UN promotes illicit affairs: Iran first lady

Tehran, April 29: The wife of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has accused Western countries of using the United Nations to promote illicit affairs, the official IRNA news agency reported Wednesday.

“Westerners exploit the United Nations structure to promote illicit affairs,” Azam-ol-Sadat Farahi told a conference of Muslim women thinkers on Tuesday without elaborating.

“The family, which is the main pillar of every society, has collapsed in the West and they are seeking to extend their problem to the Islamic world by spreading decadent schemes,” she said.

Saas-bahu disputes are no grounds for divorce

Mumbai, April 29: The traditional saas-bahu altercations are no grounds to divorce your wife, the Bombay high court told Andheri resident Amar Mehta (name changed), 45.

In an order passed on Wednesday, the court refused to grant divorce to the businessman who said that his wife did not respect his parents and forced them to move out of a joint family. The court was of the view that the discord actually was between Amar’s mother and his wife Neha, 42.

Ahmadinejad applies for US visa

New York, April 29: Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad has applied for a US visa to participate in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference to be held here from May 3, the American ambassador to the UN has said.

“My understanding is that as of today he has filed an application for a visa,” Susan Rice said on Wednesday.

The review conference is held every five years and will be attended by more than 30 foreign ministers.

Three grenade attacks in Assam, no casualties

Guwahati, April 29: Militants Thursday lobbed grenades on police in Assam’s North Cachar Hills district but there were no casualties, polivr said.

All the attacks took place in Haflong, the district headquarters.

Two grenades were lobbed at a police station while another was hurled at a police team patrolling near a school.

‘There were no casualties. All the grenades missed their targets,’ a police official said.

The identity of the attackers was not immediately known.

BJP to meet Jharkhand governor at 7 p.m

New Delhi/Ranchi, April 29The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will meet Jharkhand Governor M.O.H. Farook Thursday evening to inform him of its decision to withdraw support to the Shibu Soren government in the state, senior leader Gopinath Munde said in New Delhi.

Munde had told reporters in New Delhi that the BJP delegation would meet the governor at 5 p.m. but Raj Bhavan sources in Ranchi said the meeting has been deferred to later in the evening at about 7 p.m.

‘CRPF committed most offences among paramilitary forces’

New Delhi, April 29: The Central Reserve Police Force has earned the dubious distinction of having the highest number of criminal offences registered against its personnel as compared to other Central Paramilitary forces last year.

According to latest data from the Home Ministry, a highest of 45 cases were registered against CRPF personnel for allegedly committing crimes as against 25 by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and 13 by Border Security Force (BSF) in 2009.

New Delhi, April 29: The electronic voting machines (EVMs) used in India are vulnerable to fraud, and it is important for votes to be counted in a manner that can be seen and verified, a group of experts said Thursday.

In a collaborative study, a team of Indian and international experts has revealed that even brief access to the voting machines can allow criminals to alter election results.

Rowdy killed in encounter

Virudhunagar (TN), April 29: Two days after he had hacked a head constable to death, an alleged rowdy was shot dead in an encounter at Tuticorin district today, police said.

Acting on a tip off that the man was hiding in Kuruvelam forest, a police team was sent to arrest him but he tried to hack a policeman, who sighted him behind a bush and tried to nab him, IGP Krishnamoorthy told reporters here.

The constable opened two rounds in self defence and the rowdy Kumar, who suffered bullet injuries, died on way to the hospital, the officer said.

Sehwag’s loss won’t be decisive: Manjrekar

New Delhi, April 29: Former Test batsman Sanjay Manjrekar feels Virender Sehwag’s absence will not affect India’s chances in the T20 World Cup as they have enough back-up to fill up the explosive opener’s place.

Sehwag was dropped due to a shoulder injury sustained during the recently-concluded Indian Premier League and was replaced by Tamil Nadu opener Murali Vijay, who had a successful stint with the Chennai Super Kings.

Three killed in road mishap in Rajasthan

Jaipur, April 29: Three persons, including a couple, were today killed when a car in which they were travelling had a head-on collision with a truck at village Rawaliya, about 14 km away from Chittorgarh, police said.

The couple hailing from Tamil Nadu were on their way to Kwaja Moinuddin Chisti dargha at Ajmer when the mishap occurred.

All the three bodies have been taken to Chittorgarh hospital for post-mortem.

The deceased were yet to be identified.
