Cops break Kakatiya University students’ fast

Warangal, January 02: police, in a large number, descended on the Kakatiya University campus today and broke the indefinite fast being staged by nine students.

The condition of two was serious.

All the fasting students were shifted to MGM Hospital and their collegemates are staging a rasta roko in protest against the police’s move.

The University employees associations JAC has also launched relay hunger strike today.

Maoist protest: High alert in Bihar, several trains cancelled

Patna, December 02: A Maoist protest that began Saturday has led to a high alert in Bihar and the cancellation or diversion of several trains for the safety of passengers, official sources said.

The Maoists called for the strike in Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.

Bihar police chief Anand Shankar said the force was directed to be alert and keep a close vigil on the situation. Additional security forces were deployed at important government buildings and railway stations across the state, he added.

Pro-Telangana leaders up against Rosaiah again

Hyderabad, January 02: A day after a minister hit out at him, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah on Friday came under attack from some of the other pro-Telangana leaders within his own party over the separate state issue.

Senior Congress MLA R Damodar Reddy took exception to the complaint reportedly made by Rosaiah against Information Technology Minister K Venkata Reddy who alleged that the Chief Minister was behaving like a leader from coastal Andhra.

PM Manmohan Singh is ‘Chic Sikh’ of 2009

Chandigarh, January 02: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been named the ‘Chic Sikh’ of 2009 by popular online Sikh magazine sikhchic.com

Two others sharing the honour are Delhi lawyer Harvinder Singh Phoolka, who has crusaded for the rights of the 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims, and former bureaucrat Saran Singh of “The Sikh Review”.

Hewitt wins; Australia, Romania 1-1 at Hopman Cup

Perth, January 02: Australian Lleyton Hewitt has beaten Victor Hanescu of Romania 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2) to level their Hopman Cup clash at 1-1.

Hewitt set up match point with an ace, then used a lob to the baseline to clinch the match.

Earlier, Sorana Cirstea had beaten Samantha Stosur 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to give Romania a 1-0 lead.

Cirstea and Hanescu were to take on Stosur and Hewitt in mixed doubles later Saturday to decide the opening fixture of the eight-country, eight-day mixed-teams tournament at the Burswood Dome.

No curfew relaxation in MP town

Shajapur (MP), January 02: Curfew remained in force for the second day today in nearby Maksi town which witnessed violence after the death of a youth during a cricket match, police said.

There was no relaxation in the curfew. No untoward incident was today reported in the town, 25 kms from here, where an indefinite curfew was clamped last evening after the death of a person and injuries to five others in a clash between two groups, DIG Ujjain range Varun Kapoor said.

How moon gets its exosphere

Washington, January 02: Years back, planetary scientists discovered that the Moon, long thought to have no atmosphere, actually has an extremely thin exosphere. But, they have been uncertain about how it gets the layer.

In fact, they believed that the ions that make up the lunar exosphere are generated at Moon’s surface by interaction with solar photons, plasma in the Earth’s magnetosphere, or micrometeorites.

Explosion at fireworks factory in China, 9 killed

Beijing, January 02: A massive explosion in a fireworks factory in north western China has killed nine workers and wounded eight others.

The blast yesterday afternoon reduced to ashes all the seven workshops of the Xinping Firecrackers Company in Pucheng County in Shaanxi Province, Xinhua reported.

China has one of the largest fireworks industry in the world with crackers being exported to a number of countries, but the industry has a very poor safety record.

Xinhua said that police have launched a search for the factory owner Qu Pingxin who fled after the incident.

UN team on Benazir killing denied access

Karachi, January 02: The UN probe into the assassination of former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto has hit a dead end as the government has denied access to the incumbent army chief and other top military generals for interrogation. The UN had appointed a three-member inquiry commission to determine the facts and circumstances under which Bhutto was assassinated on December 27, 2007. According to the terms of reference of the investigation, the UN had demanded that the commission would enjoy complete cooperation from the government.

Single women seek sub-quota within women’s quota

Chennai, January 02: Single women in the State have demanded 33 per cent sub-quota within the government’s quota for jobs and other benefits for women.

Single women include those who are divorced, separated, widowed, deserted, and unmarried beyond the marital age. They form almost 30 per c e n t o f the State’s population, according to presentations made at a seminar here on Friday.

The seminar threw up different problems faced by them in society. Like Kamala (name changed) who is yet to receive widow’s pension even after registering for it more than a year-and-a-half ago.

2 killed in road mishap

Muzaffarnagar, January 02: Two people were killed and one was injured in a truck-car collision due to dense fog in Purkaji area of this Uttar Pradesh district.

A truck hit the car of Nepal Singh and Adesh Kumar due to fog late last night on Delhi-Haridwar national highway resulting in the death of the duo on the spot, police said here today.

A person was also injured in the accident.

Bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

Congress serves notice to Andhra minister over anti-Rosaiah remarks

Hyderabad, January 02: The Congress on Friday issued notice to Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Information Technology K. Venkat Reddy for criticising Chief Minister K. Rosaiah over the Telangana issue.

Party general secretary Janardhan Diwedi issued the notice to the minister for “deliberately damaging the party’s image” by making allegations against Rosaiah.

Party sources said Venkat Reddy has been given seven day time to reply to the notice.

Venkat Reddy, hailing from Telangana region, Thursday accused the chief minister of being partisan on the Telangana issue.

Pakistan govt under pressure after deadly attack

Ialamabad, January 02: Pakistan’s government came under renewed pressure on Saturday to bring stability to the country after one of the bloodiest bombings in more than two years killed at least 89 people.

The attack at volleyball game on Friday suggested al Qaeda-linked Taliban insurgents were focusing more on bombing large crowds of civilians to inflict maximum casualties and spread terror, instead of attacking hard targets such as security forces.

Honolulu, January 02: US President Barack Obama on Saturday for the first time accused an al Qaeda affiliate in Yemen of arming and training a young Nigerian man for a thwarted suicide mission to blow up a US airliner.

Obama, in his weekly radio and video address posted on the White House website, promised to hold the group, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, to account for the attack, declaring the United States was at war with a “far-reaching network of violence and hatred”.

Woman killed in East Delhi

New Delhi, January 02: A 20-year-old woman was killed in her east Delhi residence on Thursday, police said.

The incident occurred between 3 and 6 p.m.

at Avantika Singh’s Madhu Vihar house, police said.

“Unidentified persons killed Singh by beheading her with a sharp-edged weapon,” said a senior police officer.

Mousavi ready to die for opposition cause

Tehran, January 02: Iran’s opposition leader on Friday pledged to remain defiant in the face of new threats – including calls by hard-liners for his execution – and said he would sacrifice his life in defense of the people’s right to protest peacefully against the government.

Mir Hossein Mousavi’s remarks come after the worst unrest since the immediate aftermath of the disputed June presidential election. At least eight people died during anti-government protests Sunday, including Mousavi’s nephew.

U.S. business group accuses Obama of shorting Taiwan

Washington, January 02: The head of a prominent U.S. business group accused President Barack Obama of compromising Taiwan’s security to promote U.S. ties with China.

Self-ruled Taiwan, which China deems a wayward province, is watching “with increased exasperation,” said Rupert Hammond-Chambers, president of the U.S.-Taiwan Business Council.

Rahul plans to make IYC largest youth body

New Delhi, January 02: The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) could become the largest youth organisation in the world by the end of 2010.

AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi hopes to have more than 1 crore members by the time organsational polls are conducted in December.

India to face A(H1N1) challenge for one more year

Madurai, January 02: India will have to face the challenge of A(H1N1) influenza for one more year since the flu is now surfacing in new places in the country, V.M. Katoch, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Director General, said here on Saturday.

“In places where swine flu cases were already reported, it has been contained. But we found that it is spreading to new pockets and hence we face the challenge for one more year. It is like a flood and will take some time to recede,” he observed.

Scissors taken out from man’s stomach after two years

Raipur, January 02: Doctors took out a pair of scissors from a 60-year-old man’s stomach that a doctor had forgotten to remove after an operation two years ago.

The latest surgery took three long hours and was conducted late Friday at a government hospital in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, about 40 km from here, senior surgeon D.C. Jain told IANS.

Jain said the patient, Dhruv Verma, was a resident of Bemetara in Durg district. The scissors were apparently left behind by a private doctor in December 2007.
