Mumbai, April 01: Bipasha Basu gets to do 9 different looks in her new film Pankh. She clarifies, “It’s not nine roles as has been wrongly reported. It’s just nine looks.

I play a character who doesn’t really exist. I’m the young hero Maradona Rebello’s fantasy figure. Every look is a reflection on his mood. When he’s mellow I come out looking like an angel. He sees me the way he wants to see me. I loved the script and the director Sudipto Chattopadhyaya’s passion.”

The director wanted to name the character Bipasha Basu.

Miley Cyrus stole chickens

London, April 01: Singer Miley Cyrus has confessed that she used to steal chickens from a farm in California. “They were gonna take the chickens and feed them to the snakes at the end of the night and my dad was like, ‘Put one in your pocket Miley, and we’ll get out of here’.

So we, like, shoved them in our pockets and then we’d take them home to my mom. We were staying at, like, the Four Seasons or something, so we had to put them in the bathtub,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted her as saying.

Maoists attack mobile tower in Jajpur

Jajpur (Orissa), April 01: A day after Orissa police claimed presence of Maoists in Bisthapan Virodhi Jana Manch (BVJM), which opposed displacement of tribals due to industrialisation in Kalinga Nagar in the district, the rebels set ablaze a mobile tower in the area today.

The mobile tower of a private service provider was partially damaged but remained functional, Inspector In-Charge of Kalinga Nagar police station K C Mund said.

Arthur, 41, takes charge after Tom Moody did not seek re-appointment to the position.

Arthur resigned in January after five years as South Africa’s national team coach following the Proteas’ failure to beat England in a home Test series.

Elections to TTAADC to be held on May 3

Agartala, April 01: Elections to the 30-member Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) will be held on May 3.

The formal notification for the elections will be made on April 5, TTAADC’s Election Commissioner Y P Singh today said, adding about 6,36,169 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise.

The last date for filing of nominations was April 12, Singh said and added that scrutiny of nominations will be held on April 13 while the last date of withdrawal of nomination is April 16.

Malaysian sultan commutes caning sentence against Muslim woman

Kuala Lumpur, April 01: A Muslim woman who was sentenced to be caned for drinking beer has instead been ordered to perform community service after a state sultan decided to commute the sentence, her father said Thursday.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 33, was found guilty of drinking beer at a club two years ago. In September, the Islamic sharia court of appeals in her home state of Pahang upheld her sentence of a 5,000-ringgit (1,351-dollar) fine and six strokes of the cane.

Sachin’s Ferrari disappears from garage

Mumbai, April 01: Sachin Tendulkar’s famous Ferrari was stolen from his building La Mer at Bandra last night. In the city’s most sensational car heist, the fancy car has vanished from the building’s open garage.

The theft was discovered at 11.40 pm, by a building watchman. He then informed the family about it.

According to the Bandra police station Inspector Abdul Narayan D’Souza, Sachin has filed a complaint.

“We are investigating,” D’Souza said, though he would not divulge details and added, “It is too premature to elaborate.”

Hyderabad violence result of petty skirmishes: Chidambaram

New Delhi, April 01: Home Minister P Chidambaram said the riots in Hyderabad are a result of petty skirmishes and asserted that all those behind the violence would have to pay a heavy price .

He has appealed to the people of Hyderabad to maintain calm. The Home Minister said yesterday that the city remained peaceful but the curfew will remain imposed as long as it is necessary.

He expressed confidence that the situation will be brought under control soon.

Food inflation rises to 16.35 pc

New Delhi, April 01: Food inflation rose marginally to 16.35 per cent for the week ended March 20 mainly on account of high prices of pulses and milk.

The inflation stood at four-month low of 16.22 per cent for the week ended March 13.

The rise in food prices is mainly driven by pulses, which became dearer by 31.55 per cent. Milk prices rose by 18.74 per cent on the yearly basis.

Teachers asked to give undertaking on education act rules

Bhopal, April 01: With the Right to Education Act formally coming into effect Thursday, government school teachers in Madhya Pradesh have been asked to give an undertaking that they will follow the rules prescribed by the act, which includes not giving private tuitions, sources in the education department said.

The State School Education Ministry that has issued a circular in this regard has asked government primary and middle school heads to take an undertaking in triplicate from teachers ensuring, among other things, that they would not engage in coaching or giving private tuitions.

East al-Quds only open to ‘non-Palestinian’ Christians

Jerusalem, April 01: Only non-Palestinian Christians will be allowed to enter the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in East Jerusalem (al-Quds) on Saturday, when eastern Orthodox Christians celebrate “Saturday of Light.”

Israeli security officials informed church officials that only international pilgrims would be allowed to access the Old City and the church located in the site.

Saturday of Light is held the day before Easter with Christians lining in the streets of the Old City and holding bunches of candles in anticipation of the miracle fire.

8 US right-wing extremists plead ‘not guilty’

Washington, April 01: Eight Americans who have been accused of conspiring to kill law enforcement officers have pleaded not guilty to murder charges in a federal court.

The defendants’ attorneys said on Wednesday that there were many allegations with no substantial evidence to back them.

Lawyers also sought to block government efforts to have the defendants detained for the duration of the proceedings. One of them is accused of planning to seize up to four rural counties in southeast Michigan.

Attorneys claimed they are only exercising their rights to freely voice their anger.

Urgent need to tackle child abuse: experts

Dubai, April 01: There is an urgent need to tackle child abuse, still considered taboo in society, and educate adults on how to protect vulnerable children, experts have said.

The “Protect Childhood Campaign,” launched by Dubai Foundation for Women and Children (DFWAC) Wednesday featured experts who discussed the importance of protecting the youngest members of the society from abuse.

The campaign will run throughout April, which has been designated as “sexual assault and child abuse awareness” month, WAM news agency reported.

New Delhi, April 01: Rahul Bose has commercial hits like “Jhankaar Beats” and “Pyar Ke Side Effects” to his credit, but the immensely talented actor prefers offbeat films because he feels he doesn’t have the sex appeal to be a mainstream actor.

“I am seen less in out and out commercial films because my preference has always been world cinema. Whether it is ‘Split Wide Open’ or ‘English, August’, my inclination has been offbeat cinema,” Rahul, 42, told IANS in an interview.
