Indian networks behind terror attacks in India: Pak

Lahore, February 25: As Indo-Pak Foreign Secretaries met in Delhi for talks aimed at ending the chill in bilateral ties, Pakistan today claimed “Indian networks” were behind the terror attacks in Mumbai and on the Samjhauta Express and Indian Parliament.

Without giving any evidence to substantiate the claims, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said a terrorist assault of the magnitude of the Mumbai attacks could not have been carried out without the backing of an “Indian network.”

BJP objects to Goa Assembly session on Ramnavami

Panaji, February 25: Opposition BJP has objected to a session of Goa Assembly on the occasion of Ramnavami next month and said it will raise the issue in the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting.

“They (government) have forgotten that there is Ramnavami (on March 24). This is possible only in Ravan rajya,” Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar said yesterday, taking potshots at the Congress-NCP Government in the state.

The former Chief Minister said his party will bring the issue before the BAC, which decides the Assembly’s agenda.

Tendulkar better than even Bradman: Nasser Hussain

London, February 25: Former England captain Nasser Hussain is convinced that Sachin Tendulkar is the greatest batsman the game has ever seen, better than even the iconic Don Bradman.

“I have never liked comparisons between great players, but after Wednesday’s incredible game it must be said Sachin Tendulkar is the greatest batsman of all time,” Hussain wrote in his column for ‘The Daily Mail’.

Mulayam seeks to wean away beleaguered Pawar from UPA

New Delhi, February 25: Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav today sought to wean away Sharad Pawar from the UPA telling the Agriculture Minister that he better realise he was being made scapegoat by the Congress on price rise.

Yadav, participating in the discussion on price rise in the Lok Sabha, also made overtures to NDA convenor and JD(U) President Sharad Yadav urging him to quit the Opposition alliance.

Steel consumption to rise 9 pc in 2010: Survey

New Delhi, February 25: The Economic Survey today projected domestic steel consumption to grow in the range of 6-9 per cent in 2010 primarily on the back of improved demand from construction and automobile sectors.

“Indian steel outlook for 2010 continues to be positive, since Indian steel consumption is expected to be rising at 6-9 per cent during the current year, on account of higher demand from the real estate, construction and automobile sectors,” the Survey tabled in Parliament said.

Government clueless on price rise: BJP

New Delhi, February 25: The government has ‘run out of ideas’ on controlling the spiralling prices of essential commodities and is ‘only looking for alibis’ to cover up for its failures, main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Thursday.

‘Has this government run out of ideas on how to control prices,’ Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley asked while initiating a short duration discussion on the subject in the Rajya Sabha and then replied: ‘Obviously it has. The government is only looking for alibis.’

Gunmen kill J&K govt employee

Srinagar, February 25: Some unidentified gunmen today barged into the house of a government employee and shot him dead in Pulwama district of south Kashmir, police said.

Nisar Ahmad Lone, a storekeeper of consumer affairs and public distribution department, was attacked in his house at Brah-Bandina, 35 kms from here this morning.

Lone was shifted to S K Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura, where he succumbed, police said. Police have registered a case and launched a hunt to nab the assailants believed to be militants.

Sajjan Kumar ‘missing’: PSO files complaint, suspended

New Delhi, February 25: Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, whom the CBI has failed to arrest despite a non-bailable warrant against him in anti-Sikh riots cases, is “missing” for the past one week and his Personal Security Officer (PSO) has been suspended.

Delhi Police Constable Ram Niroha, posted as the PSO to the Congress leader, had approached the Security Wing on February 19 informing them that Kumar had gone missing from that day.

Sources said Mr. Niroha, posted with the Security Wing, was suspended from service and a probe is on to establish the veracity of his claims.

Over 4 crore households get jobs under employment scheme

New Delhi, February 25: With a budgetary outlay of over Rs. 70,000 crore on various poverty alleviation and employment generation schemes, nearly four and half crore households have availed job opportunities, the Economic Survey said on Thursday.

“During the year 2009-10, 4.34 crore households have been provided employment under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS),” the Survey for 2009-10 said.

In the previous financial year, over 4.51 crore households were provided employment under the scheme.

38 per cent of CBI”s legal posts vacant

New Delhi, February 25: A total of 778 posts in CBI are lying vacant, with the highest being in the crucial legal section of the country”s premier investigative agency. Out of the 237 posts sanctioned in the legal cell, a whooping 91 are lying vacant, statistics issued by the agency said.

The number of vacant posts is 38 per cent in the legal section this year, it was about 36 per cent in 2009 while in 2008 it was about 32. The CBI has, however, been able to fill up vacancies to a large extent in other wings of the agency.

Saudi capital gears up to receive Manmohan

Riyadh, February 25: Major streets of oil-rich Saudi Arabia’s capital have been decked up with Indian flags to welcome Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is scheduled to arrive here late this week on an important official visit to the Kingdom.

Senior officials from the two countries are busy making arrangements to host the Indian political and business leaders as well as fine-tune several agreements to be signed during the visit, the first by an Indian premier since 1982.

Talks end, India hands over new terror dossier to Pak

New Delhi, February 25: The crucial talks between the foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan ended Thursday despite lack of optimism on reaching common ground on key issues.

As per reports, India has demanded more action to curb terrorism that emanates from Pakistan and strongly pitched for the arrest of Jamaat-ud-Dawaah chief Hafiz Saeed – the mastermind of 26/11 attacks.

Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao first had a one-on-one with her Pakistani counterpart Salman Bashir and later, the two sides held delegation level talks.

Husain can come back if he wants: RSS

Mumbai, February 25: In a climb-down of sorts, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has made it clear that his organization has nothing against artist Maqbool Fida Husain, reports claimed Thursday.

The clarification comes after reports suggested that Husain has been conferred the nationality of Qatar.

The RSS chief made it clear that Husain can come back to India whenever he wants to.

MF Husain has been under attack from RSS and other Hindu fundamentalist groups for his paintings of Hindu goddesses and has been living in Dubai and London.

Infant deaths to fall below 30 per

New Delhi, February 25: With the gradual fall of crude birth and death rates, the country expects to lower its infant mortality rate to below 30 per 1,000 live births by 2012, although block and village level annual plans have not been prepared for 24 States and UT, the Economic Survey said.

India has successfully brought down its crude birth rate (CBR) to 22.8 in every 1,000 people from 29.5 in 1991, this led to decrease in crude death rate (CDR) to 7.4 from 9.8 in 1,000 people in the same period, the pre-budget Survey tabled in Parliament on Thursday said.

NZ Minister resigns over credit-card misuse

Wellington, February 25: New Zealand Prime Minister John Key ordered Thursday an inquiry into his cabinet ministers’ expenses after one of them resigned, admitting that he had used his ministerial credit card for personal purchases.

Mr. Key told a news conference that the auditor-general would review all expenditures by former housing and fisheries minister Phil Heatley and “look at the systems and processes for dealing with ministerial expenses to ensure we are doing everything possible to make sure the rules are clear and are being followed.”

North Korea, as usual, threatens South, U.S. over drill

Seoul, February 25: North Korea threatened to attack South Korean and U.S. forces for scheduled joint military drills in March even as nuclear envoys picked up the pace of work to get stalled disarmament talks back on track.

South Korea and the United States have held the drills for years without major incident. North Korea regularly criticizes the exercises as a prelude to invasion and nuclear war.

The drills run from March 8 to 18.

Chennai, February 25: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday congratulated the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar for setting a world record by hammering a double century in One Day International cricket.

Detained ex-army chief to contest Sri Lanka vote

Columbo, February 25: Sri Lanka’s ex-army chief who was detained on accusations of sedition after losing presidential elections is set to lead a new opposition coalition in an April parliamentary vote, a party official said Thursday.

Retired Gen. Sarath Fonseka has signed nomination papers to contest a seat in the capital Colombo, representing the Democratic National Alliance at the nationwide polls on April 8, party official Vijitha Herath said. His papers will be submitted Friday.

2 held for molesting minors

Mumbai, February 25: The Bandra police on Wednesday arrested two men for allegedly kidnapping, molesting and raping two sisters.

The accused, Ashish Kate (18), and Chetan Solankhi (22), are residents of Jai Bharat Nagar area in Bandra (West). On Saturday, the two girls were returning home from school around 11.30 am when Kate allegedly approached them and offered them a lift.

The sisters agreed to go with him because they knew Kate. “Kate took them to his friend’s residence in Shastri Nagar, Bandra (West), and called Solankhi,” said Police Inspector Sunil Kulkarni.
