Will seek access to IC-814 plotter’

New Delhi, March 02: External Affairs Minister SM Krishna Tuesday said that India will seek access to IC-814 hijacking plotter Belal Mandol, who is in custody in Bangladesh, if his terror links are proven.

Speaking to reporters in the capital, Krishna said, “We certainly will get in touch with the government of Bangladesh and try to what to find out what the position is. If the identity of the person is the same as that of the one we are looking for, we will take up the matter.”

Most heroin transiting through India bound for Europe: Rpt

Washington, March 02: Seizures of heroin made in various parts of India in the recent past indicate that most of the drug transiting through the country is bound for Europe, a US report has said.

“Most heroin transiting India appeared bound for Europe. Seizures of Southwest Asian heroin made in New Delhi and Mumbai tend to reinforce this assessment,” the latest US report on International Narcotics Trade released by the State Department said.

Chile troops tackle quake looters

Concepcion, March 02: Chile called for international aid on Monday as the anguished calls of trapped quake survivors pierced the rubble and police had to arrest 160 looters for defying overnight curfews.

Troops deployed alongside police in Concepcion, the country’s second city and the worst-hit urban area, while the toll from Saturday’s 8.8-magnitude earthquake and the resulting tsunami that swept coastal towns rose to 711.

Appearance of article is atrocious

New Delhi, March 02: Exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen on Tuesday said the appearance of an article in a Karnataka newspaper purportedly written by her, which triggered violent protests in Shimoga and Hassan towns, is a “deliberate attempt to malign” her and “misuse” her writings to create disturbance in society.

Ms. Nasreen said in a statement made available that she never penned any article for a newspaper in Karnataka.

AI staffer arrested for molesting 9-year-old girl

Kolkata, March 02: An Air-India employee was arrested and another detained early today for allegedly molesting a nine-year-old girl at NSC Bose International airport here.

The police said AI baggage handler Ahamed Reza molested the girl when she came to the airport at about 1.30 am to catch a flight.

Another baggage handler, Binoy Sanyasi was detained for questioning, the police said.

The incident took place when the girl was waiting after luggage checking in the airport, the police said.

Shivendra’s three-match ban reduced to two

New Delhi, March 02: Shivendra Singh, who was suspended for three matches for ‘deliberately’ hitting a Pakistan player, has got some relief as the three-member inquiry panel announced that Shivendra would serve 2-match suspension instead of three as announced on Monday.

The verdict of the FIH jury means that Shivendra, who scored a goal against Pakistan on Sunday, will miss tonight’s crucial game against Australia and the one against Spain scheduled for Thursday.

Rs.34 lakh looted from SBI parking lot

Greater Noida, March 02: Armed robbers struck at the parking lot of a State Bank of India (SBI) branch Tuesday noon and looted Rs.34 lakh in cash from a petroleum company manager, police in this suburban town said.

Colonel (retd) V.B. Singh, manager of a Bharat Petroleum retail outlet, was going to deposit the cash in the SBI branch near Kailash Hospital when the incident occurred.

He was parking his car around noon when the robbers snatched the cash from him and his assistant, police said.

The manager called the police but the criminals had fled.

Melbourne, March 02: In a fresh incident of violence against Asians in Australia, a Sri Lankan man and his Indian wife were attacked and racially abused by a group of drunken men at their home here.

A group of 25 drunken thugs bashed up 60-year-old Ranjit Sahasranaman, who is married to Indian-origin Agalya Sahasranamn, outside his own home in Carrams Down suburb.

Sahasranaman, a Sri Lankan national, revealed his over two-and-a-half hour ordeal of how he fought back with the thugs till police arrived and dispersed them.

UAE to keep out Israeli visitors with face scans

Dubai, March 02: Following the assassination of a Hamas operative, Dubai police will use voice and face profiling to detect Israelis arriving on foreign passports, the police chief said.

Israelis have always been forbidden from travelling to the UAE on their passports, but dual-nationals could use their alternative passport to enter the country.

Hyderabad Metro Rail to create 50,000 jobs

Hyderabad, March 02: Hyderabad Metro Rail is expected to trigger mammoth economic activity in and around the city and provide employment to about 50,000 people, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah said Monday.

The chief minister, who reviewed the Rs.12,132-crore project at a meeting here, said it would provide employment for about 5,000 engineers and about 45,000 skilled and unskilled workers.

Melbourne, March 02: In a fresh incident of violence against Asians in Australia, a Sri Lankan man and his Indian wife were attacked and racially abused by a group of drunken men at their home here.
