‘JihadJane’ friend held in US on terror charges

Washington, April 03: A second woman was charged in the case of the terror suspect dubbed “JihadJane” after she flew back to the United States and surrendered to authorities, the US Justice Department said.

Jamie Paulin Ramirez, 31, a US national and a former Colorado resident, was charged with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, the department said in a statement.

The Department of Justice said Ramirez had travelled with Colleen LaRose, who dubbed herself “JihadJane” online, “to and around Europe to participate in and in support of violent jihad”.

Iraq, Afghan wars biggest logistical effort since WWII: US

Washington, April 03: The US military’s drawdown in Iraq and build-up in Afghanistan represents the biggest movement of troops and equipment since World War II, a top general said.

“This is the largest operation, that we’ve been able to determine, since the build-up for World War II,” said Lieutenant General William Webster, who oversees the effort as head of the Third Army.

Webster described a mammoth logistical task in moving 30,000 troops and tons of supplies to Afghanistan, while pulling out equipment and tens of thousands of forces from Iraq all by a September deadline.

New Army Chief rules out deploying forces against Maoists

New Delhi, April 03: Newly-appointed Army Chief General VK Singh has ruled out using the Army against Naxals, saying they are not secessionists.

“The Naxalite problem is a law and order problem, which is a state subject. It stems from certain issues on the ground, be it of governance, be it of administration, be it of socio-economic factors. Since it is not a secessionist movement, I think our polity is astute and wise enough to know the implications of using the Army against their own people,” General Singh was reported as saying on Friday.

Hamas ‘working to curb Gaza rocket attacks’

Gaza, April 03: Leaders of the Hamas militant movement which controls the Gaza Strip have said they are working to curb rocket attacks against Israel by smaller factions.

Spokesman Ayman Taha said the Hamas government was trying to maintain calm in Gaza for “the national interest”.

He spoke hours after Israeli planes carried out bombing raids on what it said were weapons factories in Gaza.

Hamas PM Ismail Haniya also urged the international community to intervene to avoid an escalation in violence.

Chidambaram to visit clash-hit West Bengal area

Burdwan, April 03: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram will visit Mangalkote in Burdwan district on Saturday which had witnessed clashes between activists of Trinamool Congress and CPI(M), during his two-day schedule in the state.

Officials here were tight-lipped about the villages to be visited by Chidambaram as also whom he would meet.

Chidambaram’s visit to Mangalkot, which had witnessed recurring violence in August and December last year comes after Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee met him in Delhi on March 31.

SC collegium asks Dinakaran to go on leave

New Delhi, April 03: Karnataka High Court Chief Justice PD Dinakaran, who is facing allegations of corruption, has been advised by the Supreme Court collegium to go on leave.

Justice Dinakaran has not been performing judicial work since December last following allegations that he was involved in land grabbing. Justice Madan B Lokur will take Justice Dinakaran’s place as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka HC after the latter proceeds on leave.

Obama wants Iran sanctions within ‘weeks’

Washington, April 03: US President Barack Obama declared Tuesday that he wants to see the UN Security Council adopt sanctions against Iran within “weeks” over the Islamic republic’s refusal to resolve the dispute over its nuclear activities.

“I’m not interested in waiting months for a sanctions regime to be in place. I’m interested in seeing that regime in place in weeks,” Obama said at a press conference with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Karzai speaks by phone with Clinton to discuss anti-U.S. comments

Kabul, April 03: Afghan President Hamid Karzai and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke by telephone on Friday, Karzai’s spokesman said, to discuss Karzai’s anti-U.S. comments.

The spokesman said Karzai and Clinton “recommitted themselves to the partnership between the two countries.”

“Afghan President Karzai called Secretary Clinton today to clarify his statements from yesterday, and they had a constructive conversation,” said Philip J. Crowley, a State Department spokesman.

Vladimir Putin meets Chavez in Caracas

Caracas, April 03: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has received Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin at the presidential palace in Caracas.

Putin is in Venezuela as Moscow is actively seeking closer ties with South America. The two leaders discussed further military cooperation among other things.

Venezuela plans to secure the purchase of 90 “T-72” class tanks.

The two sides have also discussed further cooperation in the energy sector and granting Caracas a financial credit worth as much as over two billion dollars.

Obama’s approval rating hits another record low

Washington, April 03: According to a poll conducted by CBS News, Barack Obama’s overall job approval rating has fallen to an all-time low of 44 percent.

The latest figure is down five points from late March — just before the healthcare bill’s passage in the House of Representatives.

Forty-one percent of those questioned have said they disapprove of the president’s performance.

The CBS poll also shows half of the American people are not happy with Obama’s handling of the economy.

84 percent of those polled think the US economy is still in a bad condition.

Russia delivers S-300 missile system to China

Moscow, April 03: Russia has completed the sale of a package of S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems to China in a deal which is said to be worth over two billion dollars.

Igor Ashurbeili, the general director of the Almaz-Antei joint, which manufactures the S-300 system has confirmed the delivery of 15 batteries of the long range surface-to-air missile system to Beijing, reported RIA Novosti.

All the supplied S-300 systems will be used for the defense of the Chinese cities of Beijing and Shanghai, according to a Russian official.

Sania defends Shoaib as tussle with Ayesha reaches court

New Delhi, April 03: The tussle between Shoaib Malik and his supposed former wife Ayesha Siddiqui reached the court on Saturday as the latter’s family has sent a legal notice to Malik, asking him to give a public divorce to their daughter before getting married to ace Indian tennis player, Sania Mirza.

The Malik family, on the other hand, has reportedly hired a Delhi-based lawyer Ramesh Gupta to fight the case for them. The Maliks will file a case of defamation against the Siddiquis.

Hyderabad, April 03: Curfew will be relaxed in the communal violence-hit areas of the city on Saturday as the situation remained incident-free yesterday and the day before.

According to City Police Commissioner A K Khan, prohibitory orders will be relaxed from 10 am to 1 pm in all 17 police stations limits in the old city and from 8 am to 10 am in eight areas outside the old city.

No untoward incident was reported from any part of the city after religious leaders appealed to the faithful to offer Friday prayers at home on the request of the police commissioner.
