Cong to lay siege to assembly

Lucknow, April 04: The Congress today said it would lay a siege to the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly after the culmination of its ongoing rallies in the state.

“After the culmination of its Sandesh Yatras, the party, under the stewardship of its youth leader Rahul Gandhi, will lay a siege to the assembly,” a party statement quoting general secretary Digvijay Singh said.

The Congress would also demand the ouster of Chief Minister Mayawati, it said.

39 pilots found alco-positive before flight

New Delhi, May 04: As many as 39 pilots or co-pilots were found alco-positive during the pre-flight breath-analyzer test last year, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel told the Rajya Sabha today.

“39 cases have been reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) from January 2009 to December 2009, where pilots or co-pilots were found to have consumed alcohol during pre-flight breath-analyzer test,” Patel said in a written reply.

Chemist shop burgled in Vasant Vihar

New Delhi, May 04: Unidentified men burgled a chemist shop in south Delhi and decamped with Rs seven lakh early this morning, police said.

The incident took place in Vasant Vihar and came to light at about 9 am when owner V K Gupta came to open his shop.

The shop was found broke open and police were informed.

He claimed Rs seven lakh which was kept in the cash box was missing. Everything else was intact.

India likely to give Kasab judgment copy to Pakistan

New Delhi, May 04: India is likely to provide Pakistan a copy of the judgment of the Mumbai special court that held Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.

According to home ministry sources, the judgment will help the Pakistan government take action against Jamaat-ud-dawa chief Hafiz Saeed and Laskhar-e-Taiba commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, the masterminds of the Mumbai attack that left 166 people dead and 244 injured.

While Lakhvi is in Pakistani custody, Saeed is still free.

Three killed in crackers explosion in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, May 04: At least three members of a family were killed and eight others injured when a bundle of fireworks exploded inside a house in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district Tuesday, police said.

The accident took place in Rampur’s Milakkhanam area inside a house where crackers were being manufactured.

“The explosion was so intense that a couple and their son died on the spot. All the three were involved in manufacturing crackers,” a police officer said.

“Those injured are being treated at a hospital, where the condition of three of them is stated to be critical,” he added.

Election panel recommends 3-year poll bar on P.C.Thomas

New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram, May 04: The Election Commission Tuesday recommended to the president that former minister P.C. Thomas be barred from contesting any election for the next three years as he had violated the model code of conduct during the 2004 Lok Sabha polls.

‘Killing machine’ Kasab deserves death: Nikam

Mumbai, May 04: Ajmal Amir Kasab is “Satan, a devil” and “a killing machine” and deserves the death penalty, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told the court Tuesday a day after the Pakistani terrorist was held guilty in the 26/11 terror mayhem in Mumbai.

In his arguments before Special Judge M.L. Tahaliyani, Nikam said Kasab had been convicted for mass murder and waging war against India. “If all these are read together, the maximum punishment is death and minimum is life imprisonment,” Nikam said.

Two constables arrested in Sohrabuddin case

Gandhinagar, May 04: After the arrest of Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Vipul Agrawal Monday night in connection with the killing in a fake gun fight of Tulsi Prajapati, the sole eyewitness of the Sohrabuddin Sheikh staged killing, two constables of the Gujarat police were arrested Tuesday.

Prajapati, a close associate of Sohrabuddin, was killed in Banaskantha district in December 2006, about a year after Sohrabuddin’s elimination in Ahmedabad.

40-year-old man electrocuted in Delhi

New Delhi, May 04: A 40-year-old man was electrocuted here Tuesday, police said.

“Ram Sunder Pandey, a pan vendor, was electrocuted when he switched on a booster pump at 6 a.m. in Baljeet Nagar in west Delhi,” a police officer said.

Pandey was taken to the hospital but was declared brought dead.

“We are waiting for the post-mortem examination report to determine the exact cause of death,” the officer added.

Iran begins making anti-cruise missile shield

Tehran, May 04: Iran began building a powerful missile defence system which can fire 4,000 shots per minute and destroy cruise missiles heading towards the country, Iranian defence ministry announced Tuesday.

“Mesbah 1 (Lantern) air-defence system is designed to counter air attacks, defferent kind of airplanes, cruise missiles, choppers and other air threats in low altitudes,” Iranian Defence Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi said.

“The defence system has been designed on the basis of increasing the volume of fire and controlling it by a reliable system,” Vahidi added.

LeT operative jailed for 14 days

Hyderabad, May 04: A city court Tuesday sent an alleged operative of Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) to judicial custody for two weeks a day after he was arrested.

Mohammed Zia-ul-Haq, who was arrested by the Hyderabad police Monday, was presented before the VIIIth additional metropolitan magistrate Tuesday evening.

The accused, who allegedly underwent arms training in Pakistan, was shifted to Cherlapally Jail on the city outskirts after the magistrate remanded him in judicial custody.

India lifts ban on travel to Iraq

New Delhi, May 04: India Tuesday lifted the ban on grant of emigration clearance for Indians wishing to travel to Iraq but cautioned that people should take care of their security while working or visiting the oil-rich country.

“The government has decided, in order to facilitate travel by Indian nationals to Iraq on work and/or for visits, not to extend the ban on the grant of emigration clearance, which had been issued under Section 31(1) of the Emigration Act, 1983,” an official advisory said.

Passengers protest cancellation of GoAir flight

New Delhi, May 04: Passengers bound for Kochi by the GoAir flight Tuesday protested at the Indira Gandhi Airport here after the flight was cancelled due to operational problems.

Around 20 passengers were stranded after the flight scheduled to take off at 1.35 p.m. was cancelled, Zakir Hussain, one of the passengers, told.

No hike in electricity tariff for Delhi

New Delhi, May 04: The Delhi government announced Tuesday that the electricity tariff in the capital will remain unchanged for the time being.

The Delhi government announced in a statement that the tariff in various categories would stay at last year’s level.

Earlier, the government received some representations from the three distribution companies on the issue of severe cash flow constraints affecting their ability to purchase power in 2010-11.

New chiefs for Mahila Congress in MP, Assam

New Delhi, May 04: Senior Congress leader Archana Jaiswal was today appointed president of Madhya Pradesh unit of Mahila Congress.

In Assam, Sharifa Beghum has been made the president of Mahila Congress, where the party is in power, party sources said.

The changes were made amid complaints that some of the women wing chiefs had occupied the position for as long as ten years or more.

Monorail to provide pollution-free travel: MMRDA

Mumbai, May 04: The ambitious Monorail project which aims at easing Mumbai’s traffic, would provide pollution-free travel, MMRDA officials said today.

According to Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) officials, the Monorail will not only save commuting time of Mumbaikars but also fuel.

“Since the Monorail does not require any fossil fuel for its operation it remains free of air pollution, and as it runs on a narrow 0.8-meter beam with the help of rubber tyres it makes very little noise,” MMRDA Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad said in a statement.

4 domestic carriers suspend cargo operations at IGI

New Delhi, May 04: Four domestic carriers have suspended cargo operations from today to protest against alleged “unfair practices” by the outsourced cargo service agency and the airport operator.

“Since neither DIAL nor the outsourced agency are listening to our problems, we have decided to suspend our cargo operations from this afternoon,” an airlines official at the cargo terminal said.

Mumbai, May 04: Vivek Oberoi recently locked himself in his vanity van for more than an hour when he came to know that Salman was standing just outside the van.

It so happened that Vivek Oberoi and Salman Khan landed up at the same venue by chance. So, when Vivek came to know that Salman is standing outside his vanity van, he preferred to stay indoors rather than cross the path with Salman.
