New Delhi, February 03: “Et tu Brute”. That’s what Amar Singh said Tuesday after being expelled from the Samajwadi Party (SP) by his one-time mentor Mulayam Singh Yadav who he stressed had not just betrayed him but also “Talibanised” the “primitive” party.

“All I want to say is et tu Brute. ‘Brutus tum bhi’. But it has come with a relief,” Amar Singh told IANS in an exclusive interview, recalling Julius Caesar’s dying words on Brutus’ betrayal in the Shakespeare play.

Drug control on Iran border to be costly

Tehran, February 03: Iranian official has announced that a budget of USD three billion is needed for controlling drug trafficking on the country’s borders.

“The Majlis has approved 115 million dollars for budget allocation to strengthen border security this year. The Interior Ministry, however, had presented a 200-million-dollar-bill for the matter,” Deputy Interior Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Mahdi Mohammadifar, said Tuesday.

Saudi jets hit northern Yemen despite truce offer

Sanaa, February 03: Saudi fighter jets have launched a new round of aerial bombardments of Houthi positions in northern Yemen despite a truce offer put forward by the Yemeni Shia fighters.

According to a statement released by the Houthis on Tuesday, Saudi forces carried out 24 aerial attacks on the northern regions of Ghamar, Muhazat, Bani Maaz, al-Mukash, Qatabir, and Harf Sufyan as well as the villages in close proximity to the border regions with the oil-rich kingdom.

Several homes were reportedly destroyed while more than a dozen people lost their lives in the airstrikes.

Iranian president promises space program breakthroughs

Tehran, February 03: President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said he will announce good news about “great achievements” by Iranian scientists in the aerospace industry in the near future.

He made the remarks in a live interview with Channel One of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting on Tuesday night.

Ahmadinejad did not elaborate on the details of the aerospace industry breakthroughs, but on Monday, Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi announced that Iran will inaugurate five important aerospace projects on February 3, which is the country’s Aerospace Technology Day.

Housewife murdered at her Rohini residence

New delhi, February 03: Mamta Thakur (42) was anxious as she bid her daughter good luck for her second board exam practical on Tuesday morning.

A few hours later, 17-year-old Biddhi returned to find her mother’s body at their 2nd floor apartment in Rohini Sector-9. According to police, two armed assailants made a friendly entry into Mamta Thakur’s residence, physically assaulted the lone occupant, slashed her throat with knives and decamped with cash and jewellery amounting to Rs 15 lakhs, all in a matter of 45 minutes.

Mottaki, Erdogan discuss expansion of Iran-Turkey ties

Ankara, February 03: Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan have held talks in Ankara that focused on the expansion of ties between Iran and Turkey.

Mottaki travelled to the Turkish capital on Tuesday to attend the 21st meeting of the Iran-Turkey Joint Economic Commission and met Erdogan after his arrival.

During the meeting, the Iranian foreign minister highlighted the importance of the agreement between Iran and Turkey to set up joint industrial towns and said the move could lead to a great enhancement in their bilateral relations.

US ups pressure but China won’t buckle on Iran issue

Washington, February 03: The United States is strongly urging China to respond to its call to impose new sanctions on Iran, but Beijing has not succumbed to the pressure to turn against Tehran.

‘Iranian weapon ends Apache copters’ air supremacy’

Tehran, February 03: A senior Iranian military official says Iran has developed a special weapon that can bring down Apache helicopters.

Col. Nasser Arab-Beigi, the director of the self-sufficiency organization of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), told the Fars news agency on Tuesday that the “special weapon” can also target advanced tanks.

He noted that the new weapon will put an end to the battlefield supremacy of the United States’ Apache helicopters.

Australian police say Indian man faked attack

Melbourne, February 03: The Indian man, who said he was attacked and set ablaze by assailants here, had falsely reported the incident for claiming insurance, Australian police alleged today.

Rupee up for 2nd day; at over 1-week high

Mumbai, February 03: The Indian rupee rose for a second straight day on Wednesday rising to more-than-one-week high on the back of a 1-percent gain in the sharemarket early and tracking higher regional peers.

* At 9:22 a.m. the partially convertible rupee was at 46.12/13 per dollar, stronger than its close of 46.22/23 on Tuesday.

* Most Asian currencies were trading stronger compared to the dollar.

* The BSE Sensex rose 1 percent early on Wednesday, with Reliance Industries and Infosys Technologies topping the gainers, helped by a rise in global markets.

Kuwait denies visit visa can be turned into residence visa

Manama, February 03: A Kuwaiti social affairs and labour ministry official has denied media reports claiming that visit visas can be turned into work permits.

“There is no truth to the reports that family visit or tourism visas can be changed to residence permits,” the unnamed official was quoted as saying by Al Siyassah daily on Tuesday.

“Such a possibility is confined to business visits provided that the visa holder has an advanced qualification. The condition is to ensure strict limits on the number of unskilled and marginal labourers in the country”

12 killed in Brazil bus-truck collision

Rio De Janeiro, February 03: Twelve people, including nine students, l bus collided head-on with a truck in western Brazil, officials said.

The accident occurred on a bridge when the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle and collided with the school bus coming from the opposite direction,reported citing officials Tuesday.

The vehicles were travelling between Montividiu and Ipora municipalities in Goias state.

The drivers of the two vehicles and a student’s mother were among the dead. The injured were admitted to a hospital.

12-year-old Saudi girl drops divorce requests

Riyadh, February 03: A 12-year-old Saudi girl has dropped her petition to divorce an 80-year-old man her father forced to marry in exchange for a dowry, according to media reports on Tuesday.

The girl and her mother reportedly withdrew the case on Monday in a court in Buraidah in Al Qasim province.

The girl told the court that her marriage to the man was done with her agreement, according to Okaz newspaper.

According to reports, the girl’s father, who is separated from her mother, arranged her marriage to the 80-year-old in exchange for a dowry payment of $22,667 (Dh83,414).

Al Mabhouh slaying: Dahi, Hamas rebut Israeli report

Abu Dhabi, February 03: Chief of Dubai Police and Hamas officials on Tuesday made light of an Israeli press report pointing fingers at Arab parties, and not Israelis, for the assassination of a Hamas leader in Dubai two weeks ago.

“As usual, they are lying,” Lt General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Chief of Dubai Police, told when reached for his comment on a report published by the Haaretz newspaper.

Hamas officials, also, accused the Israeli media of deception and “covering their crime”, a reference to the killing of senior Hamas military commander Mahmoud Al Mabhouh in his hotel room.

India hands over five million in aid to Haiti victims

New York, February 03: India has handed over five million dollars to Haiti’s UN envoy Leo Merores, as aid for the victims of the devastating earthquake that hit the Caribbean nation in January.

India is now considering the second phase of its response that will be geared towards reconstruction and rebuilding of Haiti’s infrastructure and economy.

The ambassadors of both the countries discussed areas in which India would be able to best serve Haiti’s need in the coming months.

Sensex opens higher by 166 pts on firm global cues

Mumbai, February 03: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex today gained 166 points in early trade on buying in metal, realty and auto stocks by funds, triggered by firm global cues. The 30-share index rose by 166.67 points to 16,330.11 points in the first five minutes of trade.

The BSE barometer had lost 192.59 points in the previous trading session. The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty also moved up by 51.85 points to 4,881.95 points.

Pentagon to lift ban on gays

Washington, February 03: The US Defence Department announced plans Tuesday to lift the ban on gays serving openly in the military but cautioned that any change in policy must be cautiously implemented.

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates said he was setting up a task force to determine how best to eliminate the ban and allow gays to serve openly to ensure a new policy would not disrupt unit cohesion.

Students in trouble as UK halts visa operations

Chandigarh, February 03: Some have paid their tuition fees, others have their acceptance letters in their hands. But now hundreds of Indian students may not be able to study in the UK thanks to a sudden decision to temporarily stop accepting student visa applications at its three centres in north India.

As there is no guarantee of getting their tuition fees back, which students have already paid in some cases, the fear of losing lakhs of rupees is looming over their head.

Three killed in mishap in New Delhi

New Delhi, February 03: Three persons, including a child, were killed and 11 others injured when an RTV overturned in North Delhi this morning.

The bus plying between Harsh Vihar and ISBT overturned in Majun Ka Tilla area after one of its tyres burst, police said.

The deceased child was a student of Ludlow Castle School.

The injured have been hospitalised.

War of words between Shiv Sena and Rahul Gandhi over migrants continues

Mumbai, February 03: Shiv Sena today stepped up its attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on the “Mumbai for all Indians” remark, raking up Sonia Gandhi’s foreign origin.

“Mumbai may belong to all Indians but how can it belong to an Italian mummy,” Thackeray said in an editorial in Sena mouthpiece Saamna.

“The ‘Prince of Congress’ is totally frustrated and it is in this frustration he has insulted Marathi people and Maharashtra,” he said.

The Sena leader said Mumbai was not a “dharamshala” (guesthouse) of the country that “anyone comes to Mumbai, spits here and leaves.”

Split wide open over Bt Brinjal; Ramesh sticks to stand

New delhi, February 03: A brinjal by any other name — aubergine or eggplant — is just another brinjal. Except, of course, when it comes with the prefix Bt that has now pitted minister Jairam Ramesh against minister Sharad Pawar.

On Tuesday, disagreeing once again with the voices emanating from the food & agriculture ministry, environment minister Ramesh said the expert body that okayed the genetically-modified brinjal was not final and that it will be the government that will take the call on the crop since the issue involved human safety.
