S.Korea hails Himalaya climber amid controversy

Seoul, April 28: South Korean media hailed one of the country’s climbers on Wednesday after she claimed to have become the first woman to scale the world’s 14 highest peaks, ignoring controversy surrounding her bid.

All major newspapers ran a front page photo of Oh Eun-Sun holding a national flag at the snow-covered summit of the 8,091-metre (26,545-foot) Annapurna in Nepal.

Oh’s claim to be the first female climber to have conquered all the world’s mountains over 8,000 metres is under scrutiny, however.

JMM says voting in cut motions in LS a mistake

New Delhi, April 28: In a damage control exercise after BJP’s ally JMM supported the government in the cut motions in Lok Sabha, its MP Hemant Soren today claimed that it happened by “mistake” and made it clear there was no move to form a government in Jharkhand with Congress backing.

“It has happened by mistake. It is a human error which happens due to confusion during voting. We met BJP President Nitin Gadkari last night and explained to him the real position,” Hemant, Rajya Sabha MP and son of Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren told PTI.

US, Israel renew Hezbollah arms claims

Washington, April 28: Israel and the US repeat their claims about the enormity of arsenals owned by Hezbollah and Syria’s alleged arms transfer to the Lebanese resistance movement.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his Israeli counterpart Ehud Barak in Washington on Tuesday, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates claimed Hezbollah currently wields “more missiles than most governments in the world.”

He renewed Washington’s accusations against Iran and Syria of providing the Lebanese movement with military aid.

Doctor who killed 8 kids executed in China

Beijing, April 28: A mentally-unstable doctor who stabbed eight schoolchildren to death was executed Wednesday in China’s Fujian province, a media report said.

Zheng Minsheng, 41, who murdered the eight children March 23 at the gate of the Nanping Experimental Elementary School, had admitted in court that he “intentionally” killed them.

He was put in front of the firing squad Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

Zheng had asked the court April 8 to pay more attention to what prompted him to commit the crime, rather than to the crime itself.

Korean Is First Woman to Scale 14 Highest Peaks

SEOUL, April 28: Climbing on all fours after 13 grueling hours, a diminutive South Korean woman, Oh Eun-sun, reached the summit of one of the Himalayan giants on Tuesday to lay claim to being the first woman to scale the world’s 14 highest mountains.

In keeping with her country’s intense pride in its athletes, she pulled out a South Korean flag, raised her arms and shouted: “Hurray! Hurray!”

“I would like to share this joy with the South Korean people,” Oh, who is 5 feet 1 inch, said after reaching the summit of Annapurna in central Nepal.

14 Somali civilians killed in battle

Somalia, April 28: At least 14 civilians were killed Tuesday during a prolonged battle between government soldiers and Islamic insurgents that followed a separate suicide car bomb attack in Somalia’s capital, officials and a witness said.

Four people were wounded, including two African Union troops, in the suicide attack outside an AU base earlier Tuesday.

After the attack, Islamic insurgents attacked government soldiers and Islamic militiamen allied to the government as they moved between bases in southern Mogadishu.

‘Israel must sign the NPT’

Cairo, April 28: Egypt has declared that turning the Middle East into a nuclear weapons-free zone is the key to solving the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program and said Israel must sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

“Success in dealing with Iran will depend to a large extent on how successfully we deal with the establishment of a nuclear-free zone” in the Middle East, Egypt’s Ambassador to the UN, Maged Abdel Aziz, told a luncheon briefing with reporters in New York on Tuesday.

Iran FM flies to Bhutan SAARC Summit

Tehran, April 28: Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki left Tehran on Wednesday morning to attend the 16th SAARC Summit in the Bhutanese capital Thimphu.

Mottaki is expected to hold talks with his counterparts on the sidelines of the two-day international gathering, according to the Foreign Ministry.

SC says accept illiterate rape victim’s statement

New Delhi, April 28: The supreme Court has said statements of rape victims who are illiterate and uneducated have to be accepted in full even if there is no corroborative evidence.

“ In a case of rape, particularly, ( if) the victims are illiterate, uneducated, their statements have to be accepted in toto without further corroboration,” Justice P. Sadhasivam said in a judgment.

Netanyahu to meet Mubarak on Monday

Jerusalem, April 28: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Egypt next Monday to discuss a resumption of Middle East peace talks, a top Israeli official told AFP.

The two leaders “agreed during a telephone conversation last night (Monday) to meet next Monday in Sharm el-Sheikh,” the Red Sea resort where Mubarak is convalescing after surgery last month.

“The two will discuss all sorts of matters, especially the resumption of peace talks with the Palestinians,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

Cut the warmongering tone, Egypt says

Cairo, April 28: Egypt has urged the US to prevent another Israeli war on Lebanon, warning about the consequences of any military action.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit has underlined the importance of the role that the United States should play to avoid hostilities, Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Husam Zaki said on Tuesday.

In a message to his US counterpart Hillary Clinton, Aboul Gheit added that Lebanon would have to pay dearly for such a war of aggression launched by the Israelis, the Lebanese portal Naharnet reported.

UNSC appeals to all nations to outlaw piracy

United Nations, April 28: The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution that seeks the creation of a special body to prosecute pirates caught off the Somali coast and asks all countries to criminalise piracy.

66 warehouses warned for flouting rules

Abu Dhabi, April 28: The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City served warnings to 66 warehouses, during a general inspection campaign in the Al Mina Area.

They were found to be violating the safety standards norms and building rules prevailing in Abu Dhabi emirate.

The campaign, which is run by the Municipality in coordination with Abu Dhabi Ports Company, Ministry of Labour, General Directorate of Civil Defence and Community Police, targets about 450 warehouses as part of a comprehensive and sustained inspection and surveillance programme.

Germany gets first female Muslim minister

Berlin, April 28: The state parliament of Lower Saxony has sworn in Ayguel Oezkan as minister of social affairs for the northern state, making her the first female Muslim minister in Germany.

The 38-year-old, who is a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), was born in Hamburg to Turkish immigrants.

She was the party’s economic policy spokeswoman for the regional parliamentary group in Hamburg before being appointed as the first Muslim woman in Germany to be elected to a ministerial post on the state level, Deutsche Welle reported.

Police detain Delhi couple for Maoist links

New Delhi, April 28: The Delhi Police special cell has detained a trade union leader and his wife for their suspected links with the Maoists in the Capital.

The couple identified as Gopal Mishra and his wife Anu were reportedly in police custody till late on Tuesday with the police not confirming whether they were likely to be arrested.

Police sources said Mishra and his wife came under scanner for allegedly trying to infiltrate various trade unions in the Capital.

US unlikely to openly criticise Sino-Pak nuke trade: report

Washington, April 28: China is all set to export two nuclear power plants to Pakistan in violation of the guidelines of the Nuclear Suppliers Group that require NPT signatory states to supply such equipment only with comprehensive IAEA safeguards, a US think tank said Wednesday.

But the Obama Administration is unlikely to openly criticise such a deal, given its overwhelming dependence on Islamabad for its Afghan operations even though it might object to it inside the NSG, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said in its report released on Wednesday.

Israel wants action on Iran soon

Washington, April 28: Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak says the world cannot afford to wait too long to see if Iran halts its nuclear program.

At a press conference with US Defense Secretary Robert Gates in Washington on Tuesday, Barak said Israel supports the United States’ efforts to impose tougher economic sanctions on Tehran.

But only time will tell if sanctions have an impact on Iran’s nuclear stance, he added.

177 houses for poor families in RAK

Ras Al Khaimah, April 28: As many as 177 new houses will be built for poor Emirati families and youths in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) bringing the total number of UAE nationals who have received housing grants to 271 since February this year, Sultan bin Ali-Abu Lailah, Director of the Lands Department in RAK said.

Abu Lailah said the Lands Department in coordination with RAK Municipality have completed the necessary procedures for the grants including the allocation of plots and that construction would begin shortly.

Bomb scare diverts Delta flight

Paris, April 28: A Delta Airlines flight en route from French capital Paris to the US city of Atlanta has been diverted to Maine after a passenger claimed he had explosives and made threats to detonate them.

The passenger, identified as Derek Stansberry of Apollo, Florida, was subdued by US air marshals on Tuesday before being taken into custody upon landing.

Suntanned women face arrest in Iran

London, April 28: Suntanned women and girls who are like “walking mannequins” will be arrested in Iran, Tehran’s police chief has warned.

The warning comes close on the heels of a hardline Iranian cleric claiming that immodestly dressed women disturbed young men and caused earthquakes.

“The public expects us to act firmly and swiftly if we see any social misbehaviour by women, and men, who defy our Islamic values. In some areas of north Tehran we can see many suntanned women and young girls who look like walking mannequins.

Israeli warships fire on Gazan boats

Jerusalem, April 28: Israeli navy warships have once again opened fire on Palestinian fishermen along the shore of the Gaza Strip, inflicting damage on their boats.

The Tuesday fire drove the Gazan fishermen away though they had stayed close to the coastline, the International Middle East Media Center reported.

The fire caused no casualties, it added.

Heritage music workshop, concerts in Al Ain

Abu Dhabi, April 28: As part of its cultural programme, the Al Ain Centre for Music in the World of Islam, which was established less than a year ago by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), is hosting a workshop held by Dr Nidaa Abu Murad, violinist, distinguished researcher and music academic.

The artist, best known for his support of heritage and culture, will hold his workshop on Thursday at Emirates University in Al Ain.

It will be followed by two concerts, one on Friday night at Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain, the other on Saturday evening at the Abu Dhabi Theatre.
