US-Israel in fresh Syria-Iran-Hezbollah allegations

Washington, April 28: US Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Tuesday accused Iran and Syria of arming Hezbollah with increasingly sophisticated rockets and missiles.

“Syria and Iran are providing Hezbollah with rockets and missiles of ever-increasing capability,” Gates said at a joint news conference with his Israeli counterpart, Ehud Barak.

“And we’re at a point now, where Hezbollah has far more rockets and missiles than most governments in the world, and this is obviously destabilizing for the whole region and we’re watching it very carefully.”

Egyptian painting fetches 2.43 million dollars

Dubai, April 28: A work by Egyptian master Mahmud Said sold for 2.43 million dollars at an auction in Dubai, a record for a modern painting by a Middle Eastern artist, auction house Christie’s said.

The painting, “Les Chadoufs,” portrays Egyptian peasants drawing water from the Nile.

Christie’s, which organised Tuesday night’s auction at a luxury hotel in Dubai, had estimated its value at between 150,000 and 200,000 dollars. The identity of the buyer was not revealed.

The British auction house said the price was a “record for any modern painting by any Middle Eastern artist.”

Israel shoots dead Palestinian protester in Gaza

Gaza City, April 28: A 20-year-old Palestinian was killed in the Gaza Strip by Israeli fire on Wednesday during a protest near the heavily guarded border fence, local medics said.

Ahmed Salim, 20, was taken to Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital after being shot in the thigh and died shortly after arrival, according to Muawiya Hassanein, the head of Gaza emergency services.

The Israeli military would not immediately comment.

Egypt hands down jail terms in Hezbollah trial

Cairo, April 28: An Egyptian court handed down jail sentences on Wednesday to 26 defendants it found guilty of working for Hezbollah.

The 22 accused who were in the dock received jail terms of between six months and 15 years, despite calls from prosecutors for the death penalty to be imposed.

Three of the four defendants who remain on the run, including the alleged head of the Hezbollah cell, Lebanese national Mohammed Qabalan, received life sentences. The fourth received a lesser prison term, lawyers said.

ICC rejects new bid to try Darfur rebel chief

The Hague, April 28: The International Criminal Court said Monday it had rejected a new prosecution attempt to bring Darfur rebel chief Bahar Idriss Abu Garda to trial for the killing of 12 African Union soldiers.

Prosecutors at the court in The Hague had challenged a decision by the ICC in February not to try the rebel leader over the 2007 attack in Sudan’s Darfur region.

But judges rejected the challenge on Friday, an ICC statement said.

“The arguments raised by the prosecution in its application for leave to appeal do not meet the requirements for an appeal,” it said.

SJVNL IPO hits equity market on April 27

Mumbai, April 28: The Initial Public offer (IPO) of state-run Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL) will open on April 29.

The SJVNL IPO, a joint venture of Centre and Himachal Pradesh government, will close on May 3, 2010.

The government has been aiming to raise Rs 1,000 crore through the SJVNL IPO.

The price band of SJVNL IPO is fixed at Rs 23-26.

With the SJVNL IPO government will also start its disinvestments exercise for the fiscal 2010-11.

Comedy not easy, says Lara

Mumbai, April 28: Bollywood actress Lara Dutta, who has been in quite a few comedy movies of late has said that to reinvent every time in a comedy is a difficult task.

“As I have worked in several comedy films, I believe to reinvent yourself and be different in every comic role is the most difficult task. Even to consistently deliver is another difficulty,” Lara told news agency here.

Lara who made her debut in Bollywood with ‘Andaaz’ in 2003, have been a part of several comedy films like ‘No Entry’, ‘Bhagam Bhag’, ‘Partner’ and ‘Do Knot Disturb’.

Khurshid gives clean chit to IPL teams

New Delhi, April 28: In a major respite to BCCI and IPL team owners, the Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid has given clean chit to IPL teams, saying there are no tax violations by franchises.

Delta Air Lines Flight 273 from Paris to Atlanta was diverted to Maine because the passenger said he had a fake passport and explosives aboard the plane, US officials said.

The passport was real, law enforcement officials said, but there were no explosives on the Airbus A330.
