8 lose eyesight after cataract surgery

Indore, May 05: Eight elderly patients, who underwent a free cataract surgery at Indore’s Bombay Hospital in January, have lost their eyesight.

They have lodged a complaint with the district administration officials. Around 53 patients, all from Narmada Nagar of Khandwa district, about 120 km from here, were operated for cataract at a camp organised by the Narmada Hydro Electric Development Corporation Ltd (NHDC).

England qualified for the Super Eights stage

Guyana, May 05: England entered the Super Eights stage of the Twenty20 World Cup after rain washed out their crucial Group D match against Ireland here.

With each team getting one point, England qualified for the Super Eights stage, thanks to their superior net run-rate.

39 pilots, alco-positive, before flight

New Delhi, May 05: As many as 39 pilots or co-pilots were found alco-positive during the pre-flight breath-analyzer test last year, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel told the Rajya Sabha today.

“39 cases have been reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) from January 2009 to December 2009, where pilots or co-pilots were found to have consumed alcohol during pre-flight breath-analyzer test,” Patel said in a written reply.

Prajapati encounter was fake

Ahmedabad, May 05: The Gujarat police has accepted as fake the encounter in which Tulsi Prajapati, a key witness in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh murder case, was killed, top state CID officials said.

“We believed that his (Prajapati) encounter was fake. So, we investigated the case and found involvement of some police officers,” CID crime chief V V Rabari said.

District Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Dahod and IPS officer Vipul Agarwal was arrested last night for his involvement in Parajapati’s encounter killing.

Friendship over sex, new mantra

Sydney, May 05: A survey on nearly 150,000 romantic hopefuls has found that when looking for love, friendship is their number one priority, while sex was not thought to be that important.

The survey, by online dating website eHarmony.com.au, revealed that friendship and chemistry came in as the top two most popular relationship ideals among all age groups, reported.

Both genders placed friendship and chemistry as the two most important qualities, and while women placed more importance on kindness men did not.

Sex in car OK in Dubai!

Dubai, May 05: With the Islamic country increasingly cracking down on any display of affection, it was a surprise that a Pak couple managed to beat a sex rap.

A Dubai appeals court has thrown out a public indecency conviction after a Pakistani husband and wife claimed the car they were caught canoodling in was a private place.

Their lawyer, Majid Al Kabban, confirmed on Tuesday that the ruling by a lower court, which had sentenced the two to a month in prison and deportation, was overturned last week.

The couple successfully argued their car should be treated like a private house.

Thai protesters hold ground on Bangkok’s streets

Bangkok, May 05: Anti-government protesters in Thailand held their ground on the streets of Bangkok on Wednesday and said they would stay there until Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva sets a date for dissolving parliament.

Protest leaders, who had demanded an immediate poll, have agreed to enter into a reconciliation process proposed by Abhisit but have taken issue with his offer for a general election on Nov. 14 and said they were not ready to leave their fortified encampment in central Bangkok.

NY bomb suspect said to admit plot, Pakistan training

Washington, May 05: A Pakistani-American admitted trying to detonate a bomb in New York’s busy Times Square and receiving bomb-making training in a known Taliban and al Qaeda stronghold in Pakistan, U.S. prosecutors said.

Prosecutors charged Faisal Shahzad, 30, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Pakistan, with five counts, including attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and trying to kill and maim people within the United States.

Bolivian president’s car stolen

La Paz, May 05: A car used by Bolivian President Evo Morales was stolen when the driver went to buy bread rolls for the president’s breakfast, officials said.

The robbery took place Sunday morning in San Pedro area here in the Bolivian capital, when the driver got out of the vehicle to go buy rolls. There is, however, still no information on the SUV’s whereabouts, an official said Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses said a ‘bald male took the wheel and drove the car away’.

U.S. working closely with Pak on Times Square bomb case

Washington, May 05: The U.S. is working closely with Pakistan to unearth the terrorist plot around the Times Square car bomb case, as possible Pakistani links emerge in the probe, the State Department said today.

“We are working closely with the government of Pakistan regarding the ongoing investigation of the bomb plot in Times Square,” Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs P.J. Crowley told reporters at his daily press briefing.

Federal authorities have arrested Pakistan-born US national Faisal Shahzad, 30, on charges of planting a car bomb in New York City.

Motormen strike call off

Mumbai, May 05: In a respite to the commuters of Mumbai, the railway motormen strike has been called off on Tuesday after the negotiations with the government.

The decision to call off the strike came after Mahrashtra Home Minister RR Patil negotiated with the motormen over their demands and reched a settlement.

Terror modules busted; Hyderabad’s HITEC city on LeT radar

New Delhi, May 05: : A massive crackdown on sleeper cells of Lashker-e-Taiba was being carried out nationwide and along the friendly neighbouring countries and three such modules were busted so far which included the terror group’s nefarious design to target Hyderabad’s HITEC city.

Raids were being carried at nearly a dozen places throughout the country following reports of sleeper cells of LeT mushrooming in suburban and urban areas, government sources said.

Iran begins making anti-cruise missile shield

Tehran, May 05: Iran began building a powerful missile defence system which can fire 4,000 shots per minute and destroy cruise missiles heading towards the country, Iranian defence ministry announced Tuesday.

‘Mesbah 1 (Lantern) air-defence system is designed to counter air attacks, defferent kind of airplanes, cruise missiles, choppers and other air threats in low altitudes,’ Iranian Defence Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi said.

‘The defence system has been designed on the basis of increasing the volume of fire and controlling it by a reliable system,’ Vahidi added.

17 killed in Peru bus accident

Lima, May 05: At least 17 people were killed and 30 injured in a bus accident in Peru, officials said.

The bus carrying officials of the Pampino company plunged into a ravine near Tarica town Monday evening, a police spokesmen was quoted as saying Tuesday by Radio Programas del Peru.

The injured were taken to hospitals, but some of the bodies are still in the wreckage, the spokesmen said.

Over 3,500 people were killed in traffic accidents in 2009. The accidents also left 46,000 others injured and caused $1 billion in losses.

IPS officer questioned in Sohrabuddin case

Ahmedabad, May 04: Senior Gujrat cadre IPS officer Geeta Johri was questioned today by CBI in connection with Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.

Geeta was earlier investigating the Sohrabuddin case.

Rajnish Rai, another IPS officer who had headed the investigation earlier and retired IPS officer G C Raigar were also questioned in the same case today. Raigar is a former chief of CID Crime which had earlier investigated the fake encounter.

Manmohan speaks to Sushma on n-bill

New Delhi, May 04: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj said on Tuesday that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had spoken to her on the nuclear safety bill and indicated that her party will not object to its introduction in parliament if the government redrafts it to increase the liability of nuclear plant operators in case of an accident.

In her valedictory remarks at the conference on “Democracy: Challenges of Consensus Building in India” organized by the Jagran Forum, she said the prime minister had told her not to oppose the bill at the introduction stage.

Videocon appeals for revoking ban

New Delhi, May 04: Blacklisted by the World Bank for alleged corruption and wrong doing, Videocon Industries today said that it has moved a petition to revoke the ban.

“We approached the World Bank in February, 2010, to revoke the ban … after some hearings, we hope it will be done,” Videocon Chairman Venugopal Dhoot told reporters, shortly after the global lender’s decision became public.

Dhoot said that the action came on account of some wrong information given by one of its employees in a tender in 2003 for supplying airconditioners worth about USD 50,000.

India to give Kasab judgment copy to Pak

New Delhi, May 04: India is likely to provide Pakistan a copy of the judgement of the Mumbai special court that held Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.

According to home ministry sources, the judgment will help the Pakistan government take action against Jamaat-ud-dawa chief Hafiz Saeed and Laskhar-e-Taiba commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, the masterminds of the Mumbai attack that left 166 people dead and 244 injured.

While Lakhvi is in Pakistani custody, Saeed is still free.

ACB sleuths arrest Ranga Reddy joint collector

Hyderabad, May 04: The Andhra Pradesh Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday arrested an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer after it claimed to have unearthed assets worth over Rs 20 crore that were disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The Central Investigation Unit of the ACB raided the residence of M Jaganmohan, a 1999-batch IAS officer currently posted as Joint Collector of Ranga Reddy district, and claimed to have seized three kilograms of gold, Rs 15 lakh in cash and many property documents.

Ahmedabad, May 04: CBI today questioned Geeta Johri, senior Gujarat cadre IPS officer and former investigating officer in Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter killing case in connection with the 2005 incident.

Rajnish Rai, another IPS officer who had headed the investigation earlier, and retired IPS officer G C Raigar were also questioned in the same case today. Raigar is a former chief of CID Crime which had earlier investigated the fake encounter.

Man electrocuted while switching on DJB water pump

New Delhi, May 04: A 40-year-old man was electrocuted in west Delhi early this morning when he attempted to switch on a booster pump of Delhi Jal Board, police said.

The incident was reported from Baljeet Nagar at around 6 am and the victim has been identified as Shyam Sunder Pandey, a pan vendor.

The mishap occurred when he switched on an electric booster pump connected to an underground water storage tank and got electrocuted.

Pandey was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital where he was declared brought dead.
