become the second most popular retail hotspot for international brands, after London, global realty consultant CBRE has said.

According to CB Richard Ellis’s (CBRE) annual report, Dubai is home to the second-highest number of international brands, about 55 per cent of the 294 retailers surveyed.

It is close to the estimates of retailers in London, which has 56 per cent, while Paris and New York have 46 and 44 per cent, respectively.

Dubai has also welcomed new international brands in the past year.

Thai protesters criticise hospital evacuation

Bangkok, May 01: Leaders of Thailand’s “Red Shirt” protests slammed management at a Bangkok hospital on Saturday, saying its chaotic evacuation of patients was a ploy to make the anti-government group look bad.

The Reds have faced heavy criticism after about 100 supporters raided Chulalongkorn hospital on Thursday evening under the mistaken belief it sheltered security forces preparing a crackdown, following deadly street violence.

The 1,400-bed hospital evacuated most of its patients because of the incident, and Red leaders have apologised profusely.

Arizona deputy shot; illegal immigrants suspected

Phoenix, May 01: A veteran sheriff’s deputy was shot and wounded after encountering a group of suspected illegal immigrants who apparently had been hauling bales of marijuana along a major smuggling corridor in the Arizona desert, a violent episode that comes amid a heated national debate over immigration.

State and federal law enforcement agencies deployed helicopters and scores of officers in pursuit of the suspects after the deputy was shot with an AK-47 last afternoon, and the search continued into the night.

Another suspect arrested in 2007 Ajmer blast case

Ajmer, May 01: In a significant development in the 2007 Ajmer Dargah bomb blast case, the Rajasthan Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a second suspect.

“Chandrashekhar, who is suspected to be a key member of the terror module involved in the blast in which three persons were killed, was arrested yesterday from Shajapur,” ATS sources said here today.

He is believed to have links with Hindu outfits, the sources said, adding he will be produced before a local court in Ajmer.
