Gold falls most in seven weeks on weak global cues

New Delhi, March 25: Gold prices tumbled by Rs 170 to a seven-week low of Rs 16,450 per ten grams in the bullion market here today on hectic selling triggered by negative global cues.

Standard gold and ornaments, plunged by Rs 170 each to Rs 16,450 and Rs 16,300 per ten grams, respectively. The metal has lost Rs 320 in the last three trading sessions.

Sovereign also weakened, shedding Rs 50 to trade at Rs 13,950 per eight-gram piece.

Sensex sluggish in afternoon trade, Bharti outperforms

Mumbai, March 25: A benchmark index for Indian equities Thursday was trading on a sluggish note in afternoon trade, ruling 18 points higher than its previous close, even as Bharti Airtel’s scrip rose on news that its overseas acquisition was almost complete.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,458.51 points, was ruling at 17,469.46 points, 18.44 points or 0.11 percent higher than its previous close at 17,451.02 points.

These Naiks are real Nayaks

Editors Guild condemns attack on TV channel

Hyderabad, March 25: The Editors Guild of India has strongly condemned the attack on the ABN-Andhra Jyothi news channel by activists of Praja Rajyam party here on March 22.

Expressing its dismay over the attack, the guild said in a press release today that such attacks on newspaper and TV channel offices were deplorable and cannot be justified in any way.

One lakh white cards to be scrapped in city

Hyderabad, March 25: In order to streamline ration cards in the city, the Civil Supplies department has decided to weed out nearly one lakh white ration cards in the next few days. But the move has already triggered widespread concern that genuine cases might come under the axe of the authorities.

After completing a door-todoor survey, the officials found that out of seven lakh cardholders in the city, one lakh families were ineligible but had been drawing groceries.

TDP criticism of Rosaiah irks Congress

Maoists kill three cops near AOB

Vizianagaram, March 25: Three policemen were killed and six others severely injured during an exchange of fire in Tojango forest area of Gumma block of Gajapati district (Orissa) close to Andhra-Orissa Border in the wee hours of Wednesday.

The Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Volunteer Force (DVF) of Orissa were combing the forest area when Maoists started firing at the police party.

In the exchange of fire that ensued for 45 minutes, Deepak Senbai and Balaram Pradhani belonging to the Special Operation Group besides Sanjay Tarky, belonging to the DVF were killed.

Woman gives birth to quadruplets

Hyderabad, March 25: A 24-year-old woman has given birth to quadruplets on Monday last (March 22) at Maternity Hospital, Petlaburj of which one infant expired due to low birth weight while the other three are in acute medical care in the ICU of Niloufer Hospital.

The remaining infants, two boys and one girl, are struggling with severe respiratory distress and hospital doctors have kept their fingers crossed on chances of recovery.

Maoists set up camps in Nallamala

Ongole, March 25: Facing the heat from paramilitary forces on the Andhra-Chhattisgarh border, Maoists appear to be making a tactical retreat, to their once impregnable fortress — Nallamala forest.

Students ‘force’ NIT Director to step down

Warrangal, March 25: Students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) campus, who have been agitating for the past two days demanding the resignation of its Director YV Rao for allegedly indulging in large-scale corruption, managed to take his resignation letter from him here on Wednesday. They also forced him to request NIT Chairman Deekshitulu to accept his resignation.

But late in the night, YV Rao was quoted as saying that his resignation, submitted under duress, wasn’t valid.

Lack of credibility keeps TTDPF inactive

Hyderabad, March 25: Though Telugu Desam’s Telangana leaders formed a separate forum within the party to wage a fight for Telangana State, the forum has remained non-functional so far.

The Telangana Telugu Desam Party Forum (TTDPF), which was officially launched on March 5, has not taken up any concrete action plan to continue its `fight’ for T-State.

Several party MLAs from the region, including TTDPF convener N Janardhan Reddy, maintained silence when asked why the forum was inactive. They neither refute the charges nor try to counter the argument.

HMDA’s green building manual released

Hyderabad, March 25: Union Minister of State for Urban Development Saugata Ray released the manual of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority’s environmental building guidelines at the fifth session of the World Urban Forum held at Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday.

The first copy was presented by the minister to Dr Anna Tibaijuka, Under Secretary General of the UN and Executive Director of UN-HABITAT in the presence of HMDA commissioner BP Acharya.

Hyderabad, March 25: Depressed over the delay in creation of separate Telangana, which shattered his dreams of getting a job that matched his qualification, a 27-year-old ended his life at Ibrahimpatnam near here on Wednesday morning.

Narala Tirumalesh, who completed his engineering three years ago, hanged himself to death from the ceiling fan in his house at Uppariguda in Ibrahimpatnam.

Stop giving vaccine for cervix cancer: CPI

Hyderabad, March 25: CPI State secretary K Narayana Wednesday wanted the State Government to stop administering the vaccine preventing cervix cancer, as there were reports that four tribal women died after they were administered the vaccine, which was supplied free of cost by the Gates Foundation.

Narayana demanded the State Government to constitute an expert committee to unravel the truths behind the deaths of four tribal women and wanted the officials to stop administering the vaccine till the report of experts committee was out.

Madras HC bars telecast of clippings on Kalki

Chennai, March 25: The Madras High Court today restrained about 40 private TV channels operating in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, including Sun TV Network, from telecasting any video clippings relating to Kalki Bhagawan, his son and other family members, till March 31.

The interim injunction was granted subject to certain conditions to protect the alleged victims as they had been projected in an identifiable manner, Justice G Rajasuriya observed. It would also amount to violation of human rights, the judge said.

Reckless driving snuffs out 5 lives

Hyderabad, March 25: It was rash and negligent driving which claimed the lives of five persons, including two youngsters, late Tuesday night.

In the accident on the Greenlands flyover, which left two youths dead and one battling for life, the impact was such that the bike skidded for more than 100 yards and when the vehicle crashed into the road-divider, two of the youngsters rebounded to the other side of the road.
