Man detained in lender’s murder

Mumbai, March 27: The Azad Maidan police on Friday detained a man in the murder of moneylender Alpesh Jain on Tuesday. The man had committed robberies in the area where Jain was found dead.

Bhaurao Bhawale, senior inspector, said fingerprints found from the victim’s apartment indicated that more than one person may have been involved in the murder. “We have put 14 men on the job and crime branch is also conducting parallel investigations,” said Bhawale.

Man arrested in Japan’s poisoned dumplings case

Beijing, March 27: Chinese police have arrested a man suspected of poisoning frozen dumplings destined for Japan, in an incident that strained relations between the two countries, state media reported.

Lu Yueting, 36, is suspected of injecting poison into the dumplings while working at a factory in northern China, the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing the security ministry.

Tokyo had been pressing Beijing to investigate the case of the pesticide-tainted frozen dumplings after 10 people fell ill in Japan in January 2008.

Pak’s Md Yousuf to retire from international cricket

Islamabad, March 27: The former captain of Pakistan cricket team Muhammad Yousuf has decided retires from international cricket. Yousuf said he will formally announce his decision in Karachi tomorrow.

Sources said the reason for his retirement was the Pakistan Cricket Board decision to ban him from international cricket for life.

Iraq unable to deal with numerous mass graves

Baghdad, March 27: A senior Iraqi official says Baghdad does not have the means and expertise to deal with the high numbers of mass graves being discovered.

Ayam Sharif, the head of the Department of Terror and Victims at the Ministry of Human Rights, said that 84 mass graves were discovered in the country last year, all of which held victims of the post-Saddam violence that has rent the fabric of the country.

Govt to set up Police Complaint Authority in all UTs

New Delhi, March 27: The Centre on Thursday decided to set up Police Complaint Authority in all Union territories including the national capital which will look into allegations of serious misconduct including death and sexual assault during custody.

“The government decided to set up the Authority at the Union Territory level in pursuance of the Supreme Court’s judgement dated September 22, 2006 on a writ petition filed by former BSF Chief Prakash Singh,” an official spokesman said in a statement.

Saki Naka rape: 4 accused sent to judicial custody

Mumbai, March 27: The four people arrested on charges of raping a 12-year-old schoolgirl from Saki Naka were produced at the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate court on Friday.

The Saki Naka police submitted the statement given by the victim against the nine accused in the complaint, on the basis of which they have been booked. After hearing arguments from both sides the Andheri court sent the accused to judicial custody till April 9.

Gang of 3 held for car thefts across city

Mumbai, March 27: The Kasturba police on Thursday arrested a gang of robbers that was later identified as one specialising in car thefts. They targeted high-end four wheelers in the city. The police nabbed the trio during a nakabandi on Dattapada Road in Borivli (East).

The three were travelling in a Chevrolet Tavera. The officers asked the car to halt for checking. However, the occupants did not pay heed and drove on. The police followed the vehicle and managed to stop it at Rajendra Nagar near Western Express highway.

Student held for murder

Bhubaneswar, March 27: A 22-year-old management student has been arrested for murdering his woman friend after she rejected his proposal of love, police said Saturday.

“We have arrested Rajesh Sethi, an MBA student of the same college Rosalin was studying. He murdered Rosalin after she turned down his love offer. He was held Friday,” Bhubaneswar police commissioner BK Sharma said.

Rosalin Patel, 21, was killed Tuesday. She was an engineering student of a Bhubaneswar-based college.

Encounter between troops, militants in Rajouri forest

Jammu, March 27: Security forces and militants were engaged in a gun battle in a forest area in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir since early morning, police said here.

Acting on intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in Baji Mahal forest in Dharamsal, about 146 kms from here, security forces assisted by police rushed to the area, they said.

As troops were moving in the forest area, militants started firing which was retaliated by them, police said adding, intermittent exchange of firing were going on between the two sides when last reports came in.

Smuggler visited Hong Kong 20 times in a year

Mumbai, March 27: Mustafa Bookwala (40), who was arrested on Wednesday by the Customs for smuggling Rs 2 crore worth memory cards, is a seasoned operator. His passport revealed this. The Customs authorities found that Bookwala travelled to Hong Kong 20 times in a year, which was not normal. Though Customs officials said that all these trips were related to memory card smuggling, Bookwala has said that he did this only on three occasions.

Pakistan recognises terrorism as shared threat with India: US

Washington, March 27: The United States says it’s encouraged by Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts as it believes that Islamabad now recognises terrorism as a “shared threat” with India and other countries.

Security and counter-terrorism efforts were part of the discussion at the first Pakistan-US strategic dialogue here this week “and we will continue our cooperation”, State Department spokesman Philip J. Crowley told reporters Friday.
