Govt yet to unveil valuation method

Hyderabad, January 04: The Secondary Education department introduced the grading system with the issuance of GO 592 on October 23 in order to lessen the burden on the Tenth Class (SSC) students. Following that even as the department has announced orientation classes for teachers and principals, who will be evaluating the answer-sheets, nothing has happened at the ground level with many of them unaware of the new evaluation method.

Andhra JAC appeals for successful bandh

Vijayawada, January 04: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) members of Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam districts have appealed to the people to observe total bandh tomorrow in support of Samaikyandra voluntarily.

Hectic activity in Cong T, U camps

Hyderabad, January 04: The ruling Congress today saw the pro and anti Telangana camps marshalling their respective arguments to persuade the Centre to rule in their favour.

Vijayawada, January 04: Incharge Commissioner of Police and Eluru Range DIG Mahesh M Bhagwat said prohibitory orders under Section 30 are in force in Krishna, East and West Godavari districts and rallies should not be taken out without prior permission.

Speaking to Express here today, he said the proposed bandh tomorrow should be voluntary and the party activists should not force the closure of shops. He said penal action would be taken against those who resort to destructive activities and damage public or private properties.

Six pilgrims, driver die in van mishap

Tirupati, January 04: Six pilgrims from Lucknow died and four others were injured when a Qualis collided with a lorry head-on at C Mallavaram in the early hours of Sunday.

The van driver also died in the mishap. The deceased were identified as Seva Pande (50), his wife Meera (40), Suneel Pande (45), Aravind (10), Ridhi (7), Kushbu Pande (27) and driver Rajesh (35).

Australia condemns Indian youth’s killing

Melbourne, January 04: Australian authorities on Monday “unreservedly” condemned the killing of an Indian youth in Melbourne calling his stabbing a heinous crime even as police claimed there was no evidence to suggest that it was a racial attack.

21-year-old Nitin Garg, an accounting graduate who was originally from Punjab, died after he was stabbed yesterday in West Footscray area. He was the first to die in a slew of attacks on Indians in Australia.

‘Suicides’ by three students shock Mumbai

Mumbai, January 04: Two minors and a medical student are suspected to have committed suicide here, sending shock waves across the city Monday.

A 20-year old medical student, whose identity was not immediately known, was found dead in her flat at Chaitanya Nagar in the upmarket Powai area of north-west Mumbai, police said, adding that prelimanary investigations suggest it could be a suicide even though no note was found at the spot.

Group clash in Chikkadpalli

Hyderabad, January 04: A dispute over a petty issue led to a clash between two groups belonging to different communities at Nagamayakunta in Chikkadpalli tonight.

Following the incident CRPF and RAF troops were deployed in the area to prevent further trouble.

Rosaiah, KCR in Delhi for meeting on Telangana

New Delhi, January 04: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah arrived in the capital Monday, a day ahead of central government’s talks with eight recognised parties from the state on the issue of separate Telangana state.

The chief minister, who met Law Minister M. Veerapa Moily on his arrival, is expected to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh later in the day.

He is also expected to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Defence Minster A.K. Antony to apprise them of the situation in the state and discuss his government’s stand at the talks.

Threat to stall return of 30 lakh Andhras

Hyderabad, January 04: Issuing a stern warning to the anti-Telangana Andhra lobby, the student community of Telangana has said that no person will be allowed to return from his or her native place in Andhra after the Sankaranti festival if Andhra leaders become a stumbling block to statehood to the region.

“The 30 lakh people, who visit their native places in Andhra for Sankranti, will not be allowed to return. The Andhra lobby should not lobby against our genuine agitation and against the aspirations of the people of Telangana,’’ speakers at the Telangana Vidyarthi Garjana said.

3 still missing, 5 dead, after Swiss avalanches

Diemtigen, January 04: Bad weather was hampering rescue workers searching for three people believed trapped under snow after a series of avalanches killed at least five people in Swiss Alps, police said Monday.

Authorities also warned that the avalanche risk is still high after avalanches hit a group of skiers and then the rescuers who came to their aid in the Diemtig Valley, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of the capital Bern, on Sunday.

An emergency doctor who was part of the rescue team was among the four people confirmed killed there.

Two Qaeda militants killed in Yemen clashes – official

Yemen, January 04: Government forces killed two al-Qaeda militants thought to be behind threats to the United States in clashes in Yemen, a security official said on Monday.

One militant was wounded and the fighting was still going on, the official said.

“These elements are believed to be behind the threats directed to the U.S. embassy,” he said.

The United States and Britain kept their embassies in Yemen closed for a second day on Monday over concerns about possible militant attacks after the failed bombing of a U.S.-bound airliner on Christmas Day.

Supreme Court refuses to quash case against Asaram Bapu

New Delhi, January 04: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to quash the attempt to murder case registered against Gujarati spiritual guru Asaram Bapu, who sought a restraint on the state police from arresting him.

A bench of Justices Altamas Kabir and Swatanter Kumar found no merit in the plea of senior counsel Sushil Kumar that the accused had no role in the murderous attempt on one of his erstwhile follower, Raju Chandak.

The senior counsel claimed that Asaram Bapu was present in Delhi delivering a discourse when the incident took place.

Three policemen killed in north Iraq blasts

Kirkuk, January 04: Three policemen were killed and eight people were wounded on Monday by two explosions in Iraq’s northern oil-rich city of Kirkuk, police said.

The first blast occurred in the Wahad Zahar neighbourhood in the south of the ethnically-mixed city, 240 kilometres north of Baghdad, killing a policeman and injuring five other people, police Major Salam Zengana said.

Later a second bomb, apparently targeting an official convoy in the same area, killed two other policemen and injured three other people, Zengana added.

CBI to court: Allow narco-tests on Aarushi’s parents

Ghaziabad, January 04: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Monday sought permission of a local court to conduct narco-tests on Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, parents of 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar who was found murdered in her Noida house on May 16, 2008.

CBI counsel Suresh Batra submitted an application before Judicial Magistrate (CBI) Priti Singh requesting that the CBI be allowed to conduct narco-tests on the Talwars.

He said: “The newly constituted team of CBI has found some fresh clues, therefore, their (Rajesh and Nupur Talwar’s) narco-tests are a must.”

Ahmadinejad begins regional tour in Tajikistan

Tehran, January 04: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has arrived in the Tajik capital on the first leg of a regional tour that will also take him to Turkmenistan.

Ahmadinejad, heading a high-ranking politico-economic delegation, was officially welcomed by his Tajik counterpart Emamali Rakhmon on Monday.

The two presidents plan to hold talks on ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in fields including trade, judiciary, mines and geology, cultural heritage and tourism.

Presidents of Iran and Tajikistan will issue a joint statement.

HbA1c, better test to detect diabetes

London, January 04: Hemoglobin A1c (A1c) is a faster and easier diagnostic test to detect diabetic patients, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) report says.

The A1c test, which measures average blood glucose levels for a period of up to 3 months, was previously only used to evaluate diabetic control over time.

According to the guideline recently released by ADA, HbA1c is a better test to identify undiagnosed individuals already suffering from prediabetes or diabetes.

TENS ineffective in treating back pain

New York, January 04: While transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) had long been the most effective treatment for chronic low back pain, a new study voices doubt over this belief.

Previous studies had reported controversial results regarding the efficacy of TENS in treating different types of pain.

TENS is a portable, pocket-sized, battery-operated device applied to the skin at the area of pain. The electric nerve stimulation is believed to block the pain signal to the brain, providing short-term relief.
