Yogi claims of surviving without food for decades

Ahmedabad, April 29: A team of military doctors backed by country’s National Defence Research Centre is studying an 83-year-old holy man who claims to have spent seven decades surviving without food or water.

The long-haired and bearded yogi, Prahlad Jani, has been sealed in a hospital in the western city of Ahmedabad where he is under 24-hour observation by 30 doctors and will be subjected to a series of medical tests.

High alert in Kolkata after terror warning

New Delhi, April 29: Based on intelligence inputs, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday issued a terror alert for Kolkata.

The specific alert, which has been sent to the West Bengal Police, points to heightened activity of sleeper cells of some terrorists groups in the eastern metropolis.

As per reports, Subash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kalighat Kali Mandir and 24 Parganas, are the possible targets.

Nokia to launch X2 phone – website

Mumbai, April 29: Top mobile phone maker Nokia is set to launch a new phone called the X2, photos posted on the firm’s Web site showed.

Details of the phone were not immediately available, but the pictures showed it has a 5-megapixel camera.

The firm declined to comment on the photos.

All Marathi leaders in Delhi are ‘cowards’: Thackeray

Mumbai, April 29: Former Union Finance Minister C D Deshmukh was the only Marathi leader in Delhi with self-respect, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray has said.

C D Deshmukh, who quit his post to register his protest against the idea of not letting Mumbai be a part of a separate Marathi-speaking state of Maharashtra, was the only Marathi (leader) in Delhi to show self-respect and all others turned out to be cowards, Thackeray said.

US drone found in Mosul arms depot

Mosul, April 29: Iraqi military forces have discovered an unmanned aerial vehicle, belonging to the US Army, among a cache of weapons and explosives in a depot in western Mosul.

“A force from the third division of the Iraqi army found on Wednesday a US unmanned aerial vehicle in a stockpile of weapons and explosives in al-Yarmouk neighborhood in western Mosul,” a military source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The operation was carried out after the army received intelligence on the ammunition storage, which also contained a number of bombs and light weapons, the source added.

3.7 lakh complaints against police on rights abuse

New Delhi, April 29: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) got over 370,000 complaints against the police force related to human rights abuse in the last 10 years most of them from Uttar Pradesh, a document of the rights body has revealed.

According to the available documents, the NHRC registered 377,216 complaints against the police.

“Among the complaints registered with the commission until March 31, 2010, those relating to police are the highest. Those pertaining to service matters is also quite high,” an NHRC official said.

Lightning kills five in Tripura

Agartala, April 29: Five people, including two children, were killed and 11 injured in lightning strikes in different parts of Tripura, officials said Thursday.

Eight-year-old Rajiv Bhoumij and his six-year-old sister Sunimalal died on the spot and their parents suffered burns in the incident in west Tripura district’s Bishalgarh block Wednesday night. The family was sleeping when lightning struck, an official said.

Besides, a woman was killed in Teliamura in west Tripura and two youths died in Kanchanpur in north Tripura. Nine more people were injured in these incidents.

Dr Ambedkar’s statue desecrated in Agra; tension grips

Agra, April 29: Tension prevailed in Shahganj area of the Taj city after a bust of the architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar, was found desecrated this morning. According to police, some anti-social elements threw a white substance on the statue of the leader at Ramnagar Puliya last night.

A mob of locals took to the streets and staged demonstration in protest.

The agitators were seeking action against the guilty.

Meanwhile, police have been deployed for the maintenance of law and order.

Ford India appoints N Raja as Vice President

New Delhi, April 29: Ford India today announced the appointment of N Raja as Vice President, Sales, with effect from April 1. He replaces Timothy Tucker, who was appointed President and CEO, Ford Japan, a company statement said.

Mr Raja will report directly to Ford India, Executive Director (Marketing, Sales & Service) Nigel Wark.

Food inflation eases;fuel prices continue to rise

New Delhi, April 29: India’s annual food price inflation eased in mid-April, but fuel price inflation quickened maintaining an upside pressure on the wholesale price index that could prompt further monetary tightening by the central bank.

The food price index rose 16.61 percent in the 12 months to April 17, lower than an annual rise of 17.65 percent in the previous week, government data showed on Thursday.

The fuel price index rose an annual 12.69 percent, marginally higher than the previous week’s reading of 12.45 percent.

Three killed in road mishap

Jaipur, April 29: Three persons, including a couple, were today killed when a car in which they were travelling had a head-on collision with a truck at village Rawaliya, about 14 km away from Chittorgarh, police said. The couple hailing from Tamil Nadu were on their way to Kwaja Moinuddin Chisti dargha at Ajmer when the mishap occurred.

All the three bodies have been taken to Chittorgarh hospital for post-mortem. The deceased were yet to be identified.

Pakistan Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud is alive: ISI

London/Islamabad, April 29: Pakistan Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud, who was thought to have been killed in a US drone attack early this year, is alive and “basically OK”, claimed a senior ISI official.

The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency official told The Guardian: “He (Mehsud) is alive… “He had some wounds but he is basically OK.”

Mehsud was believed to have died in a drone strike in South Waziristan in January. Though a Pakistani minister had then said that the Taliban chief had been killed, his death was not confirmed by either US or Pakistani intelligence.

PM emphasises need for Nepal political parties to join hands

Thimphu, April 29: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday emphasised the need for all political parties in Nepal to sink their differences and come together to push the peace process as he met his Nepalese counterpart Madhav Kumar Nepal here.

Singh and Nepal met on the sidelines of the SAARC Summit during which they held detailed discussions on the status of the peace process in Nepal, including the redrafting of the Constitution.

‘Pakistan moves 100,000 troops from border with India’

Washington, April 29: Pakistan has moved 100,000 troops from its borders with India, thinning the lines, to bolster its campaign against Taliban and other militants on its restive border with Afghanistan, the Pentagon said today.

The mass shifting of troops is an acknowledgement of the fact that terrorism and internal insurgency were posing more threat to Pakistan now, the Pentagon said in a report to the US Congress.

‘Arrested woman diplomat had no access to classified material’

New Delhi, April 29: The government today said that the Indian woman diplomat arrested on charge of spying for Pakistan did not have access to highly classified material and investigations in the matter are continuing.

“The position occupied by the official did not involve access to highly classified material. The official is now cooperating with us in our inquiries,” Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur said in a suo motu statement in the Lok Sabha.

Ash has bail out plan for Vipul Shah

Mumbai, April 29: Neither Aishwarya nor Akshay Kumar have any dates to spare to shoot a song for Vipul Shah’s “Action Replayy”. The filmmaker agrees that his stars have a genuine problem, but he is not ready to release the movie without that number.

To bail Shah out, Aishwarya has suggested that he should fly down with his unit to London. She would fly from Cannes to London and shoot the song with Akshay in night shifts when the actor wouldn’t be shooting for “Patiala House”.
