Younis likely to play third Test against Australia

Lahore, January 02: Hinting that Younis Khan could play in the third Test against Australia, chief selector Iqbal Qasim said the senior batsman was still ignorned to fly Down Under as Pakistan wanted him to be fully prepared before joining the national side.

Qasim revealed that Younis would be definitely going to Australia at some point during the ongoing Test series, adding that the PCB and selectors still didn’t consider team management’s request to send the former skipper to bolster the side’s middle-order because they wanted him to play without pressure.

Top priority to Jalayagnam, says Rosaiah

Hyderabad, January 02: Outlining the priorities of the State Government in the New Year, Chief Minister K Rosaiah today declared that Jalayagnam, education and healthcare programmes will be given priority. He stated that irrigation projects which are in advanced stages of completion will be given top priority in budget allocations.

Hyderabad, January 02: Telugu Desam chief N Chandrababu Naidu today greeted several prominent persons on the occasion of New Year Day.

The Leader of the Opposition called on Governor ESL Narasimhan and greeted him. Later, he called up several other prominent persons including Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi to greet them.

Secretariat bustles with greeters

Hyderabad, January 02: Though most of the ministers did not attend their offices, the State Secretariat bustled with activity today on the occasion of New Year Day.

Hundreds of officials, employees and others visited the place and extended their greetings to the heads of the departments.

Chief Minister K Rosaiah met new Governor ESL Narasimhan at the Raj Bhavan and conveyed his wishes. Latter he received hundreds of officials and employees of the Secretariat who wished him a happy new year.

T`gana’ continues on roads, at hunger camps

Sangareddy, January 02: The protests demanding separate Telangana continued in various districts of the region today.

SANGAREDDY: Government employees, along with their families, staged relay hunger strikes across Medak district. Representatives of various political parties expresed their solidarity with the employees in Sangareddy, Siddipet and Medak division.

Five more police stations for Cyberabad

Hyderabad, January 02: Cyberabad police commissionerate will have five new police stations and 1,500 additional policemen in the new year.

With this, the number of police stations in Cyberabad will reach 40, including one woman police station while the total number of police personnel would be around 5,500. The new police stations, Kukatpally Housing Board Colony, Medipally, Chaitanyapuri, Karmanghat and Shivarampally, would be carved out of the existing Kukatpally, Uppal, Saroornagar, L.B. Nagar and Rajendranagar police stations respectively.

Five Indians on hijacked British ship

Mumbai, January 02: British flagship M. V. Asian Glory, with 25 crew members including five Indians, was hijacked off the Somali coast Friday, an Indian maritime authority said Saturday.

The ship was allegedly overpowered by Somali pirates around 620 miles (998 km) from the east coast of Somalia Friday around 7 p. m., the Directorate-General of Shipping (DGS) said in a statement here.

The ship’s managers in Mumbai, Messrs Zodiac India, said that all the crew members, including the Indians, were safe and unharmed.

3 ministers to wait till January 5

Hyderabad, January 02: In spite of an appeal by Pradesh Congress Committee president D Srinivas, the three Telangana ministers – Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, D Sridhar Babu and B Sudershan Reddy who did not withdraw their resignations, have decided to wait till the outcome of the January 5 meeting in Delhi.

It may be recalled that 10 other Telangana ministers have decided to withdraw their resignations on the grounds that they were satisfied with the Centre for initiating the process of talks on Telangana issue.

London, January 02: Women knew it all along. And now, a study has confirmed it to the entire world – nothing makes a girl cry as much as a man.

More than three in four women blame their partners for making them cry, not to mention their fathers or sons, reports The Daily Express.

Bomb threat grounds plane in southeastern US

Florida, January 02: A Northwest Airlines plane has made an emergency landing in Nashville after the pilot found a suspicious package, which turned out to contain a harmless Christmas ornament.

Flight 2364, headed from Detroit in the Midwest region of the United States to Orlando in Florida, landed at Nashville International Airport in the US state of Tennessee at about 8 a.m. local time (1400 GMT).

The 75 passengers and five crew members aboard were evacuated, rescreened and allowed to re-board about two hours later after dogs and a bomb unit searched the plane.

Mumbai ACP denies partying with Chhota Rajan gang

Mumbai, January 02: Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Prakash Wani today vehemently denied reports of him allegedly partying with Chhota Rajan gang members at a private club in suburban Chembur here.

Hyderabad, January 02: Civil Supplies Minister J Krishna Rao today refuted the statements made by his Cabinet colleague and Endowments Minister G Venkata Reddy that the Congress Party never promised Telangana State. Krishna Rao said that Congress party has always been committed to form separate Telangana and termed the statements of Venkata Reddy as baseless.

New Year comes with whiff of T

Hyderabad, January 02: The T flavour to New Year celebrations was evident not only on the Osmania University campus but also off it.

Activists gathered at junctions at Nallakunta, Vidyanagar and Tarnaka, where they stopped motorbikes and cars yesterday night and let them pass only after the occupants raised Jai Telangana slogans.

Arguments broke out in some cases, but there was no major incident.

A car belonging to an Uppal resident was damaged at Amberpet following an altercation, the police said.

Now, prisoners can study at IGNOU for free

New Delhi, January 02: As a New Year gift, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) today declared that it will provide free education to prisoners henceforth.

“All jail inmates in the country will now be able to access free and quality education according to their choice,” a senior administrator of IGNOU said.

In a notice to all its regional directors, heads of schools, divisions and centres, the registrar of the university said that the decision was pursuant to approval by the university’s apex controlling body, the Board of Management (BoM).

Karzai expresses condolences to Afghan civilians

Kabul, January 02: President Hamid Karzai is expressing condolences to relatives of Afghan civilians allegedly killed in an airstrike.

Helmand provincial governor spokesman Dawud Ahmadi, who confirmed the president’s visit Saturday to the southern town of Lashkar Gah, says an attack by international forces Wednesday killed seven civilians and two Taliban insurgents.

Civilian casualties is a sensitive issue facing foreign forces in Afghanistan. NATO says it’s investigating the allegation.

Cong T MPs urge CM to lift cases against student

Baghdad, January 02: Iraqis seeking justice for 17 people shot dead at a Baghdad intersection responded with bitterness and outrage Friday at a U.S. judge’s decision to throw out a case against a Blackwater security team accused in the killings.

The Iraqi government vowed to pursue the case, which became a source of contention between the U.S. and the Iraqi government. Many Iraqis also held up the judge’s decision as proof of what they’d long believed: U.S. security contractors were above the law.
