Hyderabad, April 29 (Siasat News): A day long hunger strike of Hyderabad Union of Journalists (HUJ) affiliated to Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) was organized at Press Club Basheer Baug in protest against the IPS official Anjenayalu who was promoted as commissioner of police, Vijayawada.

Many political leaders, editors and senior journalists of different newspapers reached the camp to show their solidarity with the journalists on strike.

Aamir Khan to meet blog fans in Paris

New Delhi, April 29: Bollywood star Aamir Khan has decided to catch up with his blog fans in Paris when he is there on Sunday.

“I am going to be in Paris on May 2 and would very much like to meet up with those of you who are interested. Will restrict the group to five,” Aamir posted on his blog.

“Each one of you can bring one more person with you. If you happen to be below 18 years of age, you will have to accompanied by an adult.”

The actor also asked his fans to enter their contact details on his blog page.

Antigua ground ‘fit’ to host international cricket

The ICC has cleared the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua to host international cricket after it passed an inspection by the governing body following a 12-month suspension.

In February last year, a Test match between West Indies and England lasted just 10 balls before being abandoned because of an “unfit” outfield.

Georgetown, April 29: The ICC then told the West Indies Cricket Board that the ground could not be used for international cricket for 12 months and also gave the board an official warning for not preparing the ground effectively for the match.

I am friends with Suzzane, says Barbara Mori

Mumbai, April 29: Mexican actress Barbara Mori, who debuts in Bollywood with Hrithik Roshan in ‘Kites’ says that rumours about their alleged love affair did not affect her close friendship with the actor’s wife Suzzane.

“Suzzane is a beautiful human being…same as all the other Roshans. They treated me well with so much love that the gossips about a romantic linkup did not affect me. Suzzane and I became close friends and stayed in touch even after the film completed,” Barbara told PTI in an interview.

She said she just laughed off the rumours when she heard about it last year.

Punjab on terror radar?

Chandigarh, April 29: Pakistan-based terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and pro-Khalistan groups based in Pakistan, Canada and other countries are planning strikes in Punjab, according to security agencies.

Sources in Punjab Police, quoting intelligence inputs from central and state agencies, said that pro-Khalistan groups based in other countries, especially Pakistan, recently reached an understanding with the LeT “to resort to targeted killing of anti-Sikh and anti-religious elements in Punjab”.

100,000 troops moves from India border

Washington, April 29: Pakistan has moved 100,000 troops from its borders with India, thinning the lines, to bolster its campaign against Taliban and other militants on its restive border with Afghanistan, the Pentagon said today.

The mass shifting of troops is an acknowledgement of the fact that terrorism and internal insurgency were posing more threat to Pakistan now, the Pentagon said in a report to the US Congress.

Iran, Egypt ready for battle at U.N. nuclear meeting

United Nations, April 29: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is expected to attend the conference, which opens on Monday and runs until May 28. He will be facing off with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who heads the U.S. delegation at the meeting at U.N. headquarters.

Diplomats expect Ahmadinejad to take a defiant stand against the United States and its Western allies, accusing them of trying to deprive developing states of nuclear technology while turning a blind eye toward Israel’s nuclear capability.

Mumbai, April 29: Small screen is set for a clash between Zee TV’s “Dance India Dance L’il Masters” and Colors‘ “Chak Dhoom Dhoom” – both of which are children’s reality dance shows.

Both go on air Friday. While “Dance India Dance…” features ace choreographers Farah Khan and Sandip Soparrkar on the judges‘ panel, “Chak Dhoom Dhoom” will see Saroj Khan, Ahmad Khan and actor Vindu Dara Singh pointing out the pros and cons of the performers.

Hamas: Egypt forces gas, kill 4 tunnel smugglers

Gaza City, April 29: Egyptian forces pumped gas into a cross-border tunnel used to smuggle goods into the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, killing four Palestinians, Hamas officials said.

Egypt has been under pressure to seal off the hundreds of tunnels that are a key economic lifeline for the blockaded Palestinian territory but which are also used to bring in weapons for the Islamic militant group.

London, April 29: Britons, who drink an estimated 165 million cups of tea every day, find it difficult to describe how a good cup of tea tastes like. Most said “hot” while some said it was “peely wally”.

Over 2,000 people participated in the survey led by Li Wei, a professor at Birkbeck College, University of London.

“The most frequently used words describe the personal experience of drinking tea rather than the taste,” The Sun Thursday quoted Wei as saying.

Most of the respondents said it was “hot” or just “nice”.

Philippines’ Aquino set for landslide win: poll

Manila, April 29: The son of late Philippine democracy heroine Corazon Aquino appears headed for a landslide victory in next month’s presidential election, a survey said Thursday.

Thirty-nine percent of the respondents said they would vote for Benigno Aquino, two percentage points higher than the previous survey in early April, independent pollster Pulse Asia Inc. said.

“With almost four in 10 Filipino registered voters supporting his presidential bid, Senator Aquino remains the leading presidential contender in the May 2010 elections,” Pulse Asia said.

Afghan support for Karzai govt low, says Pentagon

Washington, April 29: The government of Afghan President Hamid Karzai commands support or sympathy in only a quarter of 121 Afghan areas considered “key” by the US military, a Pentagon report has said.

“The overall assessment indicates that the population sympathizes with or supports the Afghan government in 24 percent (29 of 121) of all Key Terrain and Area of Interest districts,” the quarterly report to Congress said Wednesday.

“The establishment of effective governance is a critical enabler for improving development and security.”

India commissions its first stealth warship

New Delhi, April 29: India Thursday commissioned its first indigenously-built stealth warship with sophisticated features to hoodwink enemy radars and gained entry into a top club of developed countries having such capability.

Inducting ‘INS Shivalik’, the first of the three-ship Project-17 frigates, at the Mumbai-based Mazagon Docks (MDL), Defence Minister A K Antony called it a red letter day for the armed forces.

The 143-metre-long warship, with 6,000-tonne displacement, has “versatile control systems with signature management and radar cross-section reduction features.”

Government’s rice purchase down over 3 p.c.

New Delhi, April 29: Rice procurement by the government in the current marketing year, ending September, 2010, has so far fallen by over three per cent to 26.72 million tonnes on account of lower production.

Food Corporation of India (FCI), the nodal agency for procurement and distribution of foodgrains, and state agencies had procured 27.63 million tonnes of rice in the corresponding period of the previous marketing year, which runs from October to September.

The Centre had procured a record 33.68 million tonnes of rice in the entire 2008—09 marketing year.

Australia plans first plain cigarette packets

Sydney, April 29: Australia said on Thursday it would become the world’s first country to ban logos and branding on cigarette packets, sparking a furious response from the tobacco industry.

Cigarettes will be sold in plain, standardised packages carrying only graphic warnings against smoking from 2012, under new legislation announced by the government aimed at cutting tobacco use.

“Cigarettes are not cool, cigarettes kill people,” said Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. “Therefore the government makes no apology whatsoever for what it’s doing.

Jadeja looks at World Twenty20 to soothe IPL scar

New Delhi, April 29: Ravindra Jadeja, who missed IPL 2010 after being banned by the tournament organisers for trying to negotiate a contract outside the player auction, wants to put the disappointment behind him and focus on the World Twenty20.

“There is no point in looking back, at the moment my focus is on the ICC World Twenty20. I didn’t play cricket for 45 days, there was frustration but I’m keeping my fingers crossed now. It hurts when you see your colleagues playing and you are practising at home,” Jadeja told the Indian Express.

Search for life to shape future space exploration

Washington, April 29: The search for life will be a key part of future space exploration, a scientist involved in reviewing scientific endeavours in space said Wednesday.

Steve Squyres, a scientist at Cornell University who has been a key researcher on the Mars rover project, said an ongoing once-a-decade review of solar system
science to recommend projects to NASA has developed a long-list of potential projects focussed on the search for life in space.

“Astrobiology is really central to what we should be doing next in exploration,” he told reporters.

One killed as bomb targets Bangladesh concert

Dhaka, April 29: Bangladeshi police have arrested four people after one man was killed and four injured by a hand-made bomb thrown at spectators watching a music concert, police said Thursday.

The device was thrown late Wednesday into a 300-strong crowd at a concert in Benapole on the country’s western border to celebrate Bengali New Year, which falls in April, local police chief Aslam Khan told AFP.

“One young man aged around 25 years died in the blast. At least four others were injured but not seriously,” he said.

Afghans protest death of lawmaker’s relative

Kabul, April 29: Hundreds of people protested Thursday in the streets of eastern Afghanistan after a military raid resulted in the death of an Afghan lawmaker’s brother-in-law.

Safiya Sidiqi, the member of parliament whose brother-in-law was killed, said that about 100 NATO soldiers stormed her home, near the city of Jalalabad, about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. NATO has not yet commented on the death, or confirmed whether its soldiers were involved in the raid.

New Delhi, April 29: Dinesh Karthik, India’s reserve wicket-keeper at the World Twenty20, believes the team’s powerful batting and flexibility provided by the presence of allrounders will be a major asset in the Caribbean.

India will be missing the services of the injured opener Virender Sehwag but still have some of the finest limited-overs batsmen in their line-up, including Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni.
