Telangana advocate ‘court’s success

Hyderabad, March 27: The counting of votes after the High Court Advocates’ Association elections led to mild tension on the High Court premises here on Friday with Telangana advocates damaging windows of the counting hall protesting lack of transparency.

In the end, an advocate from Telangana D Prakash Reddy was elected president.

Another advocate, Amarnath Goud, also from Telangana was elected vice-president.

The elections were held in the HC Bar Association Building.

Prosecution plea to declare Kasab fugitive dismissed by Pak

Islamabad, March 27: A Pakistani anti-terror court conducting the trial of LeT’s Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and six others accused of involvement in the Mumbai attacks today dismissed the prosecution’s application for naming Ajmal Kasab and Fahim Ansari as “proclaimed offenders” or fugitives.

Judge Malik Muhammad Akram Awan of the Rawalpindi-based court, who is conducting the trial within the Adiala Jail for security reasons, rejected the application a week after hearing arguments by the prosecution and defence lawyers on it.

Markets on a roll; Sensex completes seven-week rally

Mumbai, March 27: Stocks: Markets extended their rally for the seventh week in a row on the Dalal Street, gaining another 67 points, or 0.38 per cent, on sharp rise in healthcare and banking sectors on the back of sustained capital inflow from foreign funds.

Persistent capital inflows and easing of food inflation helped the Sensex to continue its upward march.

The Bombay Stock Exchange 30-share barometer moved in a range of 17,682.94 and 17,337.38 before concluding the week at 17,644.76, a rise of 66.53 points, or 0.38 per cent, over preceding weekend’s close.

Conjoined twins in Bihar set to be separated

Patna, March 27: Subhash Mukhia and his wife Nirmala Devi cannot believe their luck. A well known doctor here has promised the labourers to separate their one-and-half-year-old conjoined twins.

The parents are now hopeful that their daughters Sita and Gita, whose urinary tract and faecal tract are joint, finally have got a chance to get separated and lead normal lives.

“It was a miracle that Ajay Kumar offered to help us,” Subhash, a resident of Bhawanipur village in West Champaran district, about 200 km from here, told media.

Secular challenger hails Iraq election victory

Baghdad, March 27: Former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi said today his secular political alliance is open to bringing any of his rivals into a governing coalition that can restore Iraq’s place in the Arab and Muslim world.

Allawi’s Iraqiya bloc came out the top vote-getter in March 7 parliamentary elections, according to full results released yesterday, edging out his chief rival, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who refused to accept the results and said he will challenge them.

Afridi,Younus have sent ‘letters’, not appeals:PCB

Lahore, March 27: Pakistan Cricket Board today made it clear that they are considering written communications from Shahid Afridi and Younus Khan as “letters” and not appeals against the penalties imposed on them.

The legal advisor of the Board Tafazzul Rizvi said that until yesterday no player, including Afridi and Younus, had filed a proper appeal with the Board and the duo had only outlined their grievances.

Sonal Chauhan walks the ramp in ‘Egyptian style’

New Delhi, March 27: ‘Jannat’ star Sonal Chauhan sashayed down the ramp in a white Egyptian style dress for designer Charu Parasher at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, here today.

The actress, who has won several beauty contests in the past, was initially nervous on the ramp but seemed relaxed after the show.

“My biggest fear while walking the ramp is of tripping over and falling. I have done modelling before but I was still nervous while walking. I am relaxed now,” Sonal told reporters after the show.

South Korea rules out navy ship sunk by North Korea

Seoul, March 27: South Korea on Saturday all but ruled out the chance that North Korea was involved in the sinking of one of its navy vessels near their disputed border.

Initial speculation that North Korea might have sunk the ship had spooked Wall Street on Friday. Share prices dipped partly on geopolitical concerns, and the won dropped against the dollar.

Australian family votes 159 times

Adelaide, March 27: An Australian family says its members voted 159 times in state elections in South Australia to make a point about poor identity checks, a media report said Saturday.

The family, which called itself ‘The Election Team’, claimed it was easy to steal the identities of other voters, an anonymous letter published in the Adelaide Advertiser said.

The letter stated that one of the members was underage but ‘had no difficulty’ in voting 31 times.

FIR against UP SP MLA for torturing man in captivity

Lucknow, March 27: An FIR has been filed against a Samajwadi Party MLA and five others for allegedly keeping a man in captivity and torturing him in Jhansi district, police said here today.

According to the FIR filed yesterday by Mukesh Kumar Yadav at Nawabad police station here, in July last year he sold his car at Rs 10.75 lakh to sister-in-law of SP MLA from Garautha constituency Deep Narain Singh Yadav. However, she did not pay the amount at that time.

Over 20,000 books of a library gutted in fire

Bangalore, March 27: More than 20,000 books were gutted when a fire broke out in a library run by a private trust here in the wee hours today, police said. Two fire tenders took half an hour to douse the flames, they said.

Manjunath, trust owner and a BJP member, in his police complaint alleged that the fire was the handiwork of a JDS candidate, Anjanappa, who is contesting the coming polls to city corporation from Padmanabhanagar ward, where the library is located. Police said investigations were on.

Shahid misses his TV debut

Mumbai, March 27: While bollywood actors are bee lining to debut on small screen, here’s one actor who just missed to realize his dream.

Buzz is that Shahid Kapoor was being considered to be part of an upcoming reality show but the deal fell through. Shahid was being considered to anchor the show along with Priyanka Chopra. But when Priyanka chose to do FEAR FACTOR, the deal did not materialize.

Now, Shahid has to wait till his small screen debut takes off, for the moment the actor is enjoying the company of his dad Pankaj Kapoor who is directing him for the upcoming film MAUSAM.

Sonia to visit her constituency on March 31

Rae Bareli, March 27: Congress president Sonia Gandhi will be on a day-long tour to her parliamentary constituency of Rae Bareli on March 31, the party sources said here today.

She was supposed to be here on March 30 and 31 but owing to her busy schedule, the visit is curtailed to one day.

During her day-long visit, Ms Gandhi will attend the meeting of monitoring committee of her constituency. She will take rest at her newly-built house here before leaving to the national capital in the evening.

Kanpur, March 27: Love proved costly for a couple here.

40-year-old Gautam Gulati, a widower, fell in love with a Philippine girl Gigi Ojaraga. Gulati used to chat with the girl through internet and soon the friendship blossomed into love.

Gulati, a resident of Nawabganj, and Gigi then decided to tie the knot.

Gigi came to the city on February 10 and started staying with Gulati.

Blindly in love, Gulati did not inform the city police about Gigi’s arrival, DIG Police Prem Prakash said.

Andhra Pradesh Assembly hails SC order on reservation

Hyderabad, March 27: The Andhra Pradesh Assembly today hailed the Supreme Court’s interim order permitting four per cent reservation for backward class Muslims in jobs and education in the state.

Chief Minister K Rosaiah informed the Assembly that the apex court on March 25 stayed the High Court verdict which nullified the four per cent reservation.

Expressing happiness over the court’s order, the chief minister reiterated his government’s resolve to ensure reservation for backward Muslims.

Dilip Kumar was the last super star: Jaya Bachchan

New Delhi, March 27: Amitabh Bachchan may be respected the world over as the biggest Bollywood star but his actor-politician wife Jaya feels “Dilip Kumar was the last super star”.

“I don’t believe in super stars. Anyway, I think there are no super stars now. Dilip Kumar was the last,” said Jaya during an interaction with women journalists here.

Jaya said among the current lot of Bollywood actors she has a special bond with Shah Rukh Khan.

“I have a special bond with Shah Rukh as I played his mother in a film (“Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham”),” Jaya added.

‘Nirdoshi’, a very crude film

Mumbai, March 27: The posters of this new Kannada film “Nirdoshi” proudly proclaims that the film has been cleared by a tribunal and the censor board had not cleared the film. The film’s producer and director Goverdhan, who has also given the music, said that though the censor board wanted to delete many important sequences of the film, he was able to fight it out with the tribunal and won the case.

“Nirdoshi” is a crude film. Goverdhan has also indicated that the film will be dubbed in many other languages, including the three south Indian languages.

Modi questioned over 2002 riots case

Gandhinagar, March 27: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Saturday appeared before a Supreme Court-appointed probe panel to be questioned for the first time over his role in the 2002 communal riots in the state.

Wearing his trademark crisp white kurta and pyjama, Modi reached the Special Investigation Team (SIT) office around noon under tight security. The venue was the Old Secretariat building where a battery of journalists and photographers was waiting for him since morning.
