AIIMS conducts India’s 1st robot-assisted surgery

New Delhi, May 06: He looks like an airplane pilot in his cockpit. Except that he is a surgeon and he isn’t in a cockpit. This pilot in question is Prem Nath Dogra, a doctor, and he mans a surgical console. He is monitoring a robot fitted with four arms that he deftly manipulates to conduct a complex operation.

It’s a scene from India’s first robot-assisted surgery last month conducted by Dogra, head and professor in the Department of Urology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

N.Korea’s Kim ready to rejoin nuclear talks: report

Beijing, May 06: North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il has told President Hu Jintao on a rare trip to China he is ready to return to stalled nuclear disarmament negotiations, a media report said Thursday.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, without citing sources, said Kim made the pledge during more than four hours of talks with the Chinese president on Wednesday, during which Hu asked that Pyongyang come back to the table.

London, May 06: Voters go to the polls on Thursday in what is forecast to be the closest election since 1992, with the Conservatives struggling to convert their opinion poll advantage into an outright majority.

The Conservatives, led by former public relations executive David Cameron, have seen their poll lead dwindle since the turn of the year, with voters seemingly reluctant to embrace their call for change after 13 years of rule by Labour.

No bomb found in truck on New York bridge: Police

New York, May 06: No bomb was found in a truck abandoned on New York City’s Triborough Bridge on Wednesday night and the busy roads connecting the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx will reopen shortly, police said.

New York police department spokesperson Paul Browne said the bridge was shut down after a worker on the bridge found the vehicle, a U-Haul rental truck with Arizona license plates, abandoned and smelling of gas.

Browne said the police bomb squad X-rayed the vehicle and found it to be empty.

Bihar, Bandh by Maoists

Patna, May 06: Security measures have been beefed up in north Bihar for the 48-hour shutdown called by the proscribed CPI (Maoist) from Thursday to protest against alleged police attempt to foil a ‘democratic action’ of the Maoist backed outfit, Mahangai Virodhi Morcha.

“All police stations in the Naxal-infested areas in Tirhut and Darbhanga divisions in Bihar have been put on maximum alert,” sources said.

Extra security attention was being paid to protect vital installations, including property of railways, in the divisions, they said.

House seal to ‘ green court’

New Delhi, May 06: Parliament has given its seal of approval to set up a National Green Tribunal ( NGT) with five benches across India. It will exclusively hear all environmental cases in the country.

After the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha too on Tuesday passed the National Green Tribunal Bill.

With an estimated 5,000- plus matters pending on environmental issues across the country, the NGT will fast- track such cases and help ease the load on the justice system, while allowing quick relief to the applicants in such cases.

Thai PM may dissolve Parliament

Bangkok, May 06: Thailand’s prime minister said Thursday he would dissolve Parliament in September — meeting a key demand of anti-government protesters — but only if they end their crippling occupation of Bangkok’s commercial district.

Following the unveiling of a roadmap to reconciliation Monday, protest leaders demanded Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva specify a date for Parliament’s dissolution before they pulled out of their barricaded encampment in the heart of the Thai capital.

25 dead after tornado, storm in southwestern China

Beijing, May 06: A tornado and strong winds in southwestern China killed 25 people and injured more than 150 early Thursday, state media reported.

Several homes collapsed in the city of Chongqing, but the number was still being tallied, said the disaster relief director at the Chongqing civil affairs bureau.

The director, who gave only his surname Ma, disputed a China News online report that 1,000 homes had collapsed. “It’s definitely not that many,” he said.

Oops, wrong house: Workmen dig up trees, then flee

Canberra, May 06: Two workmen used a backhoe to dig up grass, topsoil and 10 palm trees from an Australian front yard before realizing they were at the wrong address and fleeing, a homeowner said Thursday.

Peter Collard, 56, said the culprits did an estimated 20,000 Australian ($18,000) in damage in front of a six-bedroom house he was trying to sell in the eastern city of Brisbane — and that his insurer told him none of the damage was covered by his policy.

A TEAM of Jharkhand Police officers will be in the Capital on Thursday to probe the alleged murder of Delhibased journalist Nirupama Pathak.

The 22-year old is suspected to have been murdered at her native place in Koderma, Jharkhand, by her family in a case of alleged honour killing. She fell in love with a boy from a lower caste and wanted to marry him against her parents’ wishes. She was three months pregnant at the time of her death.

Ananth jibe derails caste census debate

New Delhi, May 06: Uproarious scenes over BJP leader Ananth Kumar’s unparliamentary remarks against RJD chief Lalu Prasad in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday derailed the much- hyped discussion on the inclusion of caste in the 2011 Census.

Kumar, who initiated the discussion on the Census issue, deviated from the subject to make a political point. In his bid to project the BJP as a “ nationalist” party, Kumar made a remark insinuating that Lalu and others were “ Gaddar” ( traitors) touching many a raw nerves.

NATO soldier killed in southern Afghanistan

Kabul, May 06: NATO says an allied soldier has died following a small-arms attack in southern Afghanistan.

The allied coalition did not provide further details Thursday about the incident a day earlier.

The death raises to seven the number of NATO soldiers killed in the country so far this month.

Maha imposes capital value system for property tax

Mumbai, May 06: Maharashtra Government has imposed capital value-based system to calculate property tax on buildings, lands, houses and establishments across the state.

The new system has been put in effect since April 27.

“The property tax would be calculated on capital value-based system for all the Municipal Corporations, Councils and local bodies,” an official from the Urban Development Department told PTI.

Japan to restart controversial n-reactor after 14 yrs

Tokyo, May 06: Japan plans to restart today its controversial fast-breeder nuclear reactor after operations were suspended for more than 14 years following a sodium leak and a fire.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency is scheduled to relaunch Monju, the nation’s only fast-breeder reactor, around 10:30 am (local time).

The facility was shut down in 1995, less than two years after Monju had started generating power, after a special thermometer broke, leaking high-temperature metallic sodium that reacted violently with oxygen.

The incident resulted in a fire, but caused no radiation leak.

Sensex tumbles further on weak global cues

Mumbai, May 06: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex fell further by over 88 points in opening trade today as foreign funds as well as investors continued to sell stocks amid a weakening global trend.

The 30-share index, which lost 49.18 points in the previous session, fell by 88.43 points, or 0.51 per cent to 16,999.53 points in the first five minutes of trading.

Likewise, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty declined by 32.65 points, or 0.63 per cent, to 5092.25 points.

Keep a tab on no-fly list, US tells airlines

Washington, May 06: With Pakistani-American Faisal Shahzad, who attempted to bomb the Times Square, almost giving authorities the slip despite being on the no-fly list, the US government has ordered airlines to check the list within two hours of receiving information that a high-priority name has been added.

Airlines are required to check the no-fly list for updates only every 24 hours. But a new rule announced Wednesday requires that airlines check within two hours of receiving notification that a high-priority name has been added to the list.

Swiss wants burqa ban

Geneva, May 06: Lawmakers in Switzerland’s northern canton (state) of Aargau have called for a nationwide ban on burqa-style Islamic garb in public spaces, Swiss newspapers reported on Wednesday.

Aargau’s Parliament voted to introduce a motion in Switzerland’s Council of States – representing the 26 cantons – that would forbid people from wearing the dress that covers women from head to toe with only a small mesh to see through.

Anna Hazare pays Rs 100 fine in court

Pune, May 06: Noted social worker and anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare was today fined Rs 100 by a court here for remaining absent on a hearing date in a case filed against him.

Hazare appeared in person in the court of Judicial Magistrate Rajesh Vanavdi at Shivajinagar today after being summoned by the judge who had noted his absence on March 15 during the hearing of a case.

The case was filed against Hazare in 2005 by one Hemant Patil accusing him of misappropriation of funds of a trust.
