Seven injured in clashes in Karnataka

Belgaum/Haveri (Kar), March 01: At least seven persons, including two police personnel, were injured in separate clashes over Holi celebrations in Belgaum and Haveri districts today, police said.

Heated exchange of words culminated in clashes between members belonging to two communities over Holi celebrations near a place of worship belonging to minority community in Gokak, about 60 km from Belgaum, in which five persons were injured.

Five persons drown in Orissa after celebrating Holi

Bhubaneswar, March 01: Five persons drowned in Orissa today while taking a bath after celebrating Holi, which was observed amid gaiety and camaraderie across the state.

People from segments of society splashed colours, embraced and greeted each other and exchanged sweets. Many foreign tourists also celebrated along with locals at Puri.

Three persons drowned in Ib river on the outskirts of Sundargarh, 100 km from Rourkela, as they slipped into deep water while taking a bath after Holi, police said.

Duo shot at over poll-related rivalry

Panna (MP), March 01: Two persons were today shot at by a rival group at Saheria village, about 10 kms from here, following an old poll-related rivalry, a senior officer said.

The incident occurred this evening when accused Shiv Singh and Lallan Singh shot Savant Singh (22) and Rajendra Singh (26) following an old poll-related rivalry, Sub Division Officer of Police (SDOP) N N Jharia told PTI.

The seriously injured persons were admitted in the Panna District Hospital, he said, adding a case has been registered in this regard.

Woman sets herself ablaze over husband’s drinking habit

Firozabad (UP), March 01: Unhappy over her husband’s drinking habit a woman here allegedly set herself ablaze and grabbed her husband, leading to the death of both of them, police said today.

After a heated argument with her husband Shyam Sunder over his drinking habit, Geeta sprinkled kerosene and set herself afire in Palampur village under Sirsaganj police station last night, police said today.

Both of them were rushed to a hospital by a neighbour but died on the way, police added.

CPI(M) worker shot at by suspected Maoists

Purulia(WB), March 01: A CPI(M) worker was shot at by suspected Maoists in West Bengal’s Purulia district this evening, police said.

Kalu Sona Mondal, the CPI(M) worker was having a conversation with some people in a tea stall at Kherkridih village when four suspected Maoists came in two motorcycles and fired at him at around 6 pm, they said.

Mondal was rushed to Purulia Sadar Hospital and his condition is stated to be serious.

He is the younger brother of Yudhistir Mondal, the CPI(M) panchayat member of Balarampur.

Security for two industrialists after threat calls

Kolkata, March 01: The West Bengal government today provided security cover for two city-based industrialists after they complained to the police of receiving ransom calls.

“You have seen on television that some individuals have received ransom calls. Two complaints about the ransom calls are lodged with the city police,” Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen told reporters here.

Sen declined to name the complainants or specify any detail about them, but said steps have been taken to provide them security.

Militants destroy NATO fuel tanker in Pakistan

Islamabad, March 01: Suspected Islamist militants in Pakistan’s restive northwestern region Monday torched a tanker carrying fuel for US and NATO troops in Afghanistan, police said.

The attack took place on the outskirts of Peshawar, the capital of the North West Frontier Province, police officer Amanat Ali said.

Troops exchanged fire with an unknown number of attackers for more than hour after the attack, Ali said. One militant was injured, two were arrested and others managed to flee, the officer said.

Hijacker of Indian plane to Kandahar nabbed again in Dhaka

Dhaka, March 01: One of the five Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militants, arrested in Bangladesh last week, was convicted and jailed in India for involvement in hijacking of an Indian Airlines plane to Kandahar in December 1999.

Nannu Mian alias Belal Mandol alias Billal, who was arrested here Saturday along with four other militants, returned home recently after serving 10 years in a prison in Guwahati in India.

Israeli dual citizens to be banned from entering UAE: Dubai police chief

Abu Dhabi, March 01: People travelling to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who are suspected of having Israeli citizenship will not be allowed to enter the country regardless of what passport they hold, Dubai police chief Dahi Khalfan Tamim said Monday.

Tamim made the remarks on the sidelines of an international security conference in the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi, The National, a local English daily, reported on its website.

Feb manufacturing growth at 20-month high: PMI

Mumbai, March 01: India’s manufacturing industry in February grew at its fastest pace in 20 months, expanding for the third month thanks to expanding output and new orders, a survey showed.

The HSBC Markit Purchasing Managers’ Index , based on a survey of 500 companies, rose to 58.5 in February, its strongest reading since June 2008, from 57.7 in January.

A reading above 50 means activity is expanding.

Oil rises above $80 on copper, bullish data

London, March 01: Oil extended gains to rise above $80 a barrel on Monday, lifted by a rally in the copper price, a steady US dollar and bullish global economic data.

US crude for April delivery rose 79 cents to $80.45 by 1002 GMT, after having climbed by as much as 96 cents. On Friday, the contract settled up $1.49 at $79.66 and posted its biggest monthly percentage gain since May 2009.

London Brent crude rose 76 cents to $78.35.

Tel Aviv, March 01: Tel Aviv is seriously angered by letters from Spanish children urging Israel to ‘stop killing Palestinians’ and has accused Madrid of favoring ‘anti-Semitism’ in schools.

Israel expressed ‘distress’ on Sunday after its embassy in Madrid was flooded with hundreds of letters from schoolchildren protesting Tel Aviv’s conduct toward the Palestinians.

One letter directed at Israel’s envoy in Madrid, Rafael Shotz, asked, “How many Palestinians have you murdered today?”

Bomb kills NATO service member, 4 Afghan civilians

Kandahar, March 01: A suicide car bomber attacked a NATO convoy crossing a bridge outside the southern Afghan city of Kandahar on Monday, tossing a military vehicle into a ravine and killing one NATO service member and four Afghan civilians, officials said.

The attacker waited in a station wagon taxi near the bridge, which NATO troops regularly check for explosives, said Inhamullah Khan, an Afghan army official at the bombing site.

Berlin, March 01: Overindulging in “energy shot” drinks can have consequences, warn consumer safety organisations. The shots are more concentrated per litre than standard energy drinks, warns the consumer centre of Saxony-Anhalt in Germany.

That increases the risks of consuming large portions of caffeine in a short time, which can damage the heart and circulatory system.

Combining large quantities of those drinks with alcohol and physical exertion, like sport or long stretches of dancing, could be even more dangerous.

‘Normal’ blood sugar levels may not be safe for baby, mum

Washington, March 01: Two to three times more pregnant women may soon be diagnosed and treated for gestational diabetes.

These findings are based on new norms for determining risky blood sugar levels for the mother and her unborn baby.

“As result of this study, more than 16 percent of the entire population of pregnant women qualified as having gestational diabetes,” said Boyd Metzger, professor of metabolism and nutrition at Feinberg School of Medicine who led the study.

“Before, between five to eight percent of pregnant women were diagnosed with this,” added Metzger.
