23 persons killed, 161 hurt as tornado strikes China

Beijing, May 06: At least 23 people were killed and 161 injured today when a tornado struck China’s southwestern Chongqing Municipality, damaging houses and crops.

The tornado – followed by torrential rains, hail storms and high winds – hit Dianjiang and Liangping counties at around 2:00 am (2330 IST), state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

“At least 23 people died and 161 others were injured,” it said quoting local government officials.

Tiwari say no PATERNITY test

New Delhi, May 06: The notorious playboy of Indian politics and the grand old man N.D. Tiwari refused to go for paternity test and DNA test. He has also denied having had any physical relationship with the appellant’s mother.

Rohit Shekhar, the grandson of a former Union minister and son of Congress leader Ujjwala Sharma, had filed the paternity suit claiming he was Tiwari’s biological son.

Russian tanker freed from Somali pirates

Moscow, May 06: A Russian anti-ship cruiser has freed a Russian tanker hijacked by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden, an official from the maritime coalition forces said Thursday.

Officials decided to seize the tanker, Moscow University, as they knew the sailors on board had taken cover in a place inaccessible to the pirates.

None of the Russians was injured in the operation.

The tanker with 23 Russian crewmembers and 86,000 tonnes of oil was hijacked Wednesday when it was on its way to China. The captain was able to alert the Russian warship by phone and seek help.

Iran welcomes Brazil mediation over nuclear issue

Tehran, May 06: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has agreed “in principle” to a Brazilian role in breaking the deadlock over a U.N.-backed nuclear fuel swap with the West.

Under the U.N. plan first put forward in 2009, Western powers would send nuclear fuel rods to a Tehran reactor in exchange for Iran’s stock of lower-level enriched uranium. The U.S. and its allies fear Iran’s disputed nuclear program aims to build nuclear weapons, and view the swap as a way to curb Tehran’s capacity to do so.

Death or life term for Kasab? Court to decide today

Mumbai, May 06: Will it be death for Ajmal Kasab or a life term in prison? The decision will be out today.

The special 26/11 trial court in Mumbai heard the arguments on Tuesday and will announce the quantum of sentence today. While the prosecution wants death sentence for Kasab, his lawyer has appealed for leniency on the grounds that he’s just 22 years old.

Kasab is India’s costliest prisoner. Around 35 crore rupees have been spent to keep him in jail till now. If sentenced to death, Kasab will be the 52nd person on death row in India.

Myanmar police arrest man over Yangon blasts

Yangon, May 06: Myanmar police said Thursday they had arrested a man in connection with last month’s deadly blasts in a Yangon park, blaming the attack on a militant exile group opposed to the ruling junta.

“This brutal act was committed by four terrorist murderers who are members of a group known as the Vigorous Burmese Student Warriors,” Myanmar police chief Khin Yi said in a statement.

Several other suspects had fled back across the Thai border, police said.

Dhaka seeks Delhi’s help to nab Mujib killers

Dhaka, May 06: Bangladesh has sought New Delhi’s help to nab two of the six fugitive killers of its founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who was assassinated 35 years ago.

Home Minister Sahara Khatun, who made the request to Indian High Commissioner Rajeet Mitter, did not say when the fugitive killers visited India.

Mitter assured full cooperation, The Daily Star newspaper said Thursday.

“One or two killers visited India and we just want cooperation of the country to arrest and extradite them to Bangladesh,” the minister told the envoy here Wednesday.

NK involved in mysterious sinking of a SK warship

Seoul, May 06: Investigators have concluded that North Korea was probably involved in the mysterious sinking of a South Korean warship in March, a news report said Thursday.

An examination of the wreck of the Cheonan found traces of explosives from a torpedo, the Dong-A-Ilbo newspaper reported, citing a member of the investigation team.

The defence ministry in Seoul denied the report, saying that its investigations have not been concluded.

Kanishka bombing inquiry report to be released next month

Toronto, May 06: Six months after Kanishka bombings probe was completed, the inquiry commission is preparing to release its report next month ahead of the 25th anniversary of the worst mass murder in Canadian history.

The government has issued a notice seeking printers to publish the six volume containing 3,169 page English language report. The French version of the report has 3,869 pages. The notice requires a June 10 delivery date.

June 23 will mark the 25th anniversary of the bombing, which killed 329 people when the plane exploded off the coast of Ireland.

Israeli police injure 9 Palestinians

Gaza, May 06: Israeli police have attacked the Palestinian residents of Silwan, in occupied East Jerusalem al-Quds, injuring nine people.

Israeli police forces fired rubber bullets and tea gas canisters at the Palestinians, who were protesting against illegal settlements. One Palestinian was lightly injured after being hit by a military jeep.

The injured were treated at a local clinic, medical sources said, adding that they were treating rubber bullet wounds and respiratory problems resulting from tear gas.

Govt likely to give Rs14,000 crore to oil marketing firms

New Delhi, MAy 06: The government on Wednesday agreed to give an additional Rs14,000 crore to oil retailers Indian Oil Corp. Ltd, Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd and Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd to make up for most of the losses they incurred on selling cooking fuel below cost.

The three retailers lost Rs31,621 crore on selling domestic LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and kerosene below cost in 2009-10. Of this, the finance ministry had previously released Rs12,000 crore in cash and, on Wednesday, agreed to give an additional Rs14,000 crore.

Hizbul Islam attacks clinic in Somalia

Mogadishu, May 06: Hizbul Islam fighters have attacked a clinic in Somalia.

On Wednesday, Hizbul Islam fighters attacked the clinic, which is run by Doctors without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières, MSF) and located near Afgoye, about 20 kilometers south of Mogadishu.

One Hizbul Islam commander and one security guard working for the MSF clinic were killed, the Press TV correspondent in Mogadishu reported.

In addition, five of the clinic’s security guards were injured.

Maoists blast railway track in Bihar

Patna, May 06: Maoists blasted a railway track in Bihar Thursday during a 48-hour strike called by them after police foiled a Maoist-backed outfit’s public meeting.

Police sources said the track was blown up near Kurmi railway station in Muzaffarpur district, about 70 km from here, hitting train services.

The police had allegedly prevented members of the Mahangai Virodhi Morcha, a pro-Maoist group, from organising a public meeting against price rise April 30 in Muzaffarpur.

MPs hail Ahmadinejad’s nuclear stance

Tehran, May 06: Iranian MPs have signed a letter praising President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for his “strong stance” at the UN conference on nuclear disarmament.

197 members of the Majlis, which is Iran’s parliament, including some from the minority faction, presented the letter to the Majlis Presiding Board, the Fars news agency reported on Wednesday.

The lawmakers lauded Ahmadinejad’s speech at the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference, which is currently underway in New York.

US sleuths in Pakistan to grill prime suspect’s kin

Karachi, May 06: American investigators have arrived in Pakistan to question the two men picked up by law enforcement personnel late on Tuesday in connection with the botched bombing plot in New York’s Time Square.

Faisal Shahzad, an American of Pakistani origin, was arrested by US aurthorities on Monday and made the prime suspect in the abortive bid to detonate a car bomb outside a theatre.

Faisal’s friend Tauseef and father-in-law Iftikhar Mian were picked up from a house in the middle-class Nazimabad locality of Karachi after information from US officials.
