World Book Fair inaugurated in Delhi

New Delhi, January 30: The 19th World Book Fair began at the Pragati Maidan here Saturday with \’India- The Nehru-Gandhi family and indigenous publishing\’ as its spotlight.

The nine-day fair, organised by the National Book Trust (NBT), has 35 foreign publishers exhibiting books from 15 countries. Spread over an area of 42,000 square meters, the fair has 2,400 stalls and 1,199 participants, besides representation from international bodies like ILO, WHO and UNESCO.

Inaugurating the fair, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said the event has a rich legacy.

‘Pak intelligence behind fake Indian currency racket’

Dhaka, January 30: Pakistani intelligence is involved in marketing counterfeit currency in India and Bangladesh to patronise militant groups like LeT for their cross-border operations, a media report here claimed today.

Quoting Bangladeshi police and intelligence agencies, the mass circulation Prothom Alo newspaper said several detained suspected members involved in such activities said a Pakistani intelligence agency patronised them and their operations were being regulated from Karachi.

Saif Ali Khan defends his Padma Shri

New Delhi, January 30: Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan’s name in the list of Padma Shri awardees may have raised some eyebrows but the star says that he deserves the honour and will try his best to live up to it.

“If you look at the awardees over the last couple of years, all of them have not exactly invented a nuclear bomb,” the actor told a news channel.

Saif’s being named a Padma Shri had surprised many and sparked protests from the Bishnoi community due to the pending court case against him and Salman Khan for killing two black bucks.

China restriction exchange with US

Beijing, January 30: China announced Saturday that it would freeze the military exchange with United States, in response to US plans to sell arms to Taiwan, state media reported.

“China decided to suspend scheduled visits between the Chinese and US armed forces, in response to Washington’s plan to sell a package of arms worth about 6.4 billion US dollars to Taiwan,” the state run Xinhua news agency reported.

Taliban deny meeting UN envoy for Afghanistan

Kabul, January 30: The Taliban denied reports Saturday that insurgent leaders met with the top United Nations envoy for Afghanistan to discuss bringing peace to war-torn country.

In a statement sent to media in Kabul, the Taliban Islamic Leadership Council called the reports of talks with envoy Kai Eide as “mere futile and baseless rumors, being a machination against Jihad and mujahideen who are waging Jihad against the invaders.”

“The Leadership Council once again emphasizes continuation of Islamic Jihad against all invaders,” it said.

Gates Foundation pledges $10 billion to develop vaccines

Washington, January 30: Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda have announced that their foundation will commit $10 billion over the next 10 years to help research in developing and delivering vaccines for the world’s poorest countries.

The couple said that increased investment in vaccines by governments and the private sector could help developing countries dramatically reduce child mortality by the end of the decade.

“We must make this the decade of vaccines,” said Gates.

Nigerian rebels end ceasefire and threaten oil attacks

Cairo, January 30: Nigeria’s main militant group called off a three-month-old ceasefire in the Niger Delta on today and threatened to unleash “an all-out assault” on Africa’s biggest oil and gas industry.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), responsible for years of attacks on oil facilities, said it could no longer trust the government to negotiate demands for greater control of the region’s natural resources.

Gurgaon, January 30: Vivek Oberoi is clearly not happy about being tagged as a “stalker” or a “gatecrasher” and says he is “genuinely sick” of all controversies.

“Suddenly I’m a stalker one day and one day I’m a gatecrasher. Mela laga hua hai kya (Is it a fair of controversies)? Will anybody say anything and walk away? What nonsense is this? NASA’s Mars rover Spirit begins new chapter

Washington, January 30: After six years of unprecedented exploration, NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Spirit will no longer be a fully mobile robot.

NASA has designated the once-roving scientific explorer a stationary science platform after efforts during the past several months to free it from a sand trap were unsuccessful.

The venerable robot’s primary task in the next few weeks will be to position itself to combat the severe Martian winter.

Australia beat Pak to lift ICC U-19 World Cup

Lincoln (New Zealand), January 30: Australia lifted their third Under-19 Cricket World Cup title after putting up a fine all-round performance to beat Pakistan by 25 runs in a low-scoring final here today.

Cueist Yasin writes to Rahul after Padma Shri snub

New Delhi, January 30: Miffed at being ignored for the Padma Shri award, two-time Asian champion cueist Yasin Merchant has shot off an emotional letter to AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, ridiculing some of this year’s awardees.

Merchant, in his two-page letter, has questioned the selection criteria for the award, saying his international achievements have been completely ignored.

Rahman to attend Grammy awards

Chennai, January 30: Double Oscar-winning musician A R Rahman today left for the US to attend the Grammy awards function, where he has been nominated for the ‘Slumdog Millionaire score.

The 44-year-old music maestro has been nominated in Best Song Written For Motion Picture for ‘Jai Ho’ and for Best Compilation Soundtrack for the film.

Rahman left for London early this morning by an Emirates flight alongwith his wife and son, airport sources said.

He is expected to leave for Los Angeles from there.

3 Shia pilgrims killed near Pak-Iran border

Baluchistan, January 30: At least three Pakistani Shias have been killed and seven others wounded when unknown gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying pilgrims bound for Iran in Pakistan’s Baluchistan province.

The incident took place on Friday in Hazar Gunji area of Baluchistan as a passenger bus carrying a group of Pilgrims heading towards Iran’s border was attacked by four people riding two motorbikes, a Press TV correspondent reported on Saturday.

The local police has described the attack as a sectarian one.

Obama security adviser cites risk of Iran provoking Israel

Washington, January 30: US President Barack Obama’s national security adviser is citing a heightened risk that Iran will respond to growing pressure over its nuclear program by stoking violence against Israel.

The adviser, retired Marine Gen. James Jones, said history shows that when regimes are feeling pressure they can lash out through surrogates.

He said that in Iran’s case that would mean facilitating attacks on Israel through Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza. Iran helps arm Hezbollah and Hamas.

Washington, January 30: Terror groups may be planning attacks in India, the US State Department has warned in its latest advisory and asked its nationals to be alert while visiting the country in the coming months.

“The Department of State alerts US citizens to ongoing security concerns in India. The US government continues to receive information that terrorist groups may be planning attacks in India,” the State Department said.

China warns US on arms sales

Beijing, January 30: China angrily warned the United States on Saturday that a plan to sell $6.4bn in arms to Taiwan would seriously harm already-strained ties. One Chinese expert said the sale would give Beijing a “fair and proper reason” to accelerate weapons testing.

The US is “obstinately making the wrong decision,” China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website.

But in terms of the way the three main characters are thrown against each other in combustions that suggest a brutal bonding between the libido and the landscape.

New Delhi, January 30: Trying to warm up to Mayawati, rebel SP leader Amar Singh today said the BSP supremo has proved herself against all odds and he can understand her “pain” when she was “humiliated” by Mulayam Singh Yadav.

US soldiers halt violence

Haiti, January 30: US soldiers halted a violent confrontation on Friday between looters and a private security guard who shot and killed one man inside an appliance store and appeared poised to shoot others.

The chaotic scene unfolded in front of several journalists in a commercial district of downtown Port-au-Prince that was largely destroyed by the January12 earthquake. Bands of young men have been scavenging through the debris for anything of value, occasionally battling Haitian police.

Plane diverted in terror scare

Washington, January 30: A Continental Airlines jetliner flying from Newark, New Jersey, to Bogota, Colombia, was diverted to Jacksonville, Florida, on Friday over suspicion that a passenger was on the government’s watch list of suspected terrorists banned from commercial flights. It turned out to be a case of mistaken identity.

The passenger – one of 75 on board – was cleared by the FBI at Jacksonville International Airport and permitted to continue on the flight to Colombia, the Transportation Security Administration said.

Preity won’t catwalk in Bangalore

New Delhi, January 30: Refuting rumours, Bollywood actress Preity Zinta clarified Saturday that she is not walking the ramp at the ongoing Bangalore Fashion Week.

“Hey guys! Just to clarify that I will not be walking the ramp at Bangalore Fashion Week! Was never meant to do so. I don’t know how the rumour started,” Zinta posted on her Twitter account.

Designers like Abdul Halder, Namrata G, Ramesh Dembla and Shantanu and Nikhil are participating in the Bangalore Fashion Week that concludes later Saturday.
