Pakistan attacks kill 46, target US consulate

Peshawar, April 06: Islamist militants armed with guns, grenades and suicide car bombs targeted the US consulate in Pakistan’s northwestern capital and a political rally, killing 46 people on Monday.

The attacks in quick succession were among the deadliest so far this year in nuclear-armed Pakistan, where insecurity has raised concerns in the United States as Washington steps up the fight in Afghanistan and against Al-Qaeda.

London, April 06: Tiger Woods’ kindergarten teacher Maureen Decker demands an apology from the golfer amid accusations that she failed to protect him from racist bullies.

Malaysia bans WMD shipments to rogue states

Kuala Lumpur, April 06: Malaysia has outlawed the shipment through its waters of weapons of mass destruction which could end up in the hands of rogue states, reports said on Tuesday.

Activists say the country’s lack of export controls meant fugitive arms dealers were able to ship nuclear weapons to pariah states like North Korea and Iran, a charge the government denies.

Madras HC rejects Nalini’s plea on premature release

Chennai, April 06: The Madras High Court dismissed on Tuesday a plea of Nalini, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, seeking premature release under the general amnesty scheme.

Rejecting her petition, a division bench comprising Justices Elipe Dharma Raj and K.K. Sasidharan observed that 44-year-old Nalini had committed the crime in a cunning and meticulous manner which killed the former Prime Minister in Sriperumbudur on May 21, 1991.

Seoul, April 06: Reclusive North Korea has developed its own computer software operating system that is heavy on security, greatly influenced by Microsoft and about 10 years out of date.

North Korea is one of the world’s most isolated states that tries to cut off the flow of information from the outside world. It teaches students about the Internet by showing them photocopied papers of computer monitors.

UN closes Peshawar offices over security fears

Peshawar, April 06: The United Nations on Tuesday announced a two-day closure of its offices in Peshawar, citing security fears following a deadly attack on the US consulate in the Pakistani city.

Islamist militants with guns, grenades and suicide car bombs Monday targeted the consulate in Peshawar, killing at least two security personnel, and bombed a political rally in the northwest district of Lower Dir, killing 51 people.

“For security reasons, United Nations’ offices in Peshawar have closed temporarily for two days,” UN spokeswoman Ishrat Rizvi told AFP.

Death toll rises to 25 in West Virginia mine blast

West Virginia, April 06: The death toll rose to 25 and four coal miners were still missing deep underground on Tuesday after an explosion killed ripped through a West Virginia mine owned by Massey Energy.

The accident on Monday at the Upper Big Branch Mine in Montcoal, also known as Whitesville, was one of the deadliest at a U.S. coal mine in recent years. The mine, owned by Massey’s Performance Coal subsidiary, is about 30 miles (48 km) south of the state capital, Charleston.

Show political will on women’s bill, CPI-M tells government

New Delhi, April 06: The government should show political will in passing the women’s quota bill in the Lok Sabha, the Communist Party of India-Marxist said Tuesday, a day after an all-party meeting on the issue failed to reach a consensus.

“The government should show political will,” CPI-M MP Brinda Karat said on the government’s decision to hold further discussion on the bill without setting a time frame.

It did not say whether the meeting would be held before the house assembles April 15 after a three-week break.

Panchayat orders killing of couple in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, April 06: A panchayat in Uttar Pradesh has ordered the killing of a couple after they eloped and married against their families’ wishes, police said Tuesday.

The Khedka village panchayat in UBaghpat district, about 400 km from Lucknow, passed the order against Jameel, 30, and his wife after their families complained.

After the panchayat order Sunday, the couple fled the village for their safety. The police registered a formal complaint Tuesday after some local journalists intervened.

Scientist harnesses urine to save water

New Delhi, April 06: First it was gobar gas ( biogas generated from cow dung) that revolutionised renewable energy in rural India. Now it is the turn to harness urine.

The pee, that raises quite a stink, is going to undergo a sea change thanks to the efforts of a scientist from the Delhi Indian Institute of Technology ( IIT).

Scientists believe that urine smells when it gets oxidised.

The idea is to trap the urine and, with it, the smell.

Illinois, April 06: Talking to babies can boost their brain power, a study has revealed.

Months before babies start to speak, words play an important role in their brain development and even at the age of three months, words have a bigger impact on their minds than other sounds, including music, reports dailymail.co.uk.

The research showed that babies who heard words were better able to ‘categorise’ pictures than those who simply heard tones.

Almost 50 three-month-old boys and girls were shown a series of pictures of fish, accompanied by either words or beeps.

Antenna glitch on historic space shuttle flight

Cape Canaveral, April 06: The US space shuttle Discovery blasted off Monday toward the International Space Station for a historic mission that put more women in orbit than ever.

NASA initially hailed a near-perfect launch but later said an antenna used to transmit television pictures back to Earth that is also an integral part of the radar docking system had failed to work when the shuttle reached orbit.

ISRO receives flak for delay in launching Israeli satellite

Bangalore, April 06: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has come under criticism from promoters of an Israeli astronomical satellite for allegedly delaying its launch and shifting the blame on schedule slippages.

Tauvex comprises three ultra-violet band telescopes developed by Tel Aviv University and Israel space agency (ELOP), with Bangalore-based Indian Institute of Astrophysics providing the software and science and mission planning.

Its flight date on board an Indian launcher was first supposed to be in late 2005 and has continually slipped.

Nagpur, April 06: Rajasthan Royals skipper Shane Warne on Monday attributed their two-run victory over Deccan Chargers to the disciplined performance put up by the bowlers and fielders and said it was the team spirit which eventually helped them to fight it till the end.

Shane Watson scored 58, while Warne registered a four-wicket haul to edge out Deccan Chargers in a crucial encounter in the Indian Premier League today.

“It was one of those days when a few things went right for us. Our fielding and catching was superb, our intensity and all the bowlers did a great job,” Warne said.

At least 70 CRPF personnel killed by Naxalites

Raipur, April 06: At least 70 CRPF personnel were killed in an attack by Naxalites in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh early today.

The attack took place when a CRPF patrol party was returning from a road opening duty in the naxalite-infested Mukrana forest in the district between 6 to 7 AM.

“We have rushed helicopters to evacuate the casualties,” Chhattisgarh Director General of Police Viswa Ranjan told PTI.

The death toll in the attack may rise as many of the personnel have been seriously injured.

SEBI revises timeline for filing financial results

Mumbai, April 06: The markets regulator on Monday said it had changed the time period for listed companies to file quarterly and annual results, in order to streamline the disclosure of financial results.

Listed companies will now have to submit audited quarterly results within 45 days from the end of the relevant quarter, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) said in a statement.

Currently, listed Indian companies submit unaudited results within 30 days from the quarter-end.

ULFA rebel killed in encounter

Tura(Meghalaya), Apr 06: An ULFA militant was killed in an encounter with a joint police and army team in West Garo Hills district, police said today. A group of around three to four militants fired at a joint security team who were conducting a search operation at Rogalgiri near Tikrikila in West Garo Hills district last night, Superintendent of Police Dalton P Marak told.

The security forces retaliated, killing one of the militants on the spot, while others managed to flee.

Coal India in talks with Peabody for stake, JV

New Delhi, April 06: U.S. miner Peabody Energy Corp is one of five companies in which Coal India is considering to buy equity stakes or for mining joint ventures, the chairman of the Indian company said.

“They are very keen to get into a partnership with us,” Partha Bhattacharyya said at a news conference late on Monday, referring to Peabody.

India’s coal supply does not meet the growing demand for power, steel and cement sectors, and difficulties in setting up new mines has had companies look overseas for secured supplies.

S Korean warship catches up with hijacked tanker

Seoul, April 06: A South Korean navy destroyer caught up with a hijacked supertanker carrying about $160 million of crude oil and was maneuvering nearby in the Indian Ocean, South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

The supertanker, on its way from Iraq to the United States, is believed to have been hijacked by Somali pirates, the latest high-value bargaining chip for the sea bandits. Similar seizures of oil supertankers in the waters off the coast of lawless Somalia have yielded ransoms as high as $5.5 million.

New Delhi, April 06: Bollywood starlet Geeta Basra is being stalked by a young man for the past six months and even though she has taken the matters to the police, there hasn’t been much respite.

Though the 26-year-old actress hasn’t seen this man in person, she is being constantly harassed through phone calls and SMSs, something which is making it hard for Geeta to even “find breathing space” for herself.
