IPL III: Sachin wins toss, asks KXIP to bat first

Mumbai, March 30: Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar won the toss and asked Kings XI Punjab to bat first in an Indian Premier League match here today.

Stand-in skipper Mahela Jayawardene leads the Punjab side which brought in Australian Shaun Marsh in place of regular captain Kumar Sangakkara, who is serving a one-match ban for the side’s repeated slow over-rate offence.

Maoists kill villager in Midnapore

Midnapore (WB), March 30: In yet another killing in the ‘jangalmahal’ area, suspected Maoists today shot dead a villager at Salboni in West Midnapore district.

The body of Binod Mahato was recovered by joint security personnel from Kalsibhanga jungle, with his hands tied to the back side and bullet holes in head, police said.

Mahato had earlier received threats from Maoists who accused him of being a police informer, police said.

Plea to reduce vacations of High courts dismissed

Kochi, March 30: Kerala High Court today dismissed a petition seeking to reduce the vacations of courts.

Dismissing a PIL by one Geroge of Ernakulam, a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice J Chalemeswar and Justice K Balakrishnan said whether working days of high courts should be increased or vacations reduced are all matters of policy, which had to be considered by authority including, the Centre, Supreme Court and the high courts.

The bench also said that by exercising constitutional powers, the court cannot issue directions to the rule making authority to frame or amend rules.

Citizen has no fundamental right to sell liquor:SC

New Delhi, March 30: The Supreme Court has ruled that a citizen has no fundamental right to engage in the sale of liquor as government alone has the right to regulate the business in public interest.

A bench of Justices R V Raveendran and Surinder Singh Nijjar said the government also has the right to consider grant of licenses as per the rules in force and not at the time when the applications are made for running the business.

No SC relief to Paramount Airways

New Delhi, March 30: The Supreme court today declined to give any interim relief to Paramount Airways whose three planes out of a functional fleet of four has been grounded following deregistration by civil aviation sector regulator DGCA.

A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices Deepak Verma and B S Chauhan disallowed the plea of the South-based airlines against the orders of the Delhi High Court which had dismissed its plea challenging the directions by DGCA.

Aijaz shot dead in encounter

Lucknow, March 30: Notorious criminal Aijaz carrying a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his head was killed in an encounter in Gudamba area here this afternoon.

Aijaz, an active member of the Salim gang, had escaped from police custody while he was being taken to jail last year, Inspector General of Police, Crime, GP Sharma said here.

Salim gang is active in western districts of the state and is allegedly involved in several heinous crimes, Sharma added.

Plea to change dress code of lawyers in Kerala

Kochi, March 30: A petitioner today approached the Kerala High Court seeking a change in the dress code of lawyers.

According to the petitioner, Vincent Panikulangara, a lawyer himself, it becomes very difficult for lawyers to wear the black coats when temperatures rise.

There are about 25,000 lawyers including 5,000 women, practising in various courts across the state. About 5,000 lawyers, including 1,000 women, practice in the High Court, where court halls are air-conditioned.

Somalian pirates hijack Gujarat dhows with 100 sailors

Ahmedabad/New Delhi, March 30: Nearly 100 Indian sailors have been captured and seven dhows seized by pirates off Somalia’s coast, a shipping association today said.

“Around Saturday afternoon we got information that seven of our vessels were hijacked by Somalian pirates in mid-sea,” Kutch Vahanvati Association (KVA) president Kasam Ali Bholim told.

“Over 80-100 crew members of these vessels have been captured. We have already approached the port authorities and the Director General Shipping in this regard,” he said.

Court issues NBW against blasts accused

Kochi, March 30: A special CBI court, which is the designated court of the National Investigation Agency, today issued non-bailable arrest warrants against two absconding persons who are accused in the 2006 Kozhikode twin bomb blasts case.

The warrants were issued against Mohammed Ashar and K P Yusuf, who hail from Kannur.

The NIA is probing various terror-related cases in Kerala. There are nine accused in the case of which five have been arrested so far.

AIADMK functionary sets himself afire

Erode (TN), March 30: A local AIADMK functionary allegedly set himself afire today as he was upset over party’s performance in Pennagaram assembly bye-election, police said.

50-year-old Thangavel suffered severe burns after he poured petrol over his body and set himself ablaze in front of his house.

He was admitted to the Government hospital where his condition was stated to be critical.

Trains cancelled and rescheduled due to shutdown

Guwahati, March 30: The North-east Frontier Railway today announced cancellation and rescheduling of trains in view of a shutdown called by some organisations in the Rabha Hasong area in lower Assam.

In view of the shutdown, running of trains in the Kamakhya-New Bongaigaon section via Goalpara town have been either cancelled or diverted via Rangiya, an official release said here.

While two pairs of passenger trains, Guwahati-New Bongaigaon passenger and the corresponding train will remain cancelled, the Danapur-Kamakhya Capital Express will be diverted via Rangiya.

HC asks if there is probe against cops who tied accused

Mumbai, March 30: The Bombay High Court today sought a reply from the state as to whether any inquiry has been initiated against police officers who allegedly handcuffed and chained a prisoner when he was being shifted to another jail.

Majid Akhtar Shaikh, an accused, has filed a petition alleging that when he and some others were taken from Taloja prison (Navi Mumbai) to Aurangabad prison last year, their hands were chained to chairs during the 7-hour journey.

Indian restaurant owner found guilty of trafficking in UK

London, March 30: The owners of the prestigious Rajput Indian restaurant in Harrogate have been found guilty of a conspiracy to traffic their own chefs from India into the UK and exploit them for financial gain.

Chef Shahnawaz Ali Khan, once lauded in press reviews for his skills, his brother Raza Ali Khan and their mother Parveen Khan were found guilty of trafficking up to nine members of staff, following a three month trial at Leeds Crown Court.

Police gave bodies to private medical colleges: Raj govt

Jaipur, March 30: Facing allegations that its police was selling unclaimed bodies, Rajasthan government on Tuesday admitted that 15 such bodies were given to private medical colleges and hospitals without following proper legal procedure in Sriganganagar, about 600 km from here.

It, however, maintained that there was no evidence of “selling” of these bodies. Seven police personnel, including four inspectors, have been chargesheeted departmentally in this connection. Three inspectors have also been chargesheeted.

Pakistan approves $1.91 bn deal for new N-plants

Islamabad, March 30: Energy-hungry Pakistan has approved a USD 1.91 billion inter-governmental framework agreement with its all-weather ally China for financing two new nuclear power plants, a media report said here on Tuesday.

The federal cabinet, in its last meeting, ratified the agreement whereby China is expected to provide 82 per cent of the total financing of USD 1.91 billion to Pakistan as a soft loan for 20 years, with an eight-year grace period.

New Delhi, March 30: Describing as “shocking” the death sentence to 17 Indians in UAE, government today said it will ensure all possible help to them, including legal assistance, to file an appeal in a higher court.

Indian Consulate has already sought access to these Indians, sentenced to death by Sharjah’s Shariah court for killing a Pakistani man and injuring three others in an alleged fight over illegal alcohol business.

Failure of AP government: BJP

Hyderabad, March 30: While curfew is still on in communal violence-hit areas of Hyderabad, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday said the clashed are a result of the failure if Andhra Pradsh government.

“Muslim fundamentalist organizations like MIM and others objected to putting up of hoarding of Shri Ram and raised buntings on the eve of Hanuman Jayanti and started attacks on temples, shops, houses and targeted even Gaushala,” read a BJP press statement issued by National Spokesperson and MP Prakash Javadekar.

Hyderabad riots: Blame game begins in Congress

Hyderabad, March 30: In a major embarrassment for the Congress government in Andhra Pradesh, a section of its leaders from Telangana have openly charged their own party colleagues from two other regions of being involved in the communal riots in Hyderabad.

Congress MP from Nizamabad Madhu Yashki Goud has said that the riots were a conspiracy by leaders from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions as those opposing the demand for statehood to Telangana had been warning Muslims that communal tensions would rise in the separate state.

Big Bang experiment on; LHC smashes protons, record

London, March 30: A new era began for the scientific community on Tuesday as the much delayed ‘Big Bang’ experiment kicked off successfully after a delay of 18-months. The protons have been successfully collided inside the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva and the experiment has been declared successful.

“This is physics in the making, the beginning of a new era, we have collisions at 7 TeV (teralectronvolts),” said Paola Catapano, a scientist and spokeswoman at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, referring to the record energy levels achieved.

Five get death for Haryana honour killing

Karnal, March 30: In a historic judgment, a Session Court in Karnal on Tuesday sentenced five members of Khap Panchayat to death for the ‘honour killing’ of a couple who married despite opposition from the community.

Manoj and Babli were kidnapped and brutally murdered, by family members of Babli, in June 2007 for going against the wishes of the all powerful caste council Khap Panchayat.

The Panchayat was against their marriage as Manoj and Babli were from the same sub-caste, hence siblings as per the beliefs.

Big win for DMK in Pennagaram bypoll

Chennai, March 30 (IANS) The ruling DMK Tuesday swept the bypolls for the Pennagaram assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu held March 27 by a big margin.

Party candidate P.N.P. Inbasekaran trounced his nearest rival PMK candidate G.K.M. Tamilkumaran by a margin of over 36,000 votes. In the four-cornered contest, AIADMK and DMDK were also-rans.

The bypoll saw 84 percent polling. From the beginning, DMK was in the lead with a comfortable margin.

DMK leader and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said: “It is victory given by the Tamil Nadu people.”
