Two brothers given life sentence for boy?s murder

Bijnor, February 28: Two brothers have been sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here for murdering a boy over a land dispute in 2004.

Fast Track Court Judge Bina Chaudhary awarded the sentence to the duo– Brahma Pal and Sheesh Pal– and also imposed a fine of Rs 35,000 each on them.

The Judge referred the case of the third brother, a co-accused in the case, for hearing to the Juvenile Court as he is a minor.

The year 2009’s biggest blockbuster ‘3Idiots’ won best director award for Rajkumar Hirani, who also picked up the best story trophy with Abhijat Joshi at the ceremony held here on Saturday.

Hirani also won best Screenplay Award with Vidhu Vinod Chopra for the Aamir Khan starrer. The duo also bagged the Best Dialogue Award for the film.

Riyadh, February 28: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accompanied by over 100-member strong delegation arrived here Saturday to a warm welcome.

Quit if you can’t govern, Zia tells Hasina

Dhaka, February 28: Bangladesh’s opposition leader Khaleda Zia has announced a mass agitation against the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, asking her to quit if she cannot govern properly.

“The country is not functioning, all institutions are inoperative. The caretaker government has taken the country 20 years back and it will further go back if Awami League stays in power,” she said.

“They must step down in the interests of the country,” The Daily Star quoted her as saying Saturday.

Moderate earthquake hits Kashmir

Srinagar, February 28: An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale hit Kashmir valley in the wee hours today, but there was no report of any loss of life or damage to property, officials said.

“The 5.7 magnitude quake, with its epicentre located in the Hindukush mountain range of Afghanistan, hit Kashmir valley at 4:51 am,” Aamir Ali, spokesman of Jammu and Kashmir government disaster management cell, said.

However, there was no report of any casualties or damage to property so far, he said.

Anna Centenary Library to be open for public by June

Chennai, February 28: Housing 1.2 million books, the Rs 170-crore Anna Centenary Library being built by the Tamil Nadu Government, modelled on the famous National Library in Singapore, would be ready for inauguration by June.

The nine-storeyed modern library complex, built on an area of 3.75 lakh sq ft in Kotturpuram area of the city, would also subscribe to about 10,000 e-magazines of several genres.

Prisoners attack policemen on way to court, 18 escape

New Delhi, February 28: Four cops injured in attack, two escapees nabbed later, police order inquiry

Scores of policemen stood near the barricades put up on Sohna road, two kilometres ahead of Palwal court in Haryana, late Saturday afternoon.

On the spot where the two barricades stood, a police bus taking 51 prisoners from Bhondsi jail to Palwal court for hearing came to a sudden halt around 10.30 am and 16 prisoners, most of them charged with robbery and kidnapping, escaped.

They left behind at least four injured policemen and several questions for the Haryana Police.

Case against Dera chief, followers on rampage

Chandigarh, February 28: Resenting the filing of a murder case against the Dera Sacha Sauda head by the CBI, the sect supporters today went on a rampage setting ablaze four trains and around 37 vehicles, including 27 buses, and vandalised property in several places in Punjab and Haryana.

Tension ran high in many towns in the two neighbouring states as police were put on high alert and Haryana requisitioned 1,500 para-military personnel to deal with the situation.

200,000 rally in Rome to say ‘enough’ to Berlusconi

Tens of thousands of Italians congregated on Saturday in Piazza del Popolo in central Rome to protest against Berlusconi under a banner reading “Enough. The law is the same for everyone.”

Organizers put the turnout at 200,000.

Berlusconi is on trial on bribery charges. He is accused of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to a British lawyer in exchange for false testimony in the mid 1990s.

Kolkata, February 28: Trinamool Congress (TC) chief Mamata Banerjee today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to roll back the hike in prices of petro products.

“The hike in the prices of the petroleum products will affect the common man who are already burdened with high prices. Everyone should protest against the price hike.

“I request the Prime Minister and Soniaji to withdraw the hike,” she told reporters here.
