Philippine massacre defendant: ‘not guilty’ to more charges

Manilla, February 03: A politician accused of massacring dozens of people in the southern Philippines denied more murders Wednesday as prosecutors charged him with the deaths of 16 other people.

Andal Ampatuan Jnr., a member of a politically powerful Muslim clan that was once allied to President Gloria Arroyo, impassively entered fresh pleas of “not guilty” as relatives of some of the dead wept outside the courtroom.

CWG 2010: HC appoints panel to look into labour law violations

New Delhi, February 03: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday appointed a four-member committee to look into the alleged violations of labour laws at Commonwealth Games project sites.

A bench headed by Chief Justice A P Shah constituted a committee comprising a labour commissioner, labour secretary, former UN ambassador and a person associated with NHRC.

The court asked the committee to convene a meeting on Monday to look into the allegations and file its report by March 17.

CWC meet on Feb 5 ahead of CMs’ meeting on price rise

New Delhi, February 03: A meeting of the Congress Working Committee is being held here on February 5 against the backdrop of issues like price rise.

Party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said on Wednesday that the meeting will review the current political situation, but did not specify the agenda.

The meeting takes place a day before the conference of Chief Ministers convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on price rise.

The working committee deliberations are also important as the Union Budget 2010 -11 is to be presented later this month.

JAC to wait for terms of reference of Telangana committee

Hyderabad, February 03: The Telangana Joint Action Committee, spearheading the agitation for a separate state, on Wednesday said it would wait for the terms of reference of the Telangana committee announced by the Centre before giving its views.

“We would like to know the terms of reference of the and the time-frame of the committee,” JAC Convener C. Kodandaram told reporters here.

The JAC would meet later in the day to discuss the issue, he said.

Spontaneous strike cripples life in Srinagar

Srinagar, February 03: Normal life remained paralysed for the second consecutive day as people observed a spontaneous strike on Wednesday to protest against the killing of a teenager in teargas shelling on Sunday.

Shops and business establishments remained closed and transport kept off the roads in the summer capital even though no organisation had given a call for the strike today, officials said.

The Bajrang Dal workers were detained Tuesday evening from the airport here, police said.

The slogans began shortly after the 11-member EU delegation, which is scheduled to visit Kandhamal district Thursday, landed in Bhubaneswar. The team was whisked away from the airport amidst tight security while the protesters were nabbed.

Two killed in road mishap near Udaipur

Jaipur, February 03: Two persons were today killed and 11 others injured when a bus in which they were travelling overturned in Rajasthan”s Udaipur district, police said.

The mishap occurred when the speeding bus, on its way from Mumbai to Chittorgarh, overtuned near Kherwara village, 50 kms from Udaipur district, they said.

The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where a bus passenger was declared brought dead, while the cleaner of the vehicle succumbed to injuries later.

The longest human chain for Telangana

Hyderabad, Feb 03 (Siasat News): The Joint Action Committee constituted for the cause of Telangana, has decided to form a longest human chain as part of its struggle for separate Telangana state.

According to a press note of JAC, on February 3, a human chain will be formed from 10 am to 12 noon at Tank Bund. It is the part of the longest human chain for Telangana Manavaharam from Adilabad to Mahboobnagar.

India confident Kirsten will stay on as coach

New delhi, February 03: India is confident that Gary Kirsten will stay on as coach for another year despite speculation that the former South African opener will succeed Mickey Arthur in the role in his native country.

Arthur resigned and the entire selection panel were sacked last week following the drawn series with England, while Kirsten’s current two-year contract comes up for extension in March.

Media reports have suggested that Kirsten will be offered the job at the end of South Africa’s current test and one-day tour of India.

Security guard of ex-MP dies while cleaning rifle

Jamshedpur, February 03: A security guard of former Jharkhand MP Suman Mahto died when the rifle he was cleaning fired accidentally hitting him in Jamshedpur city Wednesday.

The accident took place at the residence of former Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)- parliamentarian Mahto when two of his state police security guards were cleaning their AK 47 rifle and 9 mm pistol. Mahto was an MP from Jamshedpur and his residence is in Gamharia area of the steel township.

Kolkata, February 03: The worldwide economic slowdown has led to a fall in the placement of engineering graduates in the country with only a handful of technology schools having reported cent per cent placement.

There has been an average decline of 11 per cent in the placement of engineering graduates from 111 technology schools in 2009 compared to the previous year, except for 16 of them which recorded cent per cent absorption, according to the 5th IDC-Dataquest T-School, 2009 survey.

No unilateral decision on Nalini’s premature release

Chennai, February 03: Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday said it cannot take any unilateral decision on the plea by Nalini, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, for her premature release.

“This is a major issue that has to be discussed at the national level. Therefore, we cannot unilaterally take a decision on it,” Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi told reporters here.

He said the state government has appointed an advisory board to consider her plea and its report “is on its way.”

Blast goes off near school in NW Pakistan

Peshawar, February 03: An explosion near a girls’ school along the Afghan border in northwest Pakistan wounded several people Wednesday, police said.

Local TV channels reported foreign aid workers and security officials were among the casualties, but officials would not confirm that.

The explosion rocked the Shahi Koto area of Lower Dir district as people were heading to an inauguration ceremony for the school, local police official Nawaz Khan said. The exact cause was not immediately clear.

A convoy that included security officials was hit during the blast as well.

Dubai, February 03: Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s much-awaited film ‘My Name Is Khan’ will see its world premiere in Abu Dhabi next week.

The film, which marks the return of the famous onscreen pair Shah Rukh and Kajol after a gap of eight years, is a love-story in the backdrop of post 9/11 America.

Directed by Karan Johar and co-produced by Khan, the film will premiere in Abu Dhabi on February 10 followed by an European premiere in Berlin two days later.
