Naxals kill three people in every two days

New Delhi, May 30: While the focus remains on the recent spate of Maoist attacks, statistics show that Naxals have been killing three persons in every two days for the past five years.

The Left-wing extremists have killed about 2,670 people — about 1,680 civilians and nearly 990 security personnel — since 2005, equalling three deaths every two days.

CBSE yet to decide on report by Ruchika school

New Delhi, May 30: A report submitted by a Chandigarh school on expulsion of Ruchika Girhotra, who was molested by former Haryana DGP S P S Rathore, is under consideration of CBSE and no decision has been taken on it.

“The school has submitted the report about its action of expelling Ruchika. The report is being considered by a committee. No decision has been taken in this matter,” CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi said.

Sexually transmitted diseases on rise

Sydney, May 30: Experts have called for a new HIV awareness campaign after it was seen that venereal disease among young Australians has skyrocketed.

According to federal government figures, the number of chlamydia cases doubled to 60,000 over the four years to 2008, and people aged between 20 and 29 are the group at highest risk.

Professor Michael Kidd, who chaired a ministerial advisory group on sexual disease strategies, says the higher infection rates mean young people are ignoring the government’s safe-sex ad campaign.

British treasury secretary quits over expenses scandal

London, May 30: Just 17 days into his new office, Britain’s Chief Secretary to the Treasury David Laws has quit over claiming expenses to pay rent to his gay partner – plunging the new David Cameron-led coalition government into a crisis.

Laws is repaying 40,000 pounds expenses he claimed for rent he paid to long-term partner and landlord James Lundie.

He said he was resigning to try to limit damage to the new administration and added: “This was my decision and mine alone.”

Laws made the announcement on the steps of the Treasury just before 8 p.m. Saturday night.

Gibson wants batsmen to show ‘common sense’

Jamaica, May 30: A day after Ottis Gibson said he would like a batting coach to be part of his staff, West Indies proved they need the guidance of one by crashing to 157 all out in 38 overs in Dominica, surrendering the series 3-0 to South Africa with two ODIs to play. Gibson said the dismal performance was because the batsmen were neither taking responsibility nor playing with common sense.

30 killed, 28 injured in Karnataka bus mishap

Bangalore, May 30: At least 30 people, including 10 children, were killed and 28 others injured when a Bangalore-bound bus in which they were travelling overturned and caught fire near Challanakeri area in the district today.

The bus hit a barricade and turned turtle, police said adding, its diesel tank caught fire. The incident took place at around 2.15am.

The driver was among those killed.

Twenty-five of the injured have been admitted to Challanakeri hospital and three have been taken to a government hospital here.

Airtel, Sahara only two to bid for Indian team sponsorship

Bangalore, May 30: The BCCI – which had ended up with some egg on its face after being unable to find a sponsor for the Indian cricket team at the end of 2009 – fared marginally better in the fresh round with two players submitting bids. The bids were submitted by heavyweights Sahara and Bharti Airtel.

According to a report on Cricinfo, both parties bought the tender document at the last possible minute before the submission deadline and both have also submitted the mandatory Rs. 50 crore deposit required by the BCCI.

Sreesanth stripped of Kerala captaincy

Trivandrum, May 30: Pacer S Sreesanth was replaced as captain of Kerala for 2010-11 season by all-rounder Raiphi Vincent Gomez, though he was named in the list of probables.

Robert Fernandez will be vice-captain of the team, the Kerala Cricket Association said after announcing the list of probables for the senior side.

Another notable change was the absence of Tinu Yohanan, the first test cricketer from the state, from the 25-member list.

The probables were chosen by the selectors at a meeting held in Trivandrum, KCA said in a release.

Finn sparks Bangladesh collapse against England

Four of a family murdered in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, May 30: In a gruesome incident here, four members of a family were murdered by their son-in-law and his relatives early Sunday, police said.

Six assailants hacked to death four people in a house at Premnagar in Amberpet neighbourhood. Another person sustained serious injuries and is battling for life in hospital, police said.

Qamruddin, his wife Sajida Begum and two other family members Abdullah Begani and Abdullah Kirmani were killed in the attack. Qamruddin’s daughter Afreen, wife of the main accused, is in critical condition.

France to renew ties with Africa?

Paris, May 30: President Nicolas Sarkozy holds his first Africa summit this week hoping to convince the continents leaders that France is looking for a fresh start with Africa.

The French president will be hosting 38 African leaders from Cairo to Cape Town in the French city of Nice for a gathering dubbed a “summit of renewal” to restore France’s ties with the continent.

The 25th annual Africa-France summit which will be held on Monday and Tuesday covers agendas including peace and security, climate and development and Africa’s place on the world stage.

Israel rejects plea of 189 countries

Jerusalem, May 30: After the United Nations ratified a resolution calling for a nuclear weapons-free Middle East, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu moves to condemn the treaty.

The attack came after all 189 signatories to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) reached a deal on Friday for the establishment of a Middle East without nukes.

The 28-page statement by the NPT members — which was agreed upon following a month of wrangling — called on all Middle East nations to attend a conference on ridding the region of weapons of mass destruction due to be held in 2012.

Manish Malhotra to design Mumbai police’s new uniform

Mumbai, May 30: Designer Manish Malhotra, who is to craft a new uniform for the Mumbai police, is excited about the project but will not disclose any details, saying the project is in its early stages.

“Now it’s in a very early stage. We are working on it. It will take some time. Lots of approvals have to be taken. We all are very excited; it’s a very prestigious thing for me. The work is in progress. I can’t say anything more about it,” Manish said.

Asked to give some hint about the design and colour of the uniform, he said: “Nothing has been decided.”

Obama to attend Krishna reception to underscore India ties

Washington, May 30: It is rare for the US president to attend a reception for a visiting minister, But to counter a public perception that President Barack Obama is not as warm towards India as his predecessor George Bush was, the White House has made it known that he would attend a reception for visiting Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna.

Obama plans to drive down from the White House to the State Department at Foggy Bottom for the reception being hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton after chairing the inaugural India-US strategic dialogue with Krishna on June 3.

5 kids living in caves since birth rescued

Bogota, May 30: Five children who had lived since birth in caves dug by their father and who had no contact with the outside world were rescued by Colombian authorities, a media report said.

The youngsters, the eldest being 11 years old and the smallest eight months, were wearing plastic and recycled clothes May 14 when they were taken from the caves, located near the municipality of Turmeque in the northeastern province of Boyaca.

Russia restricts information availability to public

Moscow, May 30: Russia has restricted the availability of information on activities of the country’s judiciary to the common people.

The presidium of the country’s panel of judges has issued regulations under which courts will be guided as to when information on certain cases is published on the internet.

Under the new rules, information on cases involving state security, family law and limited legal capacity shall not be published on the internet.

Japan PM trying to mend govt. cracks

Tokyo, May 30: Japan’s embattled Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama says he wants to maintain the ruling coalition with the Social Democrats amid a row over the relocation of a US airbase.

On Friday, Hatoyama sacked Consumer Affairs Minister Mizuho Fukushima after she refused to endorse a deal with Washington to keep a US airbase on the southern Okinawa Island.

While Hatoyama’s Democratic Party is on the verge of internal dispute over the issue, Fukushima’s removal from her cabinet post further convinced her leftist Social Democratic Party (SDP) to leave the government.

Dalit killed for demanding wages

Bhopal, May 30: A Dalit in a Madhya Pradesh village only wanted payment of wages due to him — but what he got was death. Mason Ramesh Jatav was allegedly killed after he demanded Rs.4,000 for the work he had done for farmer Shriram Lodhi, police Sunday said.

Thirty-eight-year-old Jatav was killed in Shivpuri district Friday night when he had gone to Shriram’s house with his wife to demand back-wages.

According to police, Shriram and his relative Gabdu Lodhi took the couple to a nearby field and killed Jatav, a resident of Sirsona village, about 350 km from here.

Turkish PM cancels visit to Argentina

Ankara, May 30: Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has cancelled a planned visit to Argentina without giving any specific reason.

The prime minister’s office announced late on Saturday that Mr. Erdogan, on a three-nation tour, has cancelled his upcoming visit to Argentina and will, in due course, issue a written statement on the reason for the cancellation.

He was scheduled to travel to Argentina after a visit to Brazil in order to meet President Cristina Kirchner on Monday, the Anatolia news agency reported.
