Less than half aspirants turn up for CAT Phase 2

Mumbai, February 02: Out of the 11,000 CAT aspirants on the second phase list, only 4,800 took the test. The admission criteria for the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), CAT went online for the first time in December 2009 but virus attacks in centres across the country disrupted the exam.

6-yr-old raped in Trombay

Mumbai, February 02: A 17-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly raping a six-year-old in Cheetah camp on Monday.

The girl, daughter of a daily wage worker, was playing near her house in Cheetah camp when the boy , who runs a snack shop, took her to a vacant godown and allegedly raped her.

“When we heard about the incident, we rushed to the godown and saw her mouth stuffed with cloth,” a resident said.

“She has injuries on her head, arms and other parts of her body,” he added.

119 people died due to malaria in Mizoram in 2009

Aizawl, February 02: Some 119 people including 40 women died of malaria in Mizoram during 2009, state health department said here today. In 2008, 91 people had died of malaria in Mizoram, officials said.

They said 1,71,793 people had their blood samples tested during last year out of which 9,399 were found to be positive.

Doctors attributed high malaria deaths to delayed treatment saying that when malaria patients went to doctors for treatment, it was usually too late.

Fire in Hyderabad hospital, 30 injured

Hyderabad, February 02: At least 30 people, most of them patients, were injured when a fire broke out in a corporate hospital at Somajiguda area in Hyderabad city on Tuesday.

The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital, police said.

Fire brigades have been pressed into service to put out the flames.

Sriganganagar coldest in Rajasthan

Jaipur, February 02: Sriganganagar was the coldest place in Rajasthan recording a minimum temperature of 6.3 degree Celsius this morning as mercury rose by a few notches in various parts of the state, a Met official said.

The minimum temperature remained between 11.3 deg C and 15 deg C in other parts of the state, including the capital Jaipur.

Churu was at 9.5 deg C followed by Bundi and Dabok at 9 deg C. Chittorgarh, Pilani and Jaisalmer recorded 9.4 deg C, 9.8 deg C and 10.8 degree C respectively.

The Met office forecasts weather conditions to continue for next 24 hours.

Iran blames Israel for Hamas commander killing

Tehran, February 02: Iran blamed Israel on Tuesday for the killing of a Hamas commander in Dubai last month.

“This is another indication of the existence of state terrorism by the Zionist regime (Israel),” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told a news conference. “This shows the violation of other countries’ sovereignty by this regime.”

Bill Clinton to coordinate Haiti relief efforts

Washington, February 02: Former US President Bill Clinton, currently the UN special envoy to Haiti, will be named international coordinator for relief efforts in the earthquake-devastated country, UN officials said.

Speaking on condition of anonymity because the decision has not been formally announced, UN diplomats and officials said Clinton was the most obvious choice to coordinate aid and reconstruction in the impoverished Caribbean nation.

Raja defends BSNL’s post-bid negotiations with vendors

New Delhi, February 02: Making a case for allowing BSNL to go ahead with its Rs 36,000 crore network expansion plan, Telecom Minister A Raja has said negotiations with equipment suppliers after the bidding process had resulted in substantial reduction in prices.

“The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) guidelines do not rule out negotiations with L1 (lowest bidder) under exceptional circumstances,” Raja said in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, seeking his help in early resolution of a controversy over BSNL’s tender for network equipment.

Delhi serial blast key accused nabbed by UP ATS

Lucknow, February 02: Uttar Pradesh’s anti-terror squad (ATS) has taken into its custody Shehzad Ahmad alias Pappu- a key accused in the September 2008 Delhi serial blasts and the Batla House encounter.

Ahmed, who is said to be a militant belonging to the Indian Mujahideen terror outfit, was arrested from his native village on Monday evening.

There are reports that the accused Ahmed had undergone a training to fly planes from an institute in Bangalore and had surfaced as a leader of the module designated to execute aerial terror attacks.

Andhra businessman dies after abducted daughter’s murder

Hyderabad, February 02: A top businessman in Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada city died following cardiac arrest Tuesday, just hours after his 10-year-old kidnapped daughter was found murdered.

Palagani Prabhakara Rao, who was in the liquor, real estate and finance business, died at a hospital in Vijayawada, where he had been admitted after hearing the news of his daughter’s killing.

Code that defends against ‘stealthy’ computer worms

Washington, February 02: American scientists have developed a new code to contain “stealthiest” of self-propagating worms that cause damage worth billions of dollar worldwide.

These worms, also known as infectious computer programmes, are malicious programmes which after being released can spread throughout networks without human control, stealing or erasing hard drive data, interfering with pre-installed programmes and slowing, even crashing, home and work computers.

30 injured as fire breaks out in Hyderabad hospital

Hyderabad, February 02: At least 30 people were injured after fire broke out in a private hospital here Tuesday, police said.

A police officer said some more people could be trapped and efforts were on to rescue them.

The fire broke out in Park Super Speciality Hospital in the busy Somajiguda area.

The injured include patients, nurses and other hospital staff. The police officer said eight patients were rescued from the Intensive Care Unit.

Commission for ban on bodies preaching against religion

Manglore, February 02: A judicial commission which probed attacks on churches in Karnataka has recommended a ban on all communal organisations which practise and preach activities against any religion.

The Somasekhara Commission, in its interim report, said the existing laws were insufficient and suggested enactment of special legislation to punish such organisations, including forfeiting their assets.

Separatists call for strike, life crippled in Srinagar

Srinagar, February 02: Life in Srinagar and major towns of Kashmir valley was today crippled by a separatists-sponsored strike called to protest the killing of a teenager in teargas shelling on Sunday.

Shops and business establishments remained closed and transport was off the road in response to calls given by separatists, including both factions of Hurriyat Conference, police said.

Youths pelted stones at vehicles in Batmaloo, Maisuma, Bemina and Natipora in uptown and several other areas of old city, they said, adding the situation was, however, under control.

Delhi blasts accused arrested in Azamgarh

Lucknow, February 02: An accused in the 2008 serial blasts in the national capital was on Monday arrested by the Anti-Terror Squad of the Uttar Pradesh Police from Azamgarh district, a senior officer said in Lucknow.

Shahzad alias Pappu, who was an accused in September 13, 2008 serial blasts in Delhi and carried a cash reward of Rs five lakh on his head, was arrested by the ATS from Khalispur village this evening, Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Brij Lal told reporters here.

He alleged Pappu was member of the Indian Mujahideen (IM).

Low density polymer prices inch up on better offtake

New Delhi, February 02: Low density polymer prices marginally moved up by Rs 0.50 per kg at the local plastic market today on better offtake by plastic bag makers.

Traders said better offtake by plastic bag makers against tight arrivals mainly helped low density polymer prices to trade slightly higher.

Low density (LD)No 40 and (LD) No 400 were up by Rs 0.50 each at Rs 84.00 and Rs 86.00 per kg respectively.

New Delhi, February 02: Ustad Amjad Ali Khan lost out on a Grammy Award this year but for the sarod virtuoso a houseful concert and an appreciative audience is far more rewarding than any award.

The Ustad says he’s not disappointed about not winning a Grammy. “I am happy that a very outstanding and talented music director A R Rahman has won. Being an Indian he has made all of us very proud,” the maestro told PTI.

Amar Singh, Jaya Prada expelled from Samajwadi Party

Lucknow, February 02: Terming Amar Singh and Jaya Prada as “intruders”, Samajwadi Party today expelled them from the party on grounds of indulging in anti-party activities and denting its socialist image.

The decision was taken at the SP parliamentary board meeting chaired by party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav here, national general secretary and spokesman Mohan Singh told reporters.

He said the party also suspended membership of four MLAs – Madan Chauhan, Sandeep Agarwal, Ashok Chandel and Sarvesh Singh – all Amar Singh loyalists.
