India not to curb population with law: Azad

New Delhi, May 05: India, the world’s second most populous country, is against controlling population growth through legislation, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said Wednesday.

“I firmly believe that equitable, inclusive and sustainable growth of India depends on healthy and stable population. It is a matter of great concern and urgent steps need to be taken to stabilise the population for sustainable development,” Azad said here.

The minister was addressing a national workshop on Repositioning Family Planning for Maternal and Child Health.

Doctors who did scribe’s autopsy issued notice

Ranchi, May 05: Three doctors, who conducted the post-mortem examination of Delhi-based journalist Nirupama Pathak found dead at her Jharkhand home April 29, have been issued show-cause notices for not preserving the viscera and foetus of the scribe.

“Three doctors who conducted autopsy of Nirupama have been issued show-cause (notice) and explanation has been sought from them for not preserving the viscera and foetus,” Koderma Sadar Hospital civil surgeon B. Mohan said Wednesday.

According to officials, the doctors team also did not mention the time of her death.

Shahrukh not interested in Big B’s films

Mumbai, May 05: Shahrukh is not interested in doing any more films that are the remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s films. Though he was part of the film DON earlier but now SRK is not interested in doing such films anymore.

B.Ed exam cancelled in UP due to paper leak

Lucknow, May 05: Test papers of the combined entrance examination for admission in B.Ed course in Uttar Pradesh were leaked in Farukkhabad district, leading to the cancellation of the exam scheduled for Wednesday, even as four persons have been arrested in this connection.

“Four persons have been arrested in Farukkhabad district last evening in this connection and computerised and handwritten copies of the B.Ed exam were recovered after which it was decided to cancel the test,” Additional Director General of Police Brij Lal told reporters.

Iranian Navy begins major drill

Tehran, May 05: The Iranian Navy has started an eight day military exercise in the country’s southern seas to display its strength in defending Iran’s territorial waters.

The maneuver, called “Velayat 89,” will be conducted in the Sea of Oman and the strategic waterway connecting it to the Persian Gulf.

The drill which started on Wednesday will cover a large area stretching from the Strait of Hormuz to the northern Indian Ocean and has six phases.

The security of the Strait of Hormuz has global significance, as almost 40 percent of the world’s crude passes through the waterway.

No doctor for youth boxers ahead of World C’ship finals

New Delhi, May 05: It was the most draining tourney of their nascent boxing careers but World Youth Championships gold-medallist Vikas Krishan and silver-medallist Shiva Thapa didn’t have a doctor to take care of their niggles ahead of their summit clashes in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The volcanic ash cloud over Europe that disrupted air traffic for a week meant that the championships started a couple of days later than scheduled, thereby sending the participating teams’ travel plans haywire.

New Delhi, May 05: A major fire broke out in a factory in the Okhla industrial area here Wednesday, the Delhi Fire Service said.

Twenty-four fire engines battled the flames, an official said. No one has been reportedly injured.

Dubai, May 05: The Arabian Travel Market 2010, an exhibition showcasing travel and tourism industry in the region, has opened here at the Dubai World Trade Center.

The event was inaugurated Tuesday by Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, deputy ruler of Dubai.

The number of participants in the 2010 edition of Arabian Travel Market is 15 percent higher than previous year, according to organisers.

Army officer commits suicide

Meerut, May 05: A 35-year-old army officer allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan at his house here, police said.

Jitendra Singh, posted at Ambala, came on 15 days leave to visit his relatives.

Singh yesterday committed suicide when he was alone in the house. The reason for taking the extreme step is not known yet.

Uttar Pradesh lawyers on strike to protest police excesses

Lucknow, May 05: The functioning of courts in Uttar Pradesh was affected Wednesday when lawyers in various districts of the state struck work protesting last month’s alleged police excesses against their colleagues in Kanpur.

The Uttar Pradesh Bar Council clarified it has not called the strike. The call was given by different lawyers’ associations that met Tuesday in Kanpur, some 80 km from Lucknow.

Confession of Kasab nailed him in 26/11 terror attack’

Mumbai, May 05: The 26/11 court has accepted a major portion of the confession given by convicted terrorist Ajmal Kasab in which he talked about the involvement of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayeba and the security apparatus of the neighbouring country in the diabolic attacks.

“I have accepted most part of the confession and also held that it was voluntarily given by Kasab and not given under duress as claimed by him,” Judge M L Tahaliyani said while pronouncing the operative part of the verdict on Monday.

Mogadishu, May 05: Somali government forces have reportedly killed a senior al-Qaeda commander named Anwar Mohamed Abubakar during violent clashes with militants.

Abubakar, an Egyptian national, was reportedly killed in Mogadishu’s northern district on Monday as he was commanding a group of al-Shabab fighters in heavy clashes with government forces.

Man gets ten years of RI for killing wife over dowry

Meerut, May 05: A local court today sentenced a man to ten years of rigorous imprisonment for killing his wife over dowry.

The District Court held Promod Singh, husband of the victim Aneeta, guilty of murdering her and also imposed a fine of Rs 7,000 on him.

The court, however, acquitted Singh”s parents and his two brothers from all charges citing lack of evidence.

In March 2007, Aneeta”s father had lodged a complaint in Behsuma police station accusing his son-in-law for murdering his daughter for dowry.

3 die in workshop explosion

Rampur, May 05: Three members of a family, including a woman, were killed and 14 others injured in an explosion at a fireworks manufacturing workshop, set up in a house at a village here, police said today.

The owner of the factory Shaghir Ahmad (60), wife Shamim Jaha (55) and their son Irshad (30) died last evening in the explosion at Nagaria village that destroyed their house and affected some nearby constructions as well, they added.

Asian stocks dive on Europe debt concerns, 5th Ld-Writethru

Singapore, May 05: Asian stocks slid Wednesday, following a plunge in U.S. equities as concerns spread that Europe’s attempt to contain Greece’s debt crisis won’t stop it spreading to other countries. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 408.77 points, or 2 percent, to 20,354.28 while China’s benchmark index in Shanghai dropped 2.1 percent.

Australia skidded 1.9 percent, Indonesia slid 1.5 percent and Singapore sank 1.2 percent. Markets in Japan, South Korea and Thailand were closed for holidays.

Dikshit not in favour of increasing power tariff

New Delhi, May 05: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said she was not in favour of increasing electricity charges at the moment. Her comments came a day after she issued directives to the city”s power regulator DERC to keep the power tariffs at the existing level.

“We will hold the meeting with the discoms as well DERC soon to review the situation. But I feel that the power tariff should not be increased at the moment,” Dikshit told reporters at a function here.

Crude oil falls on poor global cues

New Delhi, May 05: Crude oil prices lost Rs 34 or 0.91 per cent to Rs 3,702 per barrel in futures trading today, as traders reduced their positions on the back of falling global trend. Trading sentiment turned bearish, as oil prices hovered above USD 82 in the Asian trade after dropping sharply on a stronger dollar, analysts said.

Bajaj to roll out two 3-wheelers by June-end

New Delhi, May 05: Bajaj Auto, the country’s largest manufacturer of three wheelers, today said it will launch two new products on two new platforms by June. ”We will be launching two new products (three wheelers) on two new vehicle platforms by the end of the current quarter (April-June),” company CEO (commercial vehicles) R C Maheswari told reporters here today.

While one of them will be in the passenger segment, the other offering will be in the cargo category, he informed.

”We will launch the RE 445L diesel in the passenger segment and the RE 900 in the cargo segment,” he said.

World’s biggest cargo airport to open in Dubai

Dubai, May 05: Dubai’s second airport which is designed to be the world’s largest is set to start operations from June 27 for cargo only.

According to Dubai Airports chief executive officer Paul Griffiths, the Al-Maktoum International Airport, which is designed to be the world’s largest when completed, plans to receive passengers next year.

He said that the passenger terminal is scheduled to be ready by the end of this year and that it will enter service at the beginning of the summer season in 2011, towards the end of March.

Pakistan arrests suspects linked to Times Square bomber

Islamabad, May 05: Pakistani authorities have arrested several suspects reportedly linked to the failed car bombing in New York.

Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized US citizen of Pakistani origin, was arrested in the US Monday over the failed attack.

Shahzad’s friend Tausef and father-in-law Iftikhar Mian were picked up by intelligence personnel from a house in the southern city of Karachi, Xinhua reported Wednesday quoting the Dawn newspaper.

According to the report, Faisal’s wife Huma Mian and two children are in Pakistan but it could not be confirmed if his wife had also been detained.

Modi gas company cries foul over illegal coal mining

New Delhi, May 05: The Y.K. Modi-promoted Great Eastern Energy Corporation Limited (GEECL) has written to the Centre that areas allocated to it for gas exploration are being mined illegally. GEECL’s chairman and CEO, Y.K. Modi said in his letter to minister of state for coal Shriprakash Jaiswal that such illegal mining could prove “very dangerous as methane accounts for maximum blasts in mines.

Maoists kill Congress leader, 2 CPI-M workers

Midnapore, May 05: Bodies of a Congress leader and two CPI-M workers killed by suspected Maoists were found on Wednesday near Lalgarh in West Midnapore district.

Bikash Mahato (40), working President of Jhargram Block Congress, was shot dead by Maoists this morning and his body was found near roadside at Baghmuri village, police said.

Mahato was picked up by armed Maoists from his residence last afternoon. Maoists suspected him to be working as police informer.

India gold demand retreats as rupee weakens

New Delhi, May 05: India gold buying retreated on Wednesday afternoon as a weak rupee made the dollar-quoted yellow metal expensive, despite a pick-up earlier in the week when prices tumbled from a five-month high.

“I did more than 150 kgs yesterday at about $1,175 (an ounce), and I have booked only 60 kgs since morning as the rupee is weak,” said a dealer with a state-run bullion dealing bank in Mumbai.
