No funds to implement Right to Education Act: Mayawati

Lucknow, April 04: In yet another retort to the union government, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Saturday declared that she was not in a position to implement the provisions of the new Right to Education Act in the state.

The chief minister in a letter shot off to the prime minister late Saturday evening said that her government was not in a position to bear the financial burden and the state did not have the required infrastructure.

Belgian bishop denounces silence on sex abuses

Belgium, April 04: Belgium’s top Roman Catholic bishop has denounced the “guilty silence” of church officials in the pedophile priest scandal that has rocked much of Europe and the US.

Archbishop of Brussels, Andre Joseph Leonard, has criticized the church for often worrying more about the reputation of priests and “savagely exploiting the abused children.”

Leonard’s comments come as Pope Benedict the sixteenth himself faced allegations that when he was archbishop of Munich, he helped to protect predator priests.

Kabul condemns German ‘friendly-fire’ killing

Kabul, April 04: Afghanistan has strongly condemned the killing of six its soldiers by German troops.

The Afghan Defense Ministry issued a statement calling for a probe into the incident, which claimed the lives of three members of the Afghan National Army in the northern province of Kunduz on Friday.

An initial statement by the International Security Assistance Force said German soldiers opened fire on two “unmarked civilian cars” which failed to stop when signaled to halt, but a NATO spokesman later said it was unclear if the vehicles were civilian, the BBC reported.

‘Palestinians determined to acquire their rights’

Gaza, April 04: Hamas Political Bureau chief Khaled Meshaal says that the Palestinians will do whatever is necessary to acquire their rights.

Talking to reporters after a meeting with senior members of Palestinian factions at his home in Damascus, Syria on Saturday, Meshaal said that Hamas will do everything to “obtain the rights stolen from us, including confrontation with the enemy.”

“The possibilities for war exist in the entire region,” the Israeli daily Yedioth Aharonot quoted the exiled Hamas leader as saying.

Chidambaram arrives in Lalgarh amidst shutdown call

Lalgarh (West Bengal), April 04: Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram arrived in this Maoist-infested belt of West Bengal’s West Midnapore district Sunday to review the situation amidst a shutdown called by a pro-ultra tribal body.

Chidambaram, who flew in a helicopter from Kolkata in the morning, landed near the Lalgarh police station and went inside it to talk to the security forces troopers.

He is also scheduled to go to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in the area.

New sanctions against Iran would be unfair: Turkish FM

Ankara, April 04: Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says it is unfair that certain Western countries want to impose a new round of sanctions on Iran on the pretext that the country allegedly has a clandestine nuclear weapons program.

In an interview with the Italian weekly magazine L’Espresso published on Saturday, Davutoglu said a tougher line on Iran would not work out since previous rounds of sanctions against the Islamic Republic have been ineffective.

Ruchika’s school claims inquiry ignored facts

Chandigarh, April 04:Faced with the threat of disaffiliation, the Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School claims a magisterial inquiry “willingly ignored” facts while indicting it for the expulsion of teenaged molestation victim Ruchika Girhotra, a charge denied by the Chandigarh administration.

Following the school’s indictment, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, had issued a notice to the school, located in Sector 26, in February asking it to explain why it should not be disaffiliated.

Prohibitory orders clamped in and around State Sectt: CP

Hyderabad, April 04: Hyderabad City Police has clamped certain prohibitory orders in and around State Secretariat from 0600 hrs tomorrow to 0600 hrs on April 11.

In a release the City Police Commissioner A K Khan yesterday said, the public were informed that any person violating the orders shall be liable for prosecution under the Hyderabad City Police Act, 1348, Fasli (No IX) and the orders shall be in force with effect from 0600 hrs on April 5 to 0600 hrs till April 11.” However, the Commissioner could not specify any reason for the same.

BHEL Bhopal Unit records 60 pc growth in exports

Bhopal; April 04 (Pervez Bari): India’s giant Public Sector Undertaking, (PSU), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, (BHEL), Bhopal Unit recorded 12 per cent increase in its turnover during the fiscal year 2009-2010. The turnover was to the tune of Rs. 3,708 crores during 2009-10 against Rs. 3,308 crores in the previous financial year.

While in exports too, the company registered a record 60 per cent growth over the previous year contributing Rs. 966 crores to the turnover. Last year, the turnover was Rs. 605 crores.

Kannada heroine Praneetha to act in Telugu movie

Bangalore, April 04: Kannada actress Praneetha, who has been making news for all the wrong reasons in her one-year film career, has been selected to play the lead role in Telugu film “Bava” directed by debutant Ram Babu.

The actress, who paired with a bigger star like Darshan in her debut film “Porki”, will be playing the role of a village belle, unlike her modern girl’s role in her first Kannada film “Porki”. Praneetha says she would prefer to work in Kannada films but would also take up some strong roles in other language films.

Kudankulam nuclear power project delayed

Chennai, April 04: The delay in the arrival of components for the upcoming 2,000 MW nuclear reactor at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu has led to the postponement of the commissioning of the first unit of the project by a few months, an official said.

Service providers for the project like the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) are clueless about the possible date for the arrival of the components.

“Rajneeti’ has been a long journey. It is a film about politics and tries to cover most aspects involved in politics – personal, family, social, state, national. Washington, April 04: Reading a bedtime story to your child for 20 minutes every night could improve his or her literacy by at least 10 school days a year, experts have said.

Banking on this theory, an American non-governmental organisation has launched a programme which encourages families to read together for at least 20 minutes each night.

“Read for just even 20 minutes (every night) and it makes all the difference in literacy’s goals,” Laura Numeroff, a New York Times best-selling author and illustrator of children’s books, was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.

Businessmen paying ‘Goonda Tax’ in Mayawati’s Uttar Pradesh: Rajnath

Kanpur, April 04: Targeting the Mayawati government, former BJP president Rajnath Singh today alleged the law and order in Uttar Pradesh had deteriorated with businessmen being forced to pay “Goonda Tax”.

“There are complaints from businessmen in different parts of the state that they are being forced to pay Goonda Tax,” he told reporters.

This was indicative of the worsening law and order in the state, the BJP leader said after the inaugural ceremony of ‘Sachin Ramesh Sarv Dharm Dwar’ gate here.

Fraud by BSNL employees in Aligarh unearthed

Aligarh, April 4 (IANS) Many of the taxis hired by the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) office in the past decade for official reasons have turned out to be scooters and tractors, pointing to a massive fraud, a Right to Information Act activist has discovered.

Bimal Khemani, an RTI activist, claims to have uncovered a multi-crore rupee fraud in hiring taxis for official transport by BSNL authorities in Aligarh between 1997 and 2008. “It is a very curious case of embezzlement of funds by the BSNL authorities,” Khemani told IANS.

Postponed SSC exams to be held from April 9

Hyderabad, April 04: The SSC examinations that were postponed because of the curfew in parts of the city will now be held from April 9, the director of government examinations announced on Saturday. The next exam of Social Studies Paper II will be held as per the original schedule on April 6.
