3 women killed as mound of earth caved in on them

Kaushambi, April 28: Three women were killed and four others injured when a mound of earth caved in on them at a village in Kaushambi district today, police said. The incident took place at Mahuari village in the district, about 51.2 km from Allahabad, when the women were digging earth, they said.

Three women died on the spot, police said, adding that the four injured were rushed to community health centre.

Zimbabwe stun Australia in World Twenty20 warm-up match

Gros Islet (St Lucia), April 28: Zimbabwe stunned Australia by one-run in a warm-up match ahead of the World Twenty20 Championship beginning Friday, at the Beausejour Stadium here Tuesday.

Chasing Zimbabwe’s 173 for seven off 20 overs, Australia reached 172 for seven despite scoring 31 runs in the final two overs.

Zimbabwe fought back from 36 for 4 through Elton Chigumbura’s couterattacking 76 off 33 balls. Chigumbura blasted six sixes and five fours while Craig Ervine chipped in with 39 in the stand of 114 to post a challenging total.

Alert in Guwahati after reports of ULFA bombers sneaking in

Guwahati, April 28: A massive security alert was sounded in Assam Wednesday following intelligence reports of at least three bombers of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) sneaking into the state’s main city of Guwahati to carry out serial explosions in public places.

A police spokesperson said the ULFA bombers belonged to the outfit’s 109th battalion and were aiming to trigger violent attacks in the city.

‘Kavi’ to be screened at Cannes film festival

New Delhi, April 28: After an Oscar nomination, ‘Kavi’ the story of an Indian slave boy, has now made it to the prestigious Cannes film festival.

The 19-minute-long film by American director Gregg Helvey will be screened in the Short Film Corner at the 63rd edition of the festival.

“Kavi will be screening in the Short Film Corner at Cannes. Many people are learning about modern slavery for the first time with the film and Cannes will be a big platform,” Helvey told PTI.

Washington, April 28: A former rising star at the CIA accused of drugging, raping and taping Muslim women while stationed in the Middle East appeared before a federal judge in Virginia today after skipping a pre-trial hearing more than a week ago and going on what sources called an apparent drug binge. Andrew Warren was arrested after an intensive search by federal officials concerned he might be a danger to himself.

Three youths booked for blackmailing teenage girl

Mumbai, April 28: A manhunt has been launched for three youths who allegedly extorted Rs 7.70 lakh in cash and gold bangles from a college student by threatening to make public her photographs in which she was in an “inebriated” state, police said.

Tavesh Madani, Karan Madani and Mahesh K, residents of suburban Charkop, had forcibly taken Rs 3.50 lakh cash and two gold bangles worth Rs 4.22 lakh from the victim since August 2009, they said.

Economy on way back to recovery: Pranab

New Delhi, April 28: The Government today projected a bright outlook for the economy for 2010-11, saying that the various measures taken by it had resulted in revival of demand and a heartening industrial recovery with a favourable capital market condition.

The economic stimulous had a salutary effect on the economy, it said.

The growth rate was likely to be 9 per cent in 2011-12 from 8.5 per cent in 2010-11, said Leader of the Lok Sabha and Minister for Finance Pranab Kumar Mukherjee while moving the Finance Bill for 2010-11 in the House today.

Taliban says it’s ready to face offensive as bombers attack base

Kandahar, April 28: The Taliban said Wednesday that its forces were ready to face a looming NATO offensive in southern Afghanistan’s Kandahar province as suicide bombers stormed a private security firm’s base there.

At least four security personnel and two bombers were killed Tuesday night in the suicide blasts and two-hour battle that followed, said Zalmai Ayubi, spokesman for the provincial governor.

BJP demands CBI probe in drugs scandal involving six cops in Goa

Panaji, April 28: Senior BJP leader Manohar Parrikar today sought a CBI probe into the ”drugs scandal” involving six cops belonging to the anti-narcotics cell (ANC) of the Goa police, in deference to the directives of the Supreme Court in similar cases involving the police.

Gujarat fake encounter: Crime Branch DCP arrested

Ahmedabad, April 28: In a breaking news update, it has been revealed that the DCP of the Crime Branch was arrested on Wednesday in Ahmedabad in the state fake encounter case.

IPS officer Abhay Chudasama who was serving as SP, Valsad at the time of the encounter was nabbed by the CBI which has been probing the case after taking the baton from the Supreme Court that was earlier in charge of the investigations.

The senior cop who was held today has been accused of supplying weapons at the time of the incident.

Jaya demands Raja’s dismissal over 2G spectrum row

Chennai, April 28: Leader of opposition in Tamil Nadu and AIADMK General Secretary J. Jayalalithaa Wednesday demanded dismissal of Communications Minister A. Raja over the controversial allocation of 2G telecom spectrum.

She also favoured bringing back a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer who was transferred while he was investigating the spectrum allotment case.

China executes man who killed 8 schoolchildren

Beijing, April 28: China executed Wednesday a man who stabbed eight schoolchildren to death last month in attacks that shocked the country, state media reported.

Zhang Minsheng, 41, was put to death in eastern Fujian province for the March 23 murders of eight children outside their elementary school as they waited with their parents for classes to start, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

During his trial earlier this month, Zhang admitted to killing the children because he had been upset after being jilted by a woman and treated badly by her wealthy family.

Injured Lee out of World Twenty20

Melbourne, April 28: Injury-plagued Australian paceman Brett Lee is out of the World Twenty20 owing to a strained muscle in his right arm.

Lee picked up the injury during Australia’s one-run loss to Zimbabwe in the warm-up game Tuesday. The World Cup begins April 30.

Lee’s injury is not the same as the elbow problem he had been operated on before the tournament. The forearm injury is near the inner side of Lee’s right elbow, but separate to his elbow surgery, the team spokesman was quoted as saying in The Age.

Will discuss phone tapping, IPL with opposition: Pranab

New Delhi, April 28: The government is committed to discussing with the opposition the Indian Premier League (IPL) controversy and allegations of phone tapping raised by it, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee assured the Lok Sabha Wednesday.

Mukherjee said he and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would speak to opposition leaders on the issues and said the government was answerable to the house.

Mumbai, April 28: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray today said a lot of parties, especially his nephew Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), have copied his agenda since he founded the outfit in 1966.

”A lot of duplicates have come up…may be with my blessings.

Azim Premji discusses joint ventures in UAE

Ajman, April 28: Indian industrialist Azim Premji, chairman of Wipro, one of India’s largest IT companies, discussed establishment of joint ventures with the ruler of Ajman, one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Premji is here on a visit to strengthen technological ties between the Gulf countries and India.

Terrorist attacks spike in Pakistan, Afghanistan

Washington, April 28: An increase in terrorist attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan triggered a spike in the number of civilians killed or wounded there last year, pushing South Asia past the Middle East as the top terror region in the world, according to figures compiled by a US intelligence agency.

Thousands of civilians overwhelmingly Muslim continue to be slaughtered in extremist attacks, contributing to the instability of the often shaky, poverty-stricken governments in the region, the statistics compiled by the National Counterterrorism Center show.

TRS talks of civil war over Telangana statehood

Hyderabad, April 28: On the occasion of its ninth anniversary Wednesday, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) warned of a war-like situation in Telangana was not made a separate state soon.

TRS ideologue K. Jayashankar said war-like situation would be inevitable if the Srikrishna committee fails to give a report in line with the aspirations of Telangana people.

Milk – top source of vitamin D for Americans

Washington, April 28: Milk is the primary source of vitamin D in the American diet, supplying nearly half of all of the much-needed vitamin, a new research says.

Using the latest national data on what more than 16,000 Americans aged two and older eat, researchers investigated the contribution of each food group to the total vitamin D intake.

No other food item came close to the vitamin D contribution of milk. In fact, for kids aged two to 18, milk provided nearly two-thirds of all vitamin D in the diet.

Lahore, April 28: A reception for newly-weds Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore was cut short after a large number of guests began pressing the couple to pose for pictures with them.

The Shoaib and Sania ShowMirza and Malik left the venue of the ‘walima’ (reception hosted by the groom’s family) at the Pearl Continental Hotel and the ceremony ended before the scheduled time last night after some guests began acting in an unruly manner, sources said.

Indian Air Force lost 28 pilots in four years: Antony

New Delhi, April 28: The Indian Air Force lost 28 pilots in 61 aircraft and helicopter accidents in the last four years, Parliament was informed Wednesday.

“Sixty-one defence aircraft/helicopters have crashed during the last four years. Twenty-eight pilots have died in these crashes,” Defence Minister AK Antony said in a written reply the in Rajya Sabha.

Woman survives 2,700 fire shots on her

Mexico City, April 28: More than 2,700 bullets were fired at a Mexican official in a failed attempt on her life, an official has said.

Public safety secretary Minerva Bautista Gomez, who was wounded in the attack in the western state of Michoacan, “is now stable and she’ll leave the hospital very soon”, the official said Tuesday.

The secretary was attacked Saturday on a Michoacan highway that had been blocked with a trailer by the hitmen.

Two of her bodyguards and two civilians were killed in the attack, while Bautista and nine others were wounded.

Food inflation to decline in coming months: Pranab

New Delhi, April 28: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said that prices of essential commodities have started softening and food inflation will decline in the coming months.

“Indications of softening food inflation are clearly visible… It is expected that this would decline in the coming months uninterruptedly,” he said while initiating discussions on the Finance Bill in the Lok Sabha.

Food inflation, the minister said, had declined from over 20 per cent in December, 2009, to 17.7 per cent in March, 2010.

Brett Lee ruled out of Twenty 20 World Cup

Melbourne, April 28: Australia’s campaign at the Twenty20 World Cup suffered a jolt as paceman Brett Lee was today ruled out of the elite event after injuring his bowling arm.

Lee suffered the injury during the yesterday’s lost warm up game against minnows Zimbabwe.

A few weeks back, Lee’s IPL stint was also hit by a fracture in the thumb of his right hand.

According to the team spokesman, Lee strained a muscle in his right elbow.

“It’s a muscle strain. We have gone to the ICC Technical Committee to ask for a replacement player,” the spokesman was quoted as saying by local media.
