Chinese rescuers in Myanmar after mine accident

Beijing, May 05: Chinese rescue workers entered Myanmar to recover the bodies of Chinese miners killed by a landslide at a mine near the border, the Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

At least 13 Chinese miners were killed in the Monday afternoon landslide at the mine, about 3 km (1.8mile) inside Myanmar, Xinhua said. Five others were brought to a hospital in Tengchong, a town in China’s Yunnan Province, while two others are still missing.

Militants attack Afghan district headquarters

Kabul, May 05: Taliban militants have attacked an Afghan district headquarters in eastern Afghanistan.

Taliban and local officials confirmed the attack late Tuesday in Nangarhar province.

Provincial spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai said Wednesday that authorities were trying to determine the number of casualties. The Taliban said 15 police and two of its fighters were killed.

Patna, May 05: Move over corporate houses, here comes the Bihar government! A state government undertaking has adopted seven orphaned girls living in a child care home in Patna to provide them education and better life as part of its corporate social responsibility ( CSR).

The Bihar State Road Development Corporation Ltd ( BSRDCL) will bear the entire cost of their education till they pass their Class XII examinations. A sum of Rs 1,500 per month for each child has been earmarked for the purpose.

Mumbai, May 05: Imran Khan had to ‘suffer’ the brunt of his director Punit Malhotra’s ‘creative instincts’ while shooting for I Hate Luv Storys in Goa. The team was filming a club song on the beaches of Goa with a bunch of good-looking guys and girls.

Delhi liquor sales rise but Gurgaon drinking more

New Delhi, May 05: Gurgaon residents are way ahead of their Delhi counterparts when it comes to polishing off their drinks.

While alcohol sales in Delhi increased by 14 per cent last fiscal, the corresponding figure in the Haryana city stands at 78.59 per cent.

Alcohol sales in the Capital rose to Rs 1,630 crore in 2009- 2010, slightly exceeding the government’s estimates, according to excise officials.

3-year-old rescued from well

Abu Dhabi, May 05: The Abu Dhabi Police managed to rescue a three-year-old Pakistani boy who fell into 11-metre-deep well of a low-cost residence in Mazeid district in Al Ain.

The doctors said the boy suffered light bruises.

The rescue team of the emergency and public security section of Abu Dhabi Police in Al Ain rushed to the scene and lifted him from the well.

Narendra Modi to PM: Withdraw new panel on Narmada project

Gandhinagar, May 05: In a letter to prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh, chief minister Narendra Modi has requested him to direct the ministry of environment and forests to withdraw its order for formation of a committee to review the environmental steps taken under Sardar Sarovar Project.

The CM’s letter says that the decision of the ministry is not in accordance with the present provisions of the Narmada Yojana and the Supreme Court order of October 20, 2000. Modi handed over the letter to the prime minister late on Monday evening.

New Delhi, May 05: A special CBI court on Tuesday held businessman Moninder Singh Pandhers domestic help Surender Kohli guilty in the rape and murder of seven-year-old Arti in one of the 19 cases of Nithari killings.

Special Additional District and Session Judge A K Singh, who convicted Kohli in the Arti murder case, is expected to pronounce the quantum of sentence on Monday.

New Delhi, May 05: In a major blow to investigating agencies, the Supreme Court today declared as “illegal” use of narco-analysis, brain-mapping and polygraph tests on suspects.

“We are of the considered opinion that no individual can be forced and subjected to such techniques involuntarily, and by doing so it amounts to unwarranted intrusion of personal liberty,” a bench headed by Chief Justice K. G. Balakrishnan said.

Cancelling labour card during annual leave unlawful

Abu Dhabi, May 05: The Ministry of Labour warned employers against cancelling the labour card of a worker during his annual leave, denouncing such a measure as unlawful.

In such case, the worker is entitled to a salary of three months and can shift to another firm without the consent of his sponsor.

The open day committee at the Ministry of Labour received on Monday a complaint from a worker stating that his employer had cancelled his labour card right away after his return from his annual leave.

This means that he initiated the measure during the holiday.

CM throws her weight behind power discoms

New Delhi, May 05: Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday invoked a legal provision she has never used before to suspend announcement of this fiscal’s power tariff and let the city’s power companies argue their case for more funds.

The chief minister, who holds the power portfolio, directed the city’s power regulator, the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission ( DERC), to have consumers billed according to the existing tariff for now.

She asked the regulator to first hear out the power companies and advise the government on the issues they have raised before fixing the tariff.

Supreme Court rejects PCO judges’ petitions against contempt notices

Islamabad, May 05: In the first case of its kind, the Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the appeals filed by 10 judges including former chief justice Abdul Hameed Dogar who had taken oath under Provisional Constitution Order (PCO) against the contempt of court notices issued to them.

A five-member bench of the court led by Justice Nasirul Mulk ruled that the petitions were not maintainable and fixed May 10 the date for regular hearing of contempt of court proceedings against them.

Karachi, May 05: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Tuesday dismissed the impression that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was a friendly opposition in the parliament.

Dutch prosecutor appeals Holocaust cartoon acquittal

Sterdam, May 05: The Dutch public prosecutor has appealed against a court ruling acquitting a Muslim group of insulting Jews with a cartoon suggesting they invented the Holocaust, in a case testing the bounds of free speech.

The court ruled last month the cartoon published by the Arab European League (AEL) showed “bad taste” and was “exceptionally offensive”, but it acquitted the group on charges it insulted Jews because of the context in which the cartoon was published.

Mulayam kin nabbed for arson

Lucknow, May 05: In the past three days, the Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested two relatives of Samajwadi Party ( SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for their alleged involvement in criminal activities.

Pramod Gupta, Mulay- am’s brother- in- law, was arrested on Tuesday on the charge of setting a UP Roadways’ bus on fire during a protest on April 27. He was produced before the Auraiya district court and sent to jail.

Boys’ bid to cross border foiled

Srinagar, May 05: The Imam of a mosque in Regipora in Kupwara district near here recently stopped six minors from crossing to Pakistan- occupied Kashmir.

According to the Imam, six boys aged between 8 and 13 approached him asking for money late on May 1. The Imam, who suspected the intentions of these strangers, handed them over to the Kupwara police. The police said these minors were from Palhalan village of Pattan Tehsil in Baramulla district and were students of New Islamia Model School there.

‘ No rollback of fuel price hike’

New Delhi, May 05: Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday firmly ruled out any rollback in petroleum duties that have led to an increase in fuel prices.

Replying to discussions on the Finance Bill in the Rajya Sabha, Mukherjee said: “ I am sorry I cannot do it ( price rollback) although I would have liked to. The situation is very difficult.” There were murmurs of protest from the Opposition benches but the Chair put the Bill to vote immediately in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

It brought to an end all formalities in passing the budget for the current fiscal.

Strike stalls life in Maximum City

Mumbai, May 05: The Motormen’s strike in Mumbai paralysed for two days its suburban rail network that ferries over seven million commuters daily.

Central Railway Motormen’s Association, backed by the Shiv Sena, had warned they would work hungry on Monday demanding better pay and allowances. They were supported by their Western Railway counterparts.

While the effect of the strike started to show on the Central Railway’s harbour network by Monday afternoon, the services on the main lines were paralysed by evening. Those who worked in south Mumbai had a trying time getting home.
