Husband convicted for dowry death

Muzaffarnagar, April 02: A local court here today sentenced a man to ten years rigorous imprisonment for murdering his wife over dowry demand.

The Additional District Judge S K Banerji also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Pravesh after holding him guilty.

According to prosecution, Babli was strangulated to death by Pravesh at Budhana town in the district on September 1, 2008, for bringing insufficient dowry.

Muslim Americans barred from returning to US

Washington, April 02: A growing number of Muslim and Arab Americans are finding it difficult to return to the United States after traveling abroad, advocacy groups say.

Following an attempted Christmas day bombing on a Detroit-bound airplane, Muslim and ethnic Arab citizens of the US are bearing the brunt of the stringent wave of security measures installed at US airports.

In one case, a US citizen was told without any explanation that he could “not fly with any airlines to the USA” when he presented his US passport at the airport in Bogota, Colombia for a flight to Miami last month.

Fire at ITO, seven rescued

New Delhi, April 02: Fire broke out on the fourth floor of a building near I.P. Bhavan at ITO in central Delhi, a fire official said Friday. Seven people have been rescued so far.

A fire department official said: “We received a call at around 11:45 a.m. about a fire in the Drum-Shaped Building at ITO.”

“We have rescued seven people till now,” the official added.

“Seventeen-eighteen fire tenders have been pressed into service,” he said.

The building is known to house many government offices.

Politicians unify to make Big B brand envoy of Allahabad

Allahabad, April 02: Cutting across party lines, politicians have joined hands to bring Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan to his birthplace Allahabad as its brand ambassador.

Around 70 corporators from various political outfits, including the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) have jointly launched a signature campaign in this regard.

Politicians say the main objective behind such a camping was to make Bachchan realise his “duties and responsibilities towards his birth place.”

Lindsay Lohan broke

Los Angeles, April 02: Actress Lindsay Lohan is broke and doesn’t even have enough money to pay for her rent, says a report.

Lohan was two months behind in rent and her landlord sent her a legal notice to pay or get out. Lohan just paid her landlord $23,000 to become current, reported tmz.com.

According to a source, Lohan isn’t pulling in any income and her prospects for work are almost non-existent because of substance abuse issues.

Three-year-old child hurt in slum fire

New Delhi, April 02: A slum fire in south Delhi’s Kishangarh area early Friday left three people injured, including a three-year-old girl. A similar fire in another south Delhi slum had left two children dead Thursday.

“Three people, including a three-year-old girl, were injured in a fire accident which took place in the slum clusters of Kishangarh in Mehrauli this morning,” a fire department official said.

The victims, Pappu and Seema, both 26, and three-year-old Priyanka were rushed to the Safdarjung hospital. Their injuries were, however, said to be not very grievous.

PC maker, inspiration for Microsoft dies in US

Atlanta, April 02: Henry Edward Roberts, a developer of an early personal computer that inspired Bill Gates to found Microsoft, died yesterday in Georgia. He was 68.

Roberts, whose build-it-yourself kit concentrated thousands of dollars worth of computer capability in an affordable package, inspired Bill Gates and his childhood friend Paul Allen to come up with Microsoft in 1975 after they saw an article about the MITS Altair 8800 in Popular Electronics.

Mumbai, April 02: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray today flayed tennis star Sania Mirza for her decision to marry Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, saying “had Sania’s heart been Indian, it wouldn’t have beaten for a Pakistani.”

Don’t do deals with Iran: US tells India, Pakistan

Washington, April 02: The United States is “encouraging” India and Pakistan to not conduct transactions like their gas pipeline with Iran at a time when it’s engaged in sensitive negotiations with Tehran over its nuclear programme.

The US “has encouraged our friends in the government of Pakistan to try to seek alternatives,” Assistant Secretary Of State For South And Central Asian Affairs Robert Blake told reporters Thursday in a briefing about his recent trip to India, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Saudi Arabia ‘holds off on executing sorcerer’

Beirut, April 02: Saudi Arabia has apparently decided to hold off on carrying out the execution of a Lebanese former TV presenter convicted of sorcery, a Lebanese minister and the man’s lawyer said.

Ali Sabat’s “mother should rest assured tonight”, Lebanese Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar said. “That is what I called his lawyer to say, and that is all that I can say.”

“If I didn’t have the necessary proof I wouldn’t have said that to her.”

Israeli planes mount Gaza attacks, 2 kids hurt

Gaza, April 02: Israeli planes and helicopters mounted at least seven missile attacks on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Friday, destroying what a military spokesman described as Palestinian munitions sites.

Four air strikes blew up two caravans near the town of Khan Younis, witnesses and Hamas officials said. There were no casualties.

A fifth missile hit a cheese factory in Gaza City, setting it on fire, witnesses and Hamas officials said. Hospital officials said two children were slightly wounded by flying debris.

Mumbai, April 02: Madhur Bhandarkar’s next film, which stars Kareena Kapoor, has been rumoured to be about the life of a successful actress whose career goes spiraling downwards later.

Curfew continues in riot-hit Hyderabad

Hyderabad, April 02: Curfew continued in riot-hit parts of Hyderabad for the fourth day Friday. Even though the situation remained peaceful, police were on high alert because of Friday prayers.

Police decided not to relax the curfew in all 25 police station areas since they anticipated trouble during Friday prayers. They have requested Muslims to pray in their homes.

Police Commissioner A.K. Khan told reporters that curfew, which was relaxed for two hours in 17 police station areas Thursday, would continue without any relaxation Friday.

New Delhi, April 02: Rahul Mahajan, a reality TV star who faces trial in a case of alleged drug abuse and married in a television show recently, today surrendered his passport in a Delhi court on his return from honeymoon in the Maldives.

Mahajan filed an application through his lawyer before Additional Sessions Judge J P S Malik for surrendering his passport.

Earlier, the court had allowed 35-year-old Mahajan to travel abroad with his newly-wed wife Dimpy Ganguly, 21, with whom his marriage was solemnised live during a TV reality show ‘Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jayega’ on March 7.

US asks Pakistan to curb anti-India terror groups

Washington, April 02: Reminding Islamabad that Punjab-based militants “are targeting Pakistan as well,” the United States has asked Pakistan to curb anti-India terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) blamed for the November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

Robert Blake, the assistant secretary of state for South Asia who visited India and Pakistan last month, said Thursday he had told his interlocutors in Islamabad that it could do more to improve relations with New Delhi.
