Thimphu, April 28: Heads of eight South Asian countries, including Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, will on Wednesday seek a joint initiative to tackle climate change threats and also boost trade and regional cooperation among SAARC nations that more often than not do not see eye to eye with each other on most issues.

As the 16th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) conference gets under way in this serene and pollution-free capital city of Bhutan the summit’s key theme “Towards a Green and Happy South Asia” seems only apt.

Brazil demands Iran guarantee nuclear work is non-military

NRI doctor killed by stalker in US

Yale, April 28: Vajinder Toor, a 34 year old Indian origin doctor teaching at Yale University is gunned down in the parking lot outside his condominium in this New Haven suburb.

According to Branford Police spokesman Lt. Geoffrey Morgan, Toor was shot multiple times. Even, the shooter also fired at Dr. Toor’s six-months-pregnant wife, but missed.

Shortly after the incident, the police arrested Lishan Wang, a 44-year-old Chinese emigre, about a mile from the scene as he drove toward I-95.

NYC student pleads guilty to terrorism charge

Jawan kills 2 colleagues

Imphal, April 28: A soldier of 12 Madras Regiment allegedly shot two of his colleagues in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, 66 km south re, late on Tuesday.

The two junior commissioned officers were identified as Subedar Mrityunjaya of Tamil Nadu and Subedar Thanapa of Kerala. The accused rifleman Narayanan tried to flee, but was caught by his colleagues and handed over to the police.

“The army has ordered a high-level inquiry and disciplinary action will be taken against the soldier,” army sources told.

UNSC appeals to all nations to outlaw piracy

United Nations, April 28: The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution that seeks the creation of a special body to prosecute pirates caught off the Somali coast and asks all countries to criminalise piracy.

The Russian-drafted resolution, which passed unanimously by all 15 member-states of the Security Council, appealed to all countries “to criminalise piracy under their domestic law and favourably consider the prosecution of suspected, and imprisonment of convicted, pirates apprehended off the coast of Somalia, consistent with applicable international human rights law.”

Malcolm X assassin walks free after 4 decades

New York, April 28: The killer of African-American rights activist Malcolm X was freed today after more than four decades in the prison system, an official said.

“He was released today. His release was approved,” said Linda Foglia, spokeswoman, at the New York state department of correctional services.

Thomas Hagan, who confessed to the 1965 shooting of Malcolm X, had been partially free on work release for the last 22 years, although he was still required to spend two nights a week at a low-security Manhattan prison.

US man cites explosives, jet diverts to Maine

Augusta, April 28: An American citizen on a flight from Paris to Atlanta claimed to have a fake passport and said he had explosives in his luggage, forcing federal air marshals to intervene and the plane to land in Maine, US officials have said.

The officials, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, believe the man’s passport is authentic.

Don’t destroy documents till disclosure is decided: CIC

New Delhi, April 28: The CIC has directed the Central Vigilance Commission not to destroy documents, whose disclosure is yet to be decided by it, even if there is a policy of disposing them of after a specified period.

Chief Information Commissioner Wajahat Habibullah said during a hearing that the documents sought by RTI applicants should not be destroyed till a decision is made on their disclosure.

Indian doc shot dead by Chinese colleague

Chicago, April 28: An Indian-origin doctor at the Yale School of Medicine was shot dead by a Chinese colleague, who also tried to kill victim’s pregnant wife, police said.

Vajinder Toor (34) was shot multiple times in the parking lot outside his condominium in the New Haven suburb on Tuesday, according to Branford police spokesman Lt Geoffrey Morgan.

The police has charged Toor’s former colleague Dr Lishan Wang in the killing. Wang was a former colleague of Dr Toor s at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn.

‘India to get direct access to Headley soon’

Washington, April 28: India seems to be close to getting direct access to Pakistani American terror suspect David Coleman Headley, key plotter in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, with US agreeing to take “suitable steps” to bring it about.

Modalities were discussed at a meeting on Tuesday between India’s Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium and US Attorney General Eric Holder. Indian Ambassador Meera Shankar and other US Justice Department officials joined the talks.

SAARC: PM in Bhutan; may meet Gilani

New Delhi, April 28: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday reached Bhutan to attend the SAARC Summit during which he may meet his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Singh, during his two-day stay, is also expected to hold interactions with leaders from other member countries.

“The winds of change are blowing across the world. South Asia cannot be immune to the trend of greater integration, both at the regional and global levels,” the Prime Minister had said last night.

Woman survives after 2,700 shots fired at her

Mexico City, April 28: More than 2,700 bullets were fired at a Mexican official in a failed attempt on her life, an official has said.

Public safety secretary Minerva Bautista Gomez, who was wounded in the attack in the western state of Michoacan, “is now stable and she’ll leave the hospital very soon”, the official said Tuesday.

The secretary was attacked on Saturday on a Michoacan highway that had been blocked with a trailer by the hit men.

Two of her bodyguards and two civilians were killed in the attack, while Bautista and nine others were wounded.

Starting with Pak, India begins tuning online visa process

New Delhi, April 28: A Pakistani national could go to the website of India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, fill the online visa form, click submit, show the relevant documents to the local mission and get the visa.

That’s the idea at least – it has been applicable since April 1 – but not a single visa has been issued through this method yet.

The ministry had a very low profile launch, with no accompanying publicity – not surprisingly as several chinks have to be smoothened out before this becomes the preferred method of application for visa.

Pre-marital sex: SC quashes 22 cases against Khushboo

New Delhi, April 28: In a big relief for Tamil actress Khushboo, the Supreme Court on Wednesday quashed 22 cases filed against her in connection with her controversial remarks on pre-marital sex.

The cases were filed by various groups after Khushboo said in an interview to a Tamil magazine in 2005 that there was nothing wrong in pre-marital sex if it was consensual.

The remarks had attracted lot of criticism and the Tamil actor had to fight a long legal battle.

She had approached the Supreme Court in 2008.

Hyderabad, April 28: Union Minister of State for Defence M M Pallamraju’s aunty Susheela Devi (75) was allegedly murdered at her Banjarahills residence today.

According to police, some of Susheela Devi’s gold ornaments were missing from the body.
