Dense fog engulfs capital, hits air, rail services again

New Delhi, January 27: Dense fog blanketed the national capital again Wednesday, dropping visibility to nearly zero, disrupting over 100 flights and delaying at least 30 trains, while many were rescheduled or even cancelled.

In the city, visibility dropped to near zero at 5.30 a.m. and continued to remain below 50 metres, said an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official. It affected road traffic as well, with motorists forced to drive slow.

Australia releases dossier on attacks on Indians

Sydney, January 27: The Australian government has released a police dossier of high-profile attacks on Indians over the past year, which shows that nearly half of those arrested since March last year for vicious assaults were less than 18 years old.

The dossier, prepared by Victoria Police, was handed over after Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith telephoned Indian External Affairs Minister SM Krishna on January 11 to express his condolences over the January 2 murder of Indian student Nitin Garg in Melbourne.

Clinton leaves for London conference on Afghanistan

Washington, January 27 :US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has left for London to attend the crucial conference on Afghanistan to be attended by over 60 countries, including India which will be represented by Foreign Minister S M Krishna.

“This conference is about further understanding what (Afghan) President (Hamid) Karzai plans to do as he continues to form his government,” Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs P J Crowley said.

Tiger Woods’ wife calls off divorce: report

Los Angeles, January 27: The wife of Tiger Woods has called off their divorce after visiting the golfing superstar at a clinic where he is undergoing rehab for sex addiction, website reported on Tuesday.

The report said that Elin Nordegren spent five days at the rehab centre participating in the therapy for Woods, who apparently cheated on her with at least a dozen women during their marriage.

“She was happy when she came home,” a source told “Things went well.”

Moin want UDRS in ODIs too

Karachi, January 27: Former Pakistan captain Moin Khan wants the International Cricket Council to experiment with the Umpires Decision Review System (UDRS) in one-day internationals.

Moin, who played 69 Tests and 219 one-day internationals, said he believed it was far more important to have the UDRS in ODIs than in any other form of the game.

“I am happy they have this system being experimented with in Test matches but it is required more in one-dayers where the margin for error is less and one bad decision can change the course of a match,” he said.

Kuwait may grant homes to women married to foreigners

Manama, January 27: Kuwaiti women married to foreigners will be given houses by the government if a motion filed in parliament gets approved.

The draft law calling upon the government to provide “appropriate” houses to all Kuwaiti women who are married to non-Kuwaiti men was endorsed by the parliament’s Women’s Committee and will be discussed by the MPs at a regular session.

According to the motion, widowed or divorced Kuwaiti women should also be entitled to a house from the government, Al Siyassah daily reported.

Two linked to Al Qaida jailed for five years

Manama, January 27: Two Bahraini men accused of planning attacks in Bahrain and neighbouring countries, including US navy ships, were sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday.

The men — a 21-year-old customs officer and an employed, 22, — were arrested on April 26 based on information obtained by the NSA that one of them had contacts with a terrorist cell, believed to be of Al Qaida.

Another foggy day for Delhiites

New Delhi, January 27: Dense fog once again disrupted air, rail and road traffic in the city this morning even as the minimum temperature climbed up marginally to settle at 9.8 degrees Celsius.

Around 50 domestic and international flights operating from the Indira Gandhi International Airport here were delayed, diverted or cancelled as the fog started descending on the city late last night.

The runway visibility dropped to 50 metres due to which 21 domestic and international flights were diverted while 15 others were cancelled,” an airport official said.

North and South Korea exchange fire

Seoul, January 27: North and South Korea have reportedly exchanged artillery fire near a disputed sea border off the west coast of the peninsula.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency quoted presidential officials as saying the two sides fired into the air on Wednesday and there were no casualties.

South Korean security officials scrambled for an emergency meeting over the exchange, which has ratcheted up tensions on the divided peninsula.

Chicago, January 27: Charged with conspiring in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Pakistani-American Lashkar-e-Taiba operative David Coleman Headley will be produced in a court here on Wednesday where he will respond to the charges against him.

Headley is set to appear for his arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Judge Arlander Keys in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois.

Co-accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana appeared in the same court on Monday and pleaded not guilty to providing material support to terror plots in Mumbai and Denmark.

Rajapaksa takes lead over Fonseka in presidential election

Colombo, January 27: Keeping beyond his main rival in the presidential election, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has extended his lead over former army Chief General Sarath Fonseka as heavily armed troops Wednesday surrounded the hotel where the general was staying.

With over a million votes counted by 6 a.m. Rajapaksa had recorded 689,261 or 60.01 percent against Fonseka’s 442,292 or 38.51 percent, agency reported.

As the votes were being counted, soldiers surrounded the hotel where Fonseka was staying.

CBI court to announce judgment in fodder scam case on Jan 28

Ranchi, January 28: A special CBI court would announce its judgement in a multi-crore fodder scam case on January 28.

Official sources today said special judge Praveer Jha would pronounce the judgement to nine people accused in of fraudently withdrawing about Rs 50,33,531 from Hazaribagh treasury during 1993-94.

Altogether 14 people, including the then Regional Animal Husbandary Director Kashinath Singh, were made accused in the case.

Five among them died during the trail.

The CBI court had awarded punishment in 34 out of total 53 cases of fodder scam.

Indian Airlines hijacker deported to India

Toronto, January 27: Canada Tuesday deported the mastermind of the 1984 Indian Airline hijacker to India.

Parminder Singh Saini, 46, who took refuge here 15 years ago and faced deportation to India, was put on the plane back to India earlier Tuesday, officials said. Saini was escorted by officials of the Canadian Border Security Agency (CBSA) to Toronto airport to board a flight for India.

It was not known on which airline flight he was put on his one-way journey to India.
