Sarkozy goes to war over affair gossip

Paris, April 06: President Nicolas Sarkozy has ordered a campaign of terror to punish those responsible for rumours which circulated last month on supposed tit-for-tat, extra-marital affairs by the French first couple.

Although the rumours have been discredited – and formally denied – the Elysée Palace is not prepared to let the matter rest. Two journalists working for the internet edition of the Journal du Dimanche – which repeated the rumours in a website blog – have already been fired, apparently under pressure from the Elysée.

‘Big four audit firms bending laws in India’

New Delhi, April 06: A committee of accounting and auditing regulator ICAI has said that the global Big Four auditing firms are circumventing laws while
providing auditing services in the country.

The Big Four — PricewaterhouseCoopers , KPMG, Ernst & Young and Deloitte — are using the permission granted for doing consultancy work but carrying out other services that they are not permitted to do, a highpowered body of the ICAI, that is probing the Satyam scam, said.

Chicago, April 06: A Pakistani-origin taxi driver indicted on charges of providing material support to terror group al Qaeda and accused of having links with HuJI chief Ilyas Kashmiri on Monday pleaded not guilty in a US court here.

Wearing an orange prison jumpsuit with his hands shackled, 56-year-old Raja Lahrasib Khan appeared before US Magistrate Court Judge Zagel and pleaded not guilty to the charges of providing material support and funds to Osama bin Laden’s terror group.

China to execute Japanese convict on Tuesday

Dalian, April 06: China has told Japan that it plans to execute a Japanese man convicted of drug smuggling on Tuesday, sources said on Monday.

It was earlier believed that China would execute Mitsunobu Akano, 65, who was convicted of attempting to smuggle 2.5 kilograms of stimulant drugs from China to Japan in 2006, on Monday.

His death sentence was finalised in April 2009. Earlier today, Akano’s family members apparently met him at a detention facility in the northeastern city of Dalian. A Japanese diplomatic vehicle believed to be carrying them was seen leaving the facility.

50 % quota for women in IITs, IIMs, Govt jobs: Mulayam

New Delhi, April 06: Samajwadi Party (SP) has come up with a new demand on the Women’s Bill. The party demands 50 percent quota to women in educational institutions as well as government jobs.

The demand was made by SP’s Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, who has already called for “reservation within reservation” for Muslim women and backward classes in the Women’s Reservation Bill. He said political parties should be asked to give reservation to women in distribution of election tickets and representation should be given to those from backward classes and also Muslims and Dalits.

US to release its report on nuclear strategy on Tuesday

Washington, April 06: Ahead of the next week’s Nuclear Security Summit to be attended by leaders from more than 40 countries including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the US on Monday said it would release its nuclear strategy on Tuesday.

The Nuclear Strategy Report is expected to stress non-nuclear deterrent capabilities, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

Gibbs said that it would build the momentum for the Nuclear Security Summit that has been convened by President Barack Obama in Washington on April 12 and 13.

U.S. to unveil policy on limiting nuclear arms use

Washington, April 06: The Obama administration is adopting a new policy limiting the circumstances under which the U.S. would use nuclear weapons, keeping with the President’s pledge to give the nuclear arsenal a less prominent role in U.S. defence strategy.

In line with an in-depth review of U.S. nuclear weapons policy, the administration also hopes to persuade Russia to agree to open talks on mutual cuts in nuclear arsenals that go beyond a new arms treaty to be signed this week, U.S. officials said.

4 shot, more than 50 arrested in NYC mayhem

New York, April 06: Four people were shot and dozens were arrested Monday in a mile-long stretch of Manhattan near Times Square in mayhem following the city’s annual auto show, police said.

A group of teenagers and young adults ran amok, squaring off against one another and harassing pedestrians along a one-mile stretch of midtown near the Jacob A. Javits Center, where the New York International Auto Show is held, police said.

Chief NYPD spokesman Paul J. Browne said additional officers were on patrol because similar problems have happened during past auto shows.

Russia To Sell Arms Worth $5bn To Venezuela Share Share Comments

Caracas, April 06: Russia may sell $5bn worth of weapons to Venezuela, prime minister Vladimir Putin announced after a visit to the South American country.

Mr Putin met Venezuela president Hugo Chavez – a leading critic of the United States – over the weekend to discuss oil, defence and nuclear co-operation.

Mr Chavez has said he needs to develop his military might to counter US forces in neighbouring Colombia, Washington’s closest ally in the region.

Sensex up 53 points in early trade on global cues

Mumbai, April 06: Continuing its winning-streak for the third straight session, the Bombay Stock Exchange Tuesday shot up by another 53 points in early trade on increased capital inflows by foreign funds amid hopes of strong fourth quarter corporate earnings.

The Sensex, which had gained over 407 points in the last two sessions, added 53.21 points, or 0.29 percent, to 17,988.89, the highest level since February 2008.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange Nifty index rose by 20.25 points, or 0.37 percent, to 5,388.65.

Clinton ‘outraged and saddened’ by consulate attack in Pakistan

Washington, April 06: Outraged by the attack on the American Consulate in Peshawar by the Taliban, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today said “an attack on the diplomatic mission strike at the heart of international cooperation and is unacceptable in any country at any time.”

“The assault this morning is part of a wave of violence perpetrated by brutal extremists who seek to undermine Pakistan’s democracy and sow fear and discord,” Clinton said in a statement.

Obama will visit India soon

New Delhi, April 06: United States President Barack Obama will visit India soon. The announcement was made by U.S. Ambassador to India Timothy J. Roemer during a brief interaction with journalists after calling on Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee here on Monday.

Mr. Roemer said he discussed a host of issues with Ms. Banerjee, as also issues relating to India-U.S. relations. However, he declined to directly comment on whether he had specifically discussed the controversial Nuclear Liability Bill with the Minister.

No more statues and portraits in Parliament

New Delhi, April 06: A decision has been taken to disallow further installation of statues and portraits in Parliament to maintain its neat and spacious look.

A high-powered committee of Parliament headed by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar has recommended that no more statues could be installed in Parliament in future holding the view that it is already over-crowded with high profiled figures.

Washington, April 06: Amid a series of anti-US rhetorics coming from Afghan President Hamid Karzai, the White House on Monday showed signs of “frustration” with regard to this war-torn country where its forces have been engaged in war against terrorism for the past eight years.

“On behalf of the American people, we’re frustrated,” the White House Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs, told reporters when asked if the Obama administration is concerned about the recent anti-US remarks of the Afghan President.

Nitish for cent per cent funding for education Act

Patna, April 06: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday demanded that the Centre meet cent per cent financial requirements under the Right to Free and compulsory Education Act.

“Though we welcome the new act for free and compulsory education… the Centre must bear the cent per cent burden on it as it is beyond the resources of a cash-strapped state like Bihar,” Kumar told reporters in Patna.

He said the state government was irrevocably committed to implementing the act and “in fact, we are already implementing it evident from the coverage of school going children in Bihar.”

Sherpa to scatter Hillary’s ashes on Everest

Kathmandu, April 06: One of the world’s top mountaineers left Kathmandu Tuesday on an expedition to Mount Everest, where he will scatter the ashes of Edmund Hillary, the first man to stand on the summit.

Apa Sherpa, who has scaled Everest a record 19 times, said he wanted to honour Hillary’s contribution to the Sherpa communities that inhabit Nepal’s eastern Himalayas, where the world’s highest mountain is located.

He plans to hold a small Buddhist ceremony at the top of Everest, which the Sherpa people regard as sacred, to pray for the celebrated New Zealand mountaineer.

7 killed in southern West Virginia coal mine blast
