Yemen arrests al Qaeda suspects

Sanaa, April 28: Yemeni police arrested dozens of al Qaeda suspects in sweeps a day after a suicide bomber tried to kill Britain’s ambassador to Yemen, security officials said on Tuesday.

At the 22-year-old bomber’s home near Sanaa, his father told Reuters that he condemned his son’s actions and that he had tried to get him to marry and find a job, before the young man went missing around six weeks ago.

Cut motion on Ministry of Petroleum negated in Lok Sabha

Lucknow, April 28: The UPA government has defeated the cut motion by a massive margin on Tuesday as 246 MPs voted against the cut motion and 162 voted in favour with SP and RJD MPs abstaining from voting.

The opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Left parties moved cut motions in the Lok Sabha against the Budget proposals to hike prices of fuels and fertilisers but the treasury was confident of passing the test of strength rather easily.

100% concession for cancer patients in 3-AC, sleeper coaches

New Delhi, April 28: The Railway Ministry on tuesday said cancer patients can now avail 100 per cent concession in third-AC and sleeper class coaches.

The concession for cancer patients has been enhanced from existing 75 per cent to 100 per cent, Railway officials said.

“The concession for escorts (of cancer patients) in 3-AC and sleeper coaches remains unchanged at 75 per cent. The change has become effective from April 20, 2010,” they said.

The capital was relatively calm overnight and the number of demonstrators at the ‘red shirt’ rally in an upmarket shopping district of the capital was little more than 1,000 at dawn, a Reuters photographer said.

Goldman traders get grilled and its stock jumps

New York, April 28: Goldman Sachs executives emerged mostly unscathed from a Senate grilling. The company’s stock did even better.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. outperformed most other stocks Tuesday as a Senate subcommittee questioned Goldman employees about complex mortgage deals that led to government civil fraud charges. The stocks rose as much as $4.16 before pulling back to close at $153.04, up $1.01, or 0.7 percent. Still, it was the only major banking stock to end higher amid a market plunge.

A.P. may enter national pool for medical seats

Hyderabad, April 28: The State government is contemplating to revise its long-standing policy of keeping its medical seats out of the national pool.

Chief Minister K. Rosaiah has decided to convene an all-party meeting soon for consultations whether the State should join the national pool wherein MBBS/ PG seats will be shared among the States on a reciprocal basis. Andhra Pradesh had opted out of the national pool when NTR was Chief Minister, but over the years, the government realised that this policy was preventing students from competing for the large number of seats in other States.

Sensex tanks 229 points in early trade on weak global cues

Mumbai, April 28: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex fell over 229 points in early trade today on weak global cues as investors worldwide feared about the eurozone’s economic stability.

The 30-share index, which had lost over 54 points in the previous sessions, fell further by 229.27 points, or 1.29 per cent to 17,461.35.

All the sectoral indices, led by metal, realty, consumer durable and oil and gas, were trading in the negative zone, with losses up to 1.81 per cent.

Rome priest on trial for abuse defends Pope

Rome, April 28: A politically connected priest on trial for allegedly sexually molesting young boys proclaimed his innocence and denounced what he said was “mud” being thrown on the Pope concerning the clerical abuse scandal.

The Rev Ruggero Conti made a spontaneous declaration during a court hearing in Rome. He is accused of sexual violence and prostitution concerning seven young boys who frequented his parish in a working class neighbourhood of Rome.

Gandhinagar, April 28: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi today said a database containing voice samples of criminals and terrorists needs to be created to combat the worldwide menace of terrorism.

“The biggest problem the world is facing today is terrorism,” Modi said while inaugurating a conference ‘to promote the use of DNA, DVI (disaster victim identification), and fingerprints’ organised by Interpol for the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) at the Gujarat Forensic Science University.

Starting with Pakistan, India begins tuning online visa process

New Delhi, April 28: A Pakistani national could go to the website of India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, fill the online visa form, click submit, show the relevant documents to the local mission and get the visa.

That’s the idea at least – it has been applicable since April 1 – but not a single visa has been issued through this method yet.

The ministry had a very low profile launch, with no accompanying publicity – not surprisingly as several chinks have to be smoothened out before this becomes the preferred method of application for visa.

Left-TDP’s bandh affects normal life in AP

Hyderabad, April 28: The bandh called by Telugu Desam and Left parties against the government’s failure to check price rise badly affected normal life in Andhra Pradesh.

Leaders and activists of the opposition parties held demonstrations in towns and villages across the State and also staged sit-in in front of depots of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC).

Passengers had a tough time as APSRTC suspended its services in cities including Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and also in several other districts.

Pallam Raju’s aunt found murdered in Hyderabad

Hyderaad, April 28: An elderly woman, related to Minister of State for Defence M Pallam Raju, was found murdered in her plush apartment at Punjagutta today. The investigators suspect it to be a case of murder for gain as some property including gold ornaments went missing.

The victim, 75-year-old Susheela Devi, a widow, was staying alone in flat No 103 at Lotus Properties Limited (apartments) opposite Jalagam Vengal Rao park.

Indian origin doctor killed by stalker

Yale, April 28: Vajinder Toor, a 34 year old Indian origin doctor teaching at Yale University is gunned down in the parking lot outside his condominium in this New Haven suburb.

According to Branford Police spokesman Lt. Geoffrey Morgan, Toor was shot multiple times. Even, the shooter also fired at Dr. Toor’s six-months-pregnant wife, but missed.

Shortly after the incident, the police arrested Lishan Wang, a 44-year-old Chinese emigre, about a mile from the scene as he drove toward I-95.

PM left for Bhutan to attend the SAARC Summit

New Delhi, April 28: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday left for Bhutan to attend the SAARC Summit during which he may meet his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Singh, during his two-day stay, is also expected to hold interactions with leaders from other member countries.

BSE Sensex to open lower; Bharti Airtel eyed

Mumbai, April 28: The BSE Sensex is set to open lower on Wednesday, mirroring the steep losses in world equities after downgrades of Greece and Portugal’s credit ratings curbed risk appetite of global investors.

Top mobile operator Bharti Airtel is likely to unveil March quarter earnings before the market opens. A Reuters poll showed Bharti may report a quarterly net profit of 20.78 billion rupees, a 7.2 percent fall from a year ago as tariff war hit the sector.

With this, the hope of a grand alliance of all Opposition parties against the government’s economic policies, especially those resulting in price rise, suffered a setback when the political Right and the Left together registered a total of 201 votes for their cut motions against 289 by the government.

New Delhi, April 28: Though Urdu is spoken all over the country, the Capital has some of the best Urdu speakers, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said here on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Delhi University’s Department of Urdu, Ms. Dikshit said the State Government was making efforts to develop Urdu and the language was also one of the official languages of the Government, she added.

Official protocal provided to Musharraf

Islamabad, April 28: The government has decided not to withdraw the official protocol being provided to former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf.

“Being a former president it is his right to get official security and protocol,” Interior Minister Rehman Malik told a private TV channel on Monday.

There have been speculations that after the UN commission report blamed the Musharraf regime for the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the government will withdraw his protocol.

4000 children kills daily with unclean water

Surabaya, April 28: More than 4,000 children die every day across the globe due to lack of sanitation and access to clean water, the World Bank said here Tuesday.The bank’s communication officer Chrishtopher M. Walsh said most of the deaths occurred in the developing world, Xinhua reported.

“About 4,000 children die every day due to lack of access to clean water and sanitation. Most of them are in the developing countries in Africa, East Asia, South Asia and Latin America,” he said at a workshop on Evidence-Based Advocacy for Millennium Development Goals organised by the bank.
