Police file chargesheet against Bajrangi in MCOCA case

New Delhi, April 27: Delhi police today accused Munna Bajrangi, a Uttar Pradesh gangster, and others of running a crime syndicate to extort money from businessmen in a chargesheet filed in a Delhi court under tough anti-organised crime law MCOCA.

The Special Cell of Delhi police alleged Bajrangi used to target Uttar Pradesh businessmen dealing in coal and extorted money from them on a regular basis.

The chargesheet was filed in the court of Additional Sessions Judge Madhu Jain who put it for taking cognisance on May 15.

Shoaib, Sania ask media to respect their privacy

Lahore, April 27: Newly-wed star couple Shoaib Malik and Sania Mirza, hounded by fans and the media since their arrival in Pakistan last week, have appealed to journalists looking for “masala” to respect their privacy and lessen the hype about their marriage.

The Shoaib and Sania ShowIn an apparent bid to address the Pakistani media’s contention that the couple were not making any public appearances or speaking to journalists, Shoaib and Sania gave interviews to some TV news channels.

Lashkar active in neighbouring countries

New Delhi, April 27: Pakistan-based banned terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) is spreading its network in India’s neighbouring countries, including the Maldives, parliament was informed Tuesday.

“Available input indicates that the LeT is developing links in India’s neighbouring countries, including the Maldives,” Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Maken said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

G20 has brought more voices to table: Obama

Washington, April 27: US President Barack Obama has said G20 has now brought voices of more countries including India to the table which now play leading role on global economic decision-making process.

“At a government level, I would note that putting the G20 in the lead on global economic decision-making has brought more voices to the table — including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, India and Indonesia,” Obama said in his address to the “Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship”, which is being attended by some 250 successful entrepreneurs, most of whom are from the Muslim world.

MCD teachers demand Sixth Pay Commission arrears

New Delhi, April 27: Teachers of municipal schools in the capital held a demonstration at the MCD headquarters here today, protesting the non-payment of 60 per cent arrears under the Sixth Pay Commission.

The teachers, under the banner of Nagar Nigam Sikshak Sangh, a representative body of 25,000 MCD teachers, said the civic body is yet to pay the second instalment of the arrears, after 40 per cent was given three years back.

Arrest Lalit Modi: Shiv Sena

Mumbai, April 27: A senior Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra legislator Subhash Desai Tuesday demanded the arrest of suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) Commissioner Lalit Modi.

Desai also demanded that Modi should be made to undergo a narco-analysis test which would bring out the truth behind the controversy plaguing the IPL Twenty20 cricket tournament.

“We shall write to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking Modi’s arrest and a narco-analysis test on him to unearth all facts of financial irregularities in IPL,” Desai told reporters here Tuesday evening.

CBI seeks prosecution of Kumar in ’84 riots cases

New Delhi, April 27: CBI today sought prosecution of former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar and others for the killing four persons during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots here.

Arguing before Additional Sessions Judge Sunita Gupta, senior counsel R S Cheema alleged Kumar, a former outer Delhi MP, had incited a mob which killed the four persons near Delhi Cantonment.

Cheema, appearing for CBI, also sought framing of charges against Kumar for being involved in sedition saying he had incited one group of people against another.

Court grants regular bail to Chautala

New Delhi, April 27: A Delhi court today granted regular bail to Ajay Chautala, a Harayan MLA and son of former Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, in a disproportionate assets case.

Special CBI Judge P S Teji allowed the application of Chautala, who was on interim bail, for regular bail on furnishing a personal and a surety of Rs one lakh each.

The court also granted regular bail to co-accused Chetram, Om Prakash, Abhimanyu Singh, Rajender Kumar and Netram.

LS passes demands of various ministries

New Delhi, April 27: Lok Sabha today passed the demands for grants of various ministries to the tune of Rs 46,61,038 crore without any discussion.

The House also passed the Appropriation Bill by a voice vote authorising government to take out money from the Consolidated Fund of India for expenditure during the current financial year.

The demands for grants of only three Ministries — Rural Development, Tribal Affairs and Water Resources — were discussed by the House during the past few days.

RoC issues notices to Shahrukh and his wife Gauri

New Delhi, April 27: Actor Shahrukh Khan and his wife Gauri, who promote IPL franchise ‘Kolkata Kinght Riders’, and Jaipur IPL Cricket that promotes ‘Rajasthan Royals’ have been issued show-cause notices for alleged violation of the Companies Act.

“After expiry of notice period, criminal proceedings will be filed against the companies and the directors,” the Registrar of Companies (RoC), Mumbai, informed the Ministry of Company Affairs.

The notices were issued to the companies and their promoters, directors for not filing mandatory yearly returns.

Delhi govt to identify unrecognised schools

New Delhi, April 27: With the Right to Education Act stipulating that no school can operate without recognition, Delhi Government has started a process of identifying such unrecognised educational institutions functioning in the city.

The education department of the city government has already directed civic agencies MCD and NDMC to identify such schools in their areas within next seven days.

“Notices will be issued to such schools to apply for recognition and if they fail to get the recognition within a stipulated time-frame then they will be shut down,” said an official.

Teacher arrested for rape of girl student

Chandigarh, April 27: A government school teacher was today arrested for allegedly raping a girl student in Sirsa district, nearly 215 kms from here, police said.

The accused Anil was teaching Hindi at Government Senior Secondary School in Shahpur Begu village and he was arrested based on a complaint filed by the girl’s father that he had raped his daughter on April 24, they said.

Four of family killed in road accident

Jind (Haryana), April 27: Four members of a family were killed and one was injured in a head-on collision between their car and an oil tanker on the Hisar-Chandigarh road here today.

The dead were Satnarain, aged 50, Poonam (26), Monica (23) and Pari (2), police said adding the collision occurred near Jajanwala village.

A four-year-old child was injured in the accident, they said.

The victims hailed from Narwana city’s Model Town area, police said.

The driver of tanker fled after the accident.

Cut motions defeated in LS, huge division in Opposition

New Delhi, April 27: The much-hyped trial of strength for the government in the Lok Sabha today proved to be a dampener with the House defeating the cut motion on petroleum prices by a big margin exposing huge divisions in the Opposition.

The cut motion moved by CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta on failure to formulate proper policies on petroleum products was defeated by a margin of 88 votes when it received the support of 201 votes with 289 voting against it in a House of 543.

IBA, bank unions sign agreement on pay revision

Mumbai, April 27: Bank employees in 26 public and 12 private sector institutions will see their salaries increase by 17.5 per cent, with the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and bank unions today signing an agreement on pay revision.

The agreement also gives an opportunity to those who had not opted for the pension scheme in 1995 to join the scheme again.

Govt using CBI to rope in support on Finance Bill: JD(U) chief

New Delhi, April 27: With BSP throwing its weight behind UPA on the cut motion against the Finance Bill, JD(U) on Tuesday accused the government of misusing CBI to rope in parties in its favour on the issue and also sought an explanation from SP and RJD for “singing a different tune”.

“People ask me about the lack of unity between various opposition parties, which was very much intact during the budget. It was my initiative to bring along SP and RJD and other parties to unite against rising sugar prices during the budget presentation.

Cong declares virtual ceasefire with Mayawati

New Delhi: With BSP bolstering the government ahead of voting on opposition-sponsored cut motion in Lok Sabha, Congress on Tuesday virtually declared a ceasefire against the Mayawati-led party it had once described as ‘enemy No one’ in UP.

“In order to keep communal forces at bay, support is available to the government. We are confident of defeating the cut motion,” party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said, sidestepping questions whether the party still considered the BSP as enemy No one in UP.

Rejected, he kills her

New Delhi, April 27: Varun Mehta, 26, had met Deepshikha Arora’s parents last week to ask for her hand in marriage but the schoolteacher reportedly refused to marry him since “she treated him only as a friend”, an officer said.

This, the police suspect, led Mehta to kill her.

It was, however, a one-sided ‘love’ affair, the police said. “When we contacted the woman’s family, they clearly said Deepshikha Arora was not in love with anyone,” an officer said.

Lok Satta advocates direct elections to curb money power

Hyderabad, April 27: Claiming that the Election Commission of India had miserably failed in curbing money power in elections, the Lok Satta Party today suggested that direct election of heads of Government at the State and local levels and a switch over to proportional representation for election of all MLAs and MPs would help prevent misuse of money power.

DMK Govt failed to up power generation: Jaya

Chennai, April 27: AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today accused the DMK Government of failing to enhance the power generation to 10,760 MW even four years after it came to power in 2006.

In a statement here, she said the DMK Government, in its first budget for 2006-07, promised to enhance power generation to 10,760 MW by the end of the year 2006. But as on date, it stood at 7,300 MW.
